A knitted lapwing, quite a rare sight on Worthing beach - or any beach, for that matter. This little chap will be appearing with all my other knitted birds in the Creative Waves Flock to Worthing art trail this summer, and then... well, I can't tell you more details at the moment, but something very exciting is going to happen later in the year. So get your binoculars out and watch this space...

Husbandface asked me to knit him a sharktopus. Therefore, I am knitting him a sharktopus. SHARKTOPUS! :D :D :D I’m making his tentacles based on the Hansi Singh’s Octopus pattern, since I’ve knit these tentacles several times before while making tiny octopuses, and they’ve worked out well. When making the tentacles on very small needles with sock yarn, it’s best to pull the yarn nice and tight when you sew them up. That causes them to curl just like tentacles! Pipe cleaners are not needed. The tentacles are not poseable, but they are curly. The head/fin section is entirely improvised. Yarns used are sock yarn leftovers in white and sparkly blue for the main body, and some leftover dark red for the inside of the mouth. Basically, the head portion is two short-row heels. Kinda. After joining the tentacles as per Hansi’s Octopus pattern, I worked probably around nine or so rounds plain knit. I think I may have put a couple of symmetrical increases in before dividing for the mouth. (I used the lifted increase technique for all increases to make them as invisible as possible, but whichever way suits you best.) Then divide for the mouth; but divide unevenly, with more stitches for the top jaw than the bottom. The top and bottom jaw were knit as if I were knitting a short row heel; w&t at the end of every row and slip the first stitch of every row. I added a few symmetrical increases (maybe six or so) in the top portion of the head to make it curved, as I was working the short rows. Then increased one in the centre quite near the end of the nose to have an odd number so I could do central decreases, and kept doing my short-row heel thing until I had I think three stitches left. I made two central decreases before the end of the nose to make it curve down a tad - ssk, then pass one more stitch from the left needle over the ssk to decrease symmetrically three stitches into one. Then switched to the dark red and worked the other side of the ‘heel’ flat, without increases or decreases. (This is all rough notes as best as I can remember, since I didn’t write any of it down and knit it all while half asleep…!) When reaching the wraps, rather than knit them together with the stitch, I picked them up like they were a stitch for the first two rows of red, then upon reaching them again, k2tog the picked up wrap and the next stitch, followed by picking up the next wrap, turn, etc. It’s based loosely on the short row heel for the Knitty socks Ziggy, so if I’m not making much sense go look at her pattern! ;) The only difference being, I decreased down to three on the top jaw and two on the bottom for my ‘heels’… plus I w&t the very first and very last stitches too, rather than starting one stitch in. So just before Kitchener’ing the mouth together, the first and last stitches on each needle were blue wraps. And the bottom half of the jaw is just a shorter, thinner short-row heel with fewer increases and no central decreases, switching to red for the inside. I grafted together the top and bottom half of the inside of the mouth with Kitchener stitch, which involved a bit of messing about since there were more stitches on the top needle than the bottom. :P Then added three fins: cast on 4 using Judy’s Magic Cast on, then k one round even. Then k1, m1, k1 twice, then k1, m1, k2 for one half, k2, m1, k1, then k1, m1, k3 / k3, m1, k1, &tc, keeping the increases at one side of the triangle which makes the fin curve nicely. For the large fin on top, I increased til I had nine on each needle then Kitchener’d the needles together and sewed it on the shark body. For the side fins I increased til I had seven on each and did the same. Then added some white teeth (just sewed them on loosely) and a couple of black beads for eyes, and voila! Itty bitty sharktopus. Well, sharktopi, I guess. I made two. One for husbandface, one for one of his coworkers. I am unreasonably proud of him. Them. :3 Sorry if these notes are a bit obscure or in any way unclear. If you do want to knit him and have any questions about the shark portion, please do message me and ask, I’ll attempt to be a bit more clear! ;)

[pictured above: lantern moon tape measure that's in sheep-shape! i have one of these and i love it!] So I popped in the store on Sunday, right around closing time, to imagine a list I might make of holiday gifts I'd love to receive. I checked in with Kathy, Kennedy, and Emily, too. Then I made a mad dash through the rooms, snapping pictures of all sorts of goodies, from stocking stuffers to a very fancy bag (available in red or green) that would excite most knitters more than, say, receiving a diamond ring. (Let's face it, you can't keep your stash in a diamond ring-- they're terribly impractical.) Here are some ideas for you to give and receive, along with a few bonus pictures-- of my son showing off his new Alpaca fingerless gloves that I made for his birthday, and of a couple of items I found online. Now remember, it's always better to shop local and we all know HCW has the best supply of everything for knitters. But once in awhile I find something out there that I order online, just to round out my collection. [kennedy says you need one of these bags in red and also green (see below)] [glass buttons are an exquisite gift. i could just put these on my coffee table and look at them they're so pretty.] [kathy wants a stocking full of super chunky from knit collage. can you blame her?] [glass needles anybody? these are so darn pretty.] [more glass-- do you see a theme here. there are all sorts of beautiful shawl pins made in many mediums.] [a great stocking stuffer-- why settle for plastic cable needles when you can have these tactilely fabulous bamboo ones?] [more stocking stuffers-- fancy stitch markers, already wrapped!] [when i checked on sunday this was the very last yarn bowl in stock and we won't have more until january. would somebody please buy this for me?] [my son wearing his alpaca fingerless gloves. i learned how to make these in one of deb's classes. gift certificates for classes are also an excellent present.] [if you want to round out your knit-gifts this year with some t-shirts or posters that proclaim your passion, you can get t-shirts, mugs, etc. online at CafePress or how about a Keep Calm and Knit On poster from this etsy shop.]

Flowers are a great project for using little scraps of yarn. There are a number of flower patterns available online. I thank Nezumi World for the ingenious idea of starting the petals on the outside end, and knitting the middle last. http://nezumiworld.blogspot.com/2009/06/world-wide-knitting-in-public-day.html I make a similar five petal flower but start it with a puffy center. Nita's Flower Any yarn and any size needle will work. I used worsted weight wool and size 9 needles. CO 3 Kfb in each stitch (6 st) K garter stitch for 4 rows. K2 tog across. Don't BO. Cut long tail. Thread yarn. Run yarn through stitches and along all edges. Tighten into a ball. (This is similar to what you do at the top of a stocking hat.) Knot yarn, weave in ends and cut. (If you aren't going to felt the flower, you can leave the ends for ties.) PETAL: Holding button-like center right side up, pick up 3 st along the edge. PKP in each st. (9 st) K across Next row, and all wrong side rows until the last: Purl On each K row, k2 tog each end until you have 3 st. S1 P2 tog, PSSO, cut yarn and pull through. Weave the end into the back side. Pick up three more stitches along the edge of your puffy center, and repeat 4 times. As you weave in the yarn ends at the base of the petals, sew the bottoms of the petals together so that they overlap slightly. I felted mine, so it came out like this: Then appliqued it to a purse:
Stunning images that occupy the lacuna between art and science.
Pattern notes: This pattern will make a pair of average man-sized mittens. If you want smaller mittens, either use smaller needles, thinner yarn, or try casting on less stitches for the cuff and adjusting the rest of the numbers accordingly. If there is demand for it, I will work out other sizes but I haven't done that yet. The pattern has been sort of test knit (as in I wrote it out as I was knitting the first mitten and followed the pattern and adjusted it as I was knitting the second mitten), but there may still be errors as this is my first original pattern and I'm making it up as I go along. Please let me know if you find any errors or have any questions! You will need: 200 m/100 g worsted weight yarn. I used Manos del Uruguay Maxima in colour M2415 and I used ~165 m for these mittens. A set of 3.25 mm dpns A set of 4 mm dpns stitch marker Waste yarn or stitch holders Tapestry needle Cuff: CO 40 stitches with smaller needles. There are many ways to keep yourself busy during the quarantine. One of the best ones is to start making crafts. Not only can making things by hand ease your anxiety and lower stress levels, but you can also create some cool stuff to make your surroundings look much cozier and prettier.
