Via Freeform crochet has always been immensely attractive for me. It shows the amazing creative genius of the artist and the skills to turn those varied shapes and forms into tangible, awe-striking masterful constructions. Once in a while, I like to delve into freeform crochet, but this summer, the desire to fully engage into it is hugely pronounced. I have already made several freeform necklaces, but I decided to bead them all and the beading is going slow. So, I have nothing to show you right now, but I am hopeful to have them ready by the end of the week. How about you? Have you tried freeform crochet? What have you made? Via Via Via

in progress.... The Antique Pattern Library has a huge catalog of antique, out-of-print patterns for every type of needlework. These patterns are FREE! Here we will be building a visual index for the Irish Crochet patterns. The motifs, grounds, and other patterns will be categorized by type, and will show a small photo (from the APL) and the name of the item, and the pdf that you can find it in. Our photos won't be to scale. APL lists all of their pdfs alphabetically by book and author. We won't link the pdfs directly as sometimes they are finicky to open from links. Just go to the APL (linked above) and head to the book you need. This helpful person has compiled a visual index as well, but it is by book instead. Flowers, Wheels Edgings Grounds and Fillings
Chantilly Lace I love lace, so I was happy to hear from the Wall Street Journal that lace has made a comeback on the runway for spring and fall. The Journal shows how lace is still made today after decades of its virtual disappearance from the fashion world. I hope a revival of this ancient art can be sustained. As the Journal slideshow indicates, lace can be transformed for edginess. But to me there's nothing more feminine than lace. I wonder if its return signals a subterranean longing in women for clothes that are more feminine and less oriented toward the office. From Jennifer at starchedandcrumpled.com: "Dating to around 1910, this is an unfinished Irish crochet lace collar, still stitched to the blue fabric and paper with hand drawn pencil guidelines. The large motifs have been completed, and the joining lace tracery has just been begun. The inner collar measurement is approximately 44cm, and the outer edge is 88cm. It is 10cm deep." Here is a full view of the collar. As Jennifer noted above, the motifs are stitched to a fabric collar shape, and then basted to a paper backing. Do you think that the fabric shape was a "pattern piece"? One that they saved and re-used for other collars? Note how she laid out the motifs in a symmetrical pattern, with the pomegranates thistles at both ends, then working inwards, the daisies, the swirling shamrock, the next swirling flower (what is that?) and centered with the elaborate, three dimensional Irish rose. Two types of wheels would frame the face. Here is a great view of joining in progress! Can you tell if she started on the outer cord, and worked her way towards the motif, or the opposite? You can see that the motif is right-side-up. We had questions about motif placement after watching the Russian style of Irish Crochet. Do you join your work with the motifs face down or face up? The Russians usually do it face down. Maire Treanor does it face up, as she wants the Clones Knots to be on top of the work. This person worked face up as well. I wonder why this was never finished? You can see the pencil tracing on the paper here on the outer edge of the collar, where the maker was going to put the edging. See the little triple arcs along the upper left and lower left edges? You also get a great view of the cord that was basted to the paper, outlining the collar and giving her something to anchor the joining ground to. -posted by Kim UPDATE! From Eileen: "I have observed that most of the motifs are contained in Vol 1 of the Hardouin series-all except the small wheel and flower. Le Chardon-Thistle-no.20 Les trois Spirales no 13 La Marguerite no 18 L’Helice no 1(The Propellor) Forgot to check on the rose but was common to have 10 or more petals with more than 3 layers of petals. It is interesting to note the use of cord to form the outline of the collar. I know that the lace made at Oriveto (Italy) uses the outline method from the needlepoint laces and the maker crochets over it to form the motifs. In the background of the photos the invoice has a French Address. It seems to me the maker of this was drawing upon techniques she was familiar with. The direction of the small area of ground worked in the double picoted loop begins on the short edge and is worked towards the centre. Not a direction I would have chosen for me it would have been more pleasing to the eye to begin at the base line and proceed towards the neckline, (like the centre outwards of a circle-have said this one lots before.) No hard and fast rules have been written for these things in the end they are personal choice."

Today we are going to be talking about two more Irish beauties, Irish linen & lace :) They are often combined, but not always. I have been buying Irish linens for almost 30 years now. It started at an antique auction where I won and entire case of Irish linens for $20. I've been hooked ever since :) Here are spools of Irish lace in a bowl, think of all the towels, sheets, and dresses you could trim with these, the mind reels :) This dress is an exquisite example of Irish linen and lace at it's finest. It's a vintage piece from the Edwardian era. Here is a beautiful example of hand embroidered Irish Linen. A piece this ornate was probably a wedding gift or made for a wedding dowry. Irish linen and lace drying on the line, how divine. If you have an unwanted stain on vintage linens the recommended way to remove them is to rub a little lemon juice on the stain and lay (or hang) them in the sun, this is gentler on the linen than bleach. An Irish Linen loom from 1820 This is an Irish boys Christening outfit. This is almost exactly like my sons except his knickers were white velvet since he was baptized the day after Christmas, I wish I had more pictures of him in it, he was so adorable. With a name like Charles Patrick, he's all Irish :) I adore lace trimmed sheets. They're a beautiful luxury that every one should experience at least once. Consider shopping around for lace and add your own, it can save you a LOT of money. I've been doing this for years :) If you like the look of these sheet you can purchase them from Victorian Trading Co. They specialize in all things vintage (or that look vintage) http://www.victoriantradingco.com/store/catalogimages/19t/i119.html They also carry this lovely lace table topper for a touch of old world romance :) http://www.victoriantradingco.com/store/catalogimages/1a/i12521.html And last, but not least they offer these beautiful towels http://www.victoriantradingco.com/store/catalogimages/8h/i555.html So Top O' The Mornin to ya and don't forget to let a little linen and lace weave some charm into your home and your life. It has a way of making you feel like a true lady (or gentleman). It will also make your guests feel warm, welcome, and very special.
