Thanks to Haley Wilson for sharing her photos and ideas! Haley teaches one of the preschool classes with Glenda Wilson. And Glenda creates most of the ideas that Haley uses. Haley says we need this or that and Glenda creates it! Thanks to both for permitting me to share! Thanks to Jeanne Dickson for sharing her Bible class songs! I have created a flipchart for The Battle of Jericho song that is shown below. That is a lot of boxes! If you know someone that works at FedEx or UPS, ask if they can get them for you! The boxes were placed on a plastic tablecloth and was pulled to knock down Jericho at the right time. The teacher pulled the tablecloth from the opposite side the students were so they didn't see it. Don't tape the boxes so they can be folded and saved to reuse. This is so much hands-on fun for kids! **These boxes can be used for The Tower of Babel and Nehemiah's Wall** They blow the horn and march around Jericho. And the walls came tumbling down! Haley made the horns with brown construction paper wrapped around horns The plastic horns can be purchased here (smaller packs are available in stores). Here's an idea I haven't seen before! (Photo and ideas used with permission) Jeanne Dickson covered Pringles cans and built Jericho with them! These are a great visual and would be so much fun to knock down. They can be used for other Bible cities also. Just use a box or Jeanne suggests that Bluebell single serving ice cream cups would be perfect to use (they have a plastic lid). The download includes 9 choices of brick and stone backgrounds that can be printed and glued to a Pringles can. They can also be printed and cut down to cover your square building for Rahab. Click here for the backgrounds. Here are some songs by Jeanne: This color flipchart has a new song by Jeanne Dickson for The Battle of Jericho. There is a one page black & white printable if you prefer to not use the flipchart. Click here to download. Here is another song by Jeanne Dickson! This includes a one-page black & white printable of the song and a color flipchart of the song. Click here to download. Preschool included: Joshua Leads the Israelites in Numbers 27:18-23 & Joshua 3-4 The Walls of Jericho in Joshua 2 & 6 Other lessons and Newsletter Foldables included: Rahab and the Two Spies in Numbers 27:18-23 & Joshua 2 Crossing the Jordan River in Joshua 3-4 The Walls of Jericho in Joshua 6 The Gibeonites Deceive Joshua in Joshua 9 The Newsletter Foldable can be used as a review handout, sent in the mail or in an email, especially for those unable to be in class. The same lesson is included for the teacher. Click here to download. Click here to see the lesson & printables for the Battle of Jericho.
I am truly enjoying Wednesdays Around the World. I love seeing others link up with what they have been learning. This week, I will be highlighting what others have been learning in history. You see, just when I think we are in the groove with school, something happens. My children and I ended up sick! I ended up taking a child to the doctor yesterday because he just was not improving. He is now on an antibiotic and breathing treatments, as needed. It is a nasty Upper Respiratory infection. We are finally on the mend and will begin a full day of school tomorrow. Now on to sharing what others have been learning in their history lessons. Lindsay, from Bytes of Memories and her son studied about Joshua, The Battle of Jericho and Rahab. I loved how creative Lindsay got with this activity. To help explain the lesson, Lindsay and her son built a city of blocks and used little playmobil men. Joshua and the Battle of Jericho from Lindsay at www.bytesofmemory.com. Just head on over and visit Lindsay, her son to see how they learned about The Battle of Jericho! I know I will be re-doing this lesson with my kids just so we can do her activity! Ticia and her kids from Adventures in Mommydom learned about what it was like in the Trenches of World War I. I love how Ticia takes the time to share with her kids that war is not as glamorous as what we are lead to believe. I love the imagination used, by using pillows and cushions to build the trenches and then using rolled or balled up socks as mortars. Ticia and her kids building trenches. http://adventuresinmommydom.org Be sure to visit Ticia at Adventures in Mommydom to read the full lesson! I am looking forward to diving back into our history to see what new lessons we can learn. I would love to have you share with us what you have been learning as well. Just link up below! ****disclaimer~ This link-up is not officially affiliated with Bright Ideas Press but is my own project. I am a customer and fan.

In second grade our students learn about birds. Each student is assigned a particular bird to research and create a board game. I was looking on Pinterest one day and found these really cute clay birds. Here is the link to the Etsy site: http://www.etsy.com/listing/120121796/sale-clay-bird-sculpture-turquoise. As soon as I saw it I knew I wanted to make them with my students. While making the clay birds we really practiced modeling the clay with our hands. We talked about how we could push, pinch and pull the clay to form the bird shape. I found a great graphic that I used to show my students one way to create the bird. Here is the site where I got this picture. I think it really helped the kids visualize the process:http://lh4.ggpht.com/_uRolMrRneWc/TRsrMoYa77I/AAAAAAAAEDA/R91VBrZsMWw/s1600-h/genine4.jpg I also found these great clay bird nests on Pinterest, here is the link: http://redandthepeanut.blogspot.com/2012/04/how-to-make-ceramic-pottery-birds-nest.html and decided to make those to put our birds in. If you are a bird lover you should really check out her blog. There are so many beautiful photos. Each student got a small slab circle of clay, turned the edges up and added clay strings made from garlic presses. It was great practice attaching clay. The kids really loved making both the birds and the nests. We practiced lots of handbuilding skills. Here are some of our finished birds. Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with your kids this year on Monday, January 21, 2014. It is a time to for our nation to remember the injustices that Dr, King fought. "The national holiday honoring Dr. King is an occasion for joy and celebration for his life and his work toward nonviolent social change in America and the world. Traditionally, we celebrate holidays with parties, family picnics, fireworks, a trip back home or to the seashore. However, we must also be mindful that this is a special holiday - one which symbolizes our nation's commitment to peace through justice; to universal brother- and sisterhood; and to the noblest ideal of all: a democratic society based on the principles of freedom, justice and equality for all people. Whether you celebrate Dr. King's birthday on January 15th or during Black History Month, the holiday is an occasion for thanksgiving, unselfishness, and rededicating ourselves to the causes for which he stood and for which he died." - See more at: http://www.mlkonline.net/holiday.html#sthash.Cbpb7fQL.dpuf "The national holiday honoring Dr. King is an occasion for joy and celebration for his life and his work toward nonviolent social change in America and the world. This bingo game was designed to help students learn many different coping strategies that they can use if they are stressed, angry, frustrated, or upset. It works best after students have already been introduced to the idea of what coping skills are. Two versions are included - one for younger students and one for older students. This pack contains blank bingo cards (both versions), 12 premade cards (younger version) and caller picture cards (both versions). Directions: 1) After making the cards, if applicable, the caller randomly draws from their stack of bingo card pictures and reads the coping strategy to the class. 2) If the student has the called picture on their card, they mark it with a token or other marker. 3) When a student gets 5 pictures in a row (or 3 for the younger version) horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, they yell “bingo.” They then recite the strategies and do one of the following (optional) to collect their prize: - Choose 1 to demonstrate - Tell about a time when they used one of the coping strategies - Tell about a time when they saw someone use one of the coping strategies ***************************************************************************** Want even more anger-related activities at a discount?
