Shinkage-ryū (新陰流) 2 scrolls- both Mokuroku (however the second seems to have a section to deal with divination) (digital copy) Shinkage-ryū (新陰流), which translates to "new shadow school," is a venerable Japanese martial arts school (koryu) established by Kamiizumi Ise-no-Kami Fujiwara-no-Hidetsuna, later known as Kamiizumi Ise-no-Kami Nobutsuna[1] (上泉 伊勢守 信綱, 1508–1578), during the mid-sixteenth century. Primarily focused on swordsmanship (kenjutsu and iaijutsu), Shinkage-ryū represents a harmonious amalgamation of Nobutsuna's learnings from the Kage-ryū school (Aizu). During the pre-16th century era in Japan, martial techniques were primarily developed for practical combat efficacy. In the time of Shinkage-ryū's founder, Kamiizumi Hidetsuna, the measure of a school's excellence lay in duels. Fundamental stances were characterized by a distinct, low posture, offering comprehensive bodily protection. The pursuit of victory at any cost formed a fundamental tenet deeply ingrained in the teachings of the existing schools during this period. Essential philosophical and strategic principles encompassed the concept of the "sword that kills only once" (一殺の太刀, issatsu no tachi) and the "sword of only one cut" (一の太刀, ichi no tachi).
