Ok I LOVE summer with my girls. These moments are magical! Today I asked June what she wanted to make and without hesitation in her three year old imagination she quickly responded…”Fish mommy…I want to make fish please” So we google imaged “tropical coral reef” She loved looking at all the fish and talking about all the different colors and designs. She drew some fish and I held her little hand and helped draw some more. She had a list of everything she wanted: blowfish, star fish, catfish, flounder, speckled trout, shark, jelly fish, and SquidWard (my husband is a fisherman and she is obsessed with fish) I cut them out and we counted them and sorted them a few times. Then time to paint!! “Look at the water change colors mommy” I told her to paint yellow on her blue starfish and see what color it made “Wow GREEN!!” We used all different things to paint a variety of lines, dots, and designs; Forks chopsticks Q-tips and Fingers of course! The highlight of my day was when my almost three yr old turned to me and said, “This makes me happy, mommy” She finally added some buttons and sequins with Elmer’s glue I used my hot glue gun to glue the pieces together. June picked out some shells for the bottom and we were thrilled with the finished coral reef!!

Canadian painter Peter Ferguson’s meticulously painted, darkly humorous narratives evoke early 20th century small town Americana (or Canadiana as the case may be). Combining the fantasy of the great ages of exploration with a distinctly paranormal bent, Ferguson’s work hovers along the lines of fantasy without ever fully teetering into full scale camp, and his work retains an air of both wonder and occasional melancholy.

Like the Value Landscapes posted earlier this month, this lesson was inspired by Miriam at Arteascuola. However, these were "painted" with pixels on the computer rather than regular paintbrushes. Each year 4 student completed their own landscape in less than 10 minutes but still had valuable experience with using tone to create depth within a two dimensional artwork. After we observed and discussed the scenes created by Miriam's students the children took turns at making their own value landscape on the two available classroom computers while the rest of the class continued on with their set work. It was quick and easy but also meaningful for the children.

I’m not sure if these can technically be called kaleidoscopes….BUT this tutorial encourages making simple open-ended DIY kaleidoscopes that your kids can use to look at a variety of objects and materials. It also includes some easy suggestions for "ends" including Perler bead discs and colorful paper.
Remember two years ago? When the Summer Olympics were in London and all we could talk about was Ryan Lochte’s grill, Ursain Bolt’s very fitting name, and Gabrielle Douglas just impressing the crap out of us. Well get ready for a whole new round of inspiration of the snowier and colder variety. This year, you better believe we’ll be screaming, “USA! USA!” louder than ever. The 2014 Sochi Olympics is seeing the largest tribe of US athletes in history (230 superstars to be exact). And while favorites like Shaun White, Lolo Jones, and Patrick Kane will be showing up, we’re ready to throw one massive party for soon-to-be house hold names like ski jumping maniac Sarah Hendrickson, brother and sister hockey dream team Phil and Amanda Kessel, and the youngest ever member of the US men’s luge team, Tucker West. While they perform their hearts, we’ll be toasting them with food, drinks, and medal-worthy merrymaking. Enough talk. Let the party-planning games begin.
