My Scrappy String quilt/wallhanging is finished and hanging on my entryway wall. It's the perfect spot for it I think, and my husband agrees. We love it hanging there to greet people as they enter our home. I quilted it with "organic" lines down the middle of each string. I like the fact that the lines are not perfect. And, I love the black/white polka dot binding. It's perfect! There is not a good way to get a photo of the whole quilt so this view is from the hallway looking toward the front door. The next photo is the view from the stairs as you are walking downstairs. I'm really, really happy with this quilt. It was fun to do and I love how it looks on the wall!! I was going to do a tutorial but I found an even better one than I could have written. It's seems many, many people have used this tutorial and I can see why. It's very good. Here's what I did differently - rather than one narrow white strip down the middle, I did two strips of black/white fabrics. That way, when they were opened, they created a much wider light "middle". I used a 10" foundation block and when finished sewing all the strips onto it, I trimmed it to 9 1/2". I used 1 1/2" strips throughout. It was an easy, easy quilt!! In case you want to see even more string quilts, I've created a little linky party. Please join in if you've got a great string quilt to show us! Take care,
This is a detail of the quilt. The sand was all beaded and the ocean was many layers of sheer with fish on every layer so it looked 3D!

I had a great time this past week at Quilting by the Lake. It was like (a rather intense) quilt camp. What fun! We stayed in dorms, ate our meals in the cafeteria, and used the college class rooms as our own. The camaraderie and Adrenalin surges were just fantastic! Viewing the related quilt show […]

The description card reads, "Crazy Quilt 1883-1893 Silk, cotton, wool, and linen, pieced and embroidered with silk and cotton threads Crazy quilts, which emerged after 1850, were usually composed of small, irregular-shaped fragments of silk, wool, and other fragments pieced together. The seams were then embroidered using a variety of stitches. They acquired the name “crazy quilts” because of the strong colors and busy, confusing nature of their designs, typical of Victorian taste."
Crossing Oceans is a group of international artists from around the world. The theme for this exhibition was "Nature", each of the artists offered a different perspective on the theme. This exhibition was curated by Jane Rollason from the UK. My favourite quilts from this exhibition are below. I have tried to take at least one photo of each of the artists work. I allocated myself half an hour for this exhibition and had to revise my plans, as the quilts were just stunning and deserved much more of my time. By Frieda Anderson (US) : "Jack in the pulpit" series By Irene McWilliams (Ireland) : 5 Flowers By Bergen Rose (US): Peace in nature The fibre art utilises two digital photos, one photo while travelling and the other of one of the artists paintings. The photos were printed from computer onto fabric - cotton (small appliqué) and silk organza (cow landscape). The cotton bottom layer was hand and machine stitched with batting and backing and embellishments. The top overlay is stitched only to the top and is loose, so flutters when there is a breeze. By Dijanne Cevaal (Australia): Olive trees By Jane Rollason (UK): Autumn leaves Vase of flowers By Ineke Berlin (UK): Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn By Kay D Haerland (Australia): Aspects of the glen: looking down I find it hard to believe that this is a quilt, it is so like a photo, it is only when you get up close that you realise it is a quilt! By Christine Kuhr (Germany): Lost garden:Papaver, Dandelion, Fuchsia By Hilary Beattie (UK): Bull rushes By Charlotte Yde (Denmark): Chaos and Order; passage of time By Elaine Quehl (Canada): Encore series By Pat Archibald (UK-Scotland): Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter By Lin Hsin-Chen (Taiwan): French Impressions: backyard garden in Villefranche sur Saone There were many more quilts by these artists, I have tried to take a photo of the work that I found most interesting, but other pieces were just as worthy of looking at and it is simply not possible to take photos of every quilt. I do hope you enjoy seeing all these quilts through my lens. Hopefully, if you were thinking of going to the EPM, but were not sure, these photos will convince you that this is a show very worthy of a visit!
Going to sleep under your average, run-of-the-mill, storebought duvet feels nothing like snuggling under an artistic quilt that you or your loved one made for you. With affection. With care in every stitch. With countless hours of skill and dedication.

I found a nice explanation of what are "wa" quilts in this blog post. Although not a crafty blog, the author shows many beautiful "wa" quilts from the last year Tokyo show - have a look. I will dare to post a quote about "wa" meaning here: "Wa is also a prefix that designates something belongs to native Japanese culture. Washoku is Japanese food, a washitsu is a room with tatami mat flooring and paper-screen doors, wafuku is clothing like kimono or jimbei, and waji are written characters that originated in Japan as opposed to being borrowed from the Chinese language. Wa quilts, therefore, use Japanese-style designs that do indeed maintain balance and harmony in a very non-Western way. The fabric in wa quilts are typically subdued colors, but rarely without a delicate pattern or texture. Patterns and motifs simultaneously achieve balance and movement. " Квилт-победитель шоу я уже показывала, его автор - Etsuko Misaka. Поймала себя на том, что постоянно возвращаюсь к его фотографии. Люблю. Grand prix-First Place quilt I've already shown, but because it is a "wa" quilt, I will show it again. Quilt by Etsuko Misaka. I love it. Домики на квилтах - их никогда не будет много :-) This is my "wa" award :-) I don't think we can have enough of houses on the quilts :-) Официальное первое место в категории "Wa Quilts" - Teiko Saito. First Place in "Wa quilt" category - by Teiko Saito. Second Place in "Wa quilt" category - by Chiemi Ishii. Some other wa quilts on the show. I like this one very much! Shells, all sorts of indigo shades - great! "Houses in hometown" by Teruko Shibata: Необычная цветовая гамма, очень красивый квилт! Unusual colours, beautiful quilt. "Beyond the sea" by Noriko Hasegawa. "Country antique ZAKKA" by Mariko Akahori. "My life" by Keiko Minato. "Mirage" by Shizuko Kuroha. I will post about one of my favorite artists more later. До скорых встреч :-) I have a little bit more, so... see you soon :-)

Enjoy the modern and graphic garden with circular blooms standing tall. This quilt pattern for TOWARDS THE SUN includes a PDF downloadable pattern by Robin Pickens, shown using her Dandi Annie collection for Moda Fabrics, but can be made with your choice of fabrics. (Dandi Annie ships to quilt shops this November). This modern wall quilt uses yardage to create a pieced quilt or applique quilt (applique in pink and gray example is raw edge fusible applique but turn-edge can be done as well). A template is included with the pattern for making the 6" circular pieces (it is a separate file you download along with the pattern). If you'd like to use a plastic template ruler, the actual quilts were made using the Creative Grids Circle Savvy Quilt Ruler (CGRSAV1) which could be purchased separately. The pattern is written for a wall size quilt of 40" x 50". Yardage needed is indicated on the back of pattern. Patterns are for use with your own cotton fabrics. The actual item being sold and downloaded are the PDF patterns for making the quilt, not the actual quilt or fabrics. This pattern is a PDF booklet of 12 pages (10 pages plus front and back cover) plus a separate download for the template that prints out onto an 8 1/2 x 11" piece of paper. Make sure your printer is set to print at 100% or actual size and does not resize the template. Check sizing by measuring the 1" scale on the template. The pattern requires sewing curved half circle and circle shapes but is explained in the pattern. Please note the photos of the quilts are to show what the quilts can look like when made up. The item for sale is the PDF of the pattern, not the quilts. There is no printed pattern that is shipped when purchasing a downloadable PDF. The PDF is for your own personal printing for your own directions to make the quilts and not for mass printing for resale or for group distribution for classes. You may sell the quilts made with this pattern but please credit Robin Pickens as the designer of the quilt pattern. Thank you!
This winter I'm in a bit of a sewing slump. I've decided instead of buying more fabric--I want to use what I have on hand, but use it differently. I don't have lots of solids, but I do have lots of fabric. Research: I've been gathering photo ideas to build Modern Scrappy Quilts this year. I'm looking for random--unexpected color combinations and simple construction. Here are some quilt photos from Pinterest that caught my eye. This first one I like. Its simple, simple construction. Take an oversized square, slice it, add some skinny strips, slice it again, and more skinny strips, and then square it up with a 10.5" sq. or 12.5" sq. acrylic template. No rules, just slicing and sewing. No sashing. 📷 The quilt below is so do-able as far as construction. Random. Improv. Beyond the white-black-gray bits for contrast, I see ORANGE dotted with this and that accent colors. Going shopping out of my own stash is fun. Using up lots of sub assemblies already sewn and ready to modify and use in another quilt. I am aware "stash diving" makes a huge mess in the studio. 📷 📷 Calling all Squares . . . calling all squares . . . come in squares. Above is the perfect solution for using up a half yard of this and that. Anything goes . . . but I'm drawn to the use of green, red, and papersack colors in this one. Works for me. 📷 Certainly I've collected lots of silly themes and strange patterns fabrics like this quilt shown above. What is most interesting? Look at the use of red and white fabrics paired with those weird fabrics. Liberally repeating red and white fabrics pull it all together, making sense of all the other weird fabrics that were added. It could just as well be blue and white fabrics paired with the weird fabrics. What I like most about this scrappy quilt is its simple construction, no sashing, alternating four patch. This light airy quilt is so pretty. I think I'll try this quilt concept right away!
