About Rare dining table model 1020 designed by Josef Frank. Produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden.
Beautiful, rare floor lamp by Josef Frank, made from black lacquered metal and brass. Distinctly sculpted base, pleated satin shade with loose brass top. Josef Frank was an Austrian-born architect and designer known for his contributions to the Swedish interior firm Svenskt Tenn. His furniture, fabrics, and lighting are both elegant and whimsical. Frank worked as an architect while in Austria and designed furniture and accessories for the firm Haus und Garten. Frank helped to define modern Viennese design through his design principles, and by collaborating with other Austrian architects. This collaboration culminated in the “Neues Weiner Wolmen”, or “New Viennese Living” group. The group started in the 1920s and rejected regimented ways of arranging interiors. For example, they believed that a home should be comprised of many different objects, rather than furniture suites; items should look unique but remain adaptable. Josef Frank decided to leave Austria in 1933, following the rise of Nazism. His wife, Anna, was Swedish. Estrid Ericsson first ordered furniture designed by Josef Frank in 1932, so it was natural that Frank took a job with Svenskt Tenn in 1934. Although Frank and Ericsson’s collaboration was successful, Frank was still committed to architecture; he moved to New York in 1938 to pursue public housing projects. This endeavor was not fruitful, but he worked as a professor at the New School and stayed in New York until 1946. He began designing for Svenskt Tenn again the same year and remained with them until his retirement. Svenskt Tenn had produced subdued, functionalist pieces before Ericsson hired Frank. They sold both furniture and objects, but most of their pieces were made of pewter, or pewter paired with darkly stained wood. Frank brought color and light to Svenskt Tenn. His work referenced traditional European furniture, but with a bolder edge. He continued to design based on the principles he established with New Viennese Living but came to coin his design approach “Accidentalism”. In a 1956 essay for the Swedish magazine Form, he wrote “we should design our surroundings as if they originated by chance.”. He rejected modernism’s uniformity and proposed a future in which people do not decorate based on a set of rules, but instead choose diverse objects and arrange them functionally. Josef Frank’s textiles, furniture, and lighting illustrate Frank’s ingenuity and push-back against straight-laced modernism. This elegant rosewood cabinet was designed by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn in the late 1930's. In the Svensk Tenn archive's furniture book, Estrid Ericson (the founder of Svenskt Tenn) has made a pencil sketch of the cabinet and written "designed for the King", Gustaf V, likely for his 80th birthday in 1938. So this particular model 792 also became known as the Gustav V model. The rare cabinet on offer here was produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden in the early 1950s. The model was usually produced in pyramid mahogany, only a few pieces were made in rosewood. The cabinet has double doors, veneered in mirorred rosewood, with a solid oak interior with a total of 10 pull-out drawers. Brass key and round brass door hinges. The cabinet is in a very good, restored condition.

Amidst all the worry about what is happening in the world - I had a long booked trip to fly to Stockholm to see my closest school friends from over 30 years ago. In high school I attended the International School of Brussels which at the time was full of Scandinavians kids - and thus I made the most wonderful Scandi friends - and although our lives have taken completely different trajectories (California, Norway, Sweden, Germany), we try to meet up once a year which recently had been scuppered by Covid. I'm not going to delve into the wonderfulness of seeing childhood friends who both inspire you and make you laugh. What I'll give you an insight into, is the magic that is Svenskt Tenn www.svenskttenn.com on Strandvågan 5 in Stockholm and its main textile pattern source - the wonderful designs by Josef Frank (1885-1967). Master Drawing and Textile: Dixieland Svenskt Tenn is a labyrinth of a boutique brimming with playful colour and lush interior chic that is abundant with the trademark textiles of Josef Frank. Frank was an Austrian born successful architect and designer who started delving into the world of designing patterns that amongst others, caught the eye of Estrid Ericson in Stockholm, who had opened the design and furnishings firm Svenskt Tenn. Astrid Ericson and Josef Frank With mounting anti semitism in Vienna in the 1930’s, Frank emigrated to Stockholm where he solidified what was to become a life long working collaboration with Ericson and Svenskt Tenn. Frank would produce a plethora of designs for printed fabrics and furniture that were a result of his deep rooted interests and life changing experiences but also in reaction to Ericson’s forward thinking and timeless vision. Frank produced approximately 170 fabric patterns, 40 of which have become iconic classics in the world of interiors and to this day, his designs also remain the center attraction of the chic Svenskt Tenn shop allure. Textile: Under Ekvatorn It's incredible how someone who lived through two World Wars, two exiles because of persecution (he relocated to the US for 10 years at the start of WWII), was able to produce such vibrant, buoyant, and uplifting collections that were to become the epitome of interior chic certainly in Sweden - but for those who know, also in the rest of Europe and United States. Now, after almost three generations, his designs still carry a timeless contemporary organic freshness coveted by young and old alike. You walk into Svenskt Tenn which flanks the river Söderström and you are literally swept away by the vibrancy of bold colour, the use of fauna and seemingly contemporary eclectic quirk that fuses perfectly to create an inspiring and inviting interior. I HIGHLY recommend a visit. Textile and Master Drawing: Vegetable Tree Textile: California
