The Frauenkirche Church in Dresden is an evangelic-Lutheran (protestant) built between 1726 and 1743 in Baroque style. It was designed by the Dresden architect Georg Bähr (1666-1738). According to Lutheran liturgy, altar and pulpit have to be visible for all at all times. For that reason Bähr did not opt for an oblong shape but rather for a centralized building. He gave the church a circular shape, the visitors sat on balconies on various levels. The dome was visible from all parts of the city. In the 2nd World War the church was destroyed in an air raid in the night betwen February 13 and 14. During this attack by the allied forces a large part of Dresden was destroyed with fire bombs, and over 35.000 civilians died. The city hosted many refugees at the time. In the DDR era the ruined church was left as it was as a reminder of the horrors of warfare. After the demise of Communism, in 1994 the reconstruction was started. Thanks to support from citizens, cities and countries the church could reopen its doors on October 30, 2005. It is estimated that the reconstruction cost 130 millions of euros. Symbol of reconciliation "Let this church, that had been a symbol of the destruction of the city for so many years, now become a symbol of reconciliation between the UK and Germany", thus wrote the British ambassador in Germany, Peter Torry, in the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper. 59 Years after the allied bombing, a gold cross was made by the son of one of the pilots of the air raid. On june 23, 2004, this cross was placed on top of the church, along with the Dome.
