The basic parabolic or "catanary" arch kiln with an internal fire box. This design provides fast fire features with the ash deposite of a fire box within the ware chamber. A "cat" kiln made from entirely recycled materials at The University of North Texas circa 2001. The Cat kiln at USU in Logan, UT. Photo taken in 2011. The "cat kiln" at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, MT. Two "cat" designs using a single stack, one straight wood and the other wood/soda. Flagstaff, AZ. ________________________________________________________________________________ This kiln design uses the basic cross draft idea, but employs a barrel arch (1/2 circle) for construction of the ware chamber. An elevated platform is constructed from concrete block and a drop down fire box is built at the front. After bulding the verticle walls, the arch form is placed and the arch is bricked. This kiln uses a second layer of brick in the arch and has an extended "interlocking" face that allows the exterior wall to be contained by the outer arch. This design feature uses more bricks, but allows for a tighter seal at the wall to arch connection point. A photo showing the second layer of brick in the arch. In the woodland men laboured mightily! and round the corner in a clearing we found the potter and the beadmakers. There was a very friendly looking green man a wonderful beehive kiln, I thought the roof had a touch of Gaudi about it. A pretty picture. and a cloth which I am sure I could have found a use for.
Little village in the shape of five attached little ceramic houses made using the Raku process. The Raku makes them unique as I am never sure exactly how they are going to come out. I biscuit fire my work first in an electric kiln, then glaze the walls with a transparent raku glaze and the roofs with a glaze containing some cobalt oxide which gives it a hint of lavender blue. I then fire the piece in the raku kiln till about 1000C, before opening the kiln, the village is then put in a steel box with saw dust, I make sure that it lays on its back in the saw dust to have the crackles on the front. . Since the box is fairly air tight, the combustion of the saw dust draws oxygen from the clay and produces the black colour in the cracks in the glaze, and in any unglazed parts, which is characteristic of Raku. The Raku firing makes each piece unique and I am never sure exactly how they are going to come out.The light blue roof glaze is made with cobalt which gives it a hint of lavender blue. The village can also be used as a cone insence burner, multiple little windows let the air in for the cone to combust and the smoke goes through the chimney, not that it is a tightknit community living in this village with a single heating system for the full 5 houses! The middle house is about 15.5 cm high link to my esty shop: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/CeramicsNHamill?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=811222584 link to other little insence burner houses https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/603482256/raku-ceramic-house-cone-incense-burners?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=nathalie+hamill&ref=sr_gallery-1-16&organic_search_click=1

My Tiny Raku Buildings are all hand made 1 at a time. They are a solid form, shaped and formed from a special clay mix that allows them to be fired using the Raku method of firing. Raku is the heating of pottery to high temperatures and then cooling it quickly. It is Raku's unpredictable results and my love for small architectural forms that attracts me to make these. These houses might be found in any small town around my rural Missouri home and are my inspiration for these two. Approximate size of Houses: 1.25 "W x 1.25"D x 2.25"T The bottom of the the buildings are unfinished and left black from the smoke and fire from the reduction process during firing. The last photos show my propane kiln at temperature (1800F) with buildings inside. They are taken out glowing red hot and placed in reduction to cool. This is where they achieve the awesome colors you see. Each building is crafted individually without the use of any molds.
