The 1940s were a tumultuous time. It is impossible to understand those years outside of the context of WWII. The war not only defined the decade but from a design perspective, split it virtually in half. During the first half of the decade, new design was halted, as supply shortages and rationing demanded that all available resources — material and otherwise — be directed towards the war effort…Socially, the decade featured a similar split.

Welcome back to another blog post from our series That 70s House. When I first moved into this house, one of the first things I tackled was the dining nook. Vintage 1936 Berkey & Gay Furniture advertisement Beautiful bedroom suite (The Downing) and dining room suite (The Fairfax) are illustrated here. The wood accents on the buffet and cabinet are particularly intriguing. I love they show the lifestyle sketches as well, women getting ready for a dinner party, and then entertaining guests. The artwork is delightful (the artist might be Miriam Sulerba, but I can't quite make out her last name). ➤ DETAILS: • Original magazine ad (not a reproduction) • Published in October, 1936 • Page measures 9.35 x 12.5" • Excellent condition with crisp, clear illustrations and text (I can't seem to get the text in focus with my camera or phone) • Use black paper to hide print from the other side with dark paper This beautiful furniture ad would make a fun gift for an interior designer or someone who loves 1930s styles. There's lots of inspiration for fashion and decorating both. It would look great as part of a 30's gallery wall. ➤ TIPS: • Keep the ad in the packaging until you’re ready to frame. If you take it with you frame shopping, you’ll be able to find the perfect frame to fit (maybe even with a mat). • If needed, use dark paper or backing board to hide any print from the other side. • Most people frame the mid century covers and advertising art to further set the tone for their decor, remember someone special, or tell a story. You can't beat nostalgia for starting conversations and making people smile. • See more great vintage ads and illustrations in my shop: https://etsy.com/shop/RetroReveries. • Follow Retro Reveries on Pinterest for more inspiration and nostalgia: https://pinterest.com/RetroReveries If you have any questions, I'm glad to help.
