Having started a pair of socks from odd mini balls of sock wool got me to thinking about all the other mini balls of left over yarn I have...100's! nothing over 10g in this little lot.....but after making a magic ball or two from some of my left over yarns I like 5g balls best...more colour changes creative crochet and knits all very original never to be repeated or seen any where as we all have different left overs to make magic balls with. A project to use the 15 Minute Rule Tie all the ends together in one big ball of useable yarn and make yourself a fabulous and original blanket....or make something at least. I made 100g balls to start with but think 50g are better 50g Magic balls of left over yarns All you need to know about magic yarn balls and what to make on this post... I love the randomness and individuality of the magic ball projects Want to use up all those little left over balls of yarn? Click on each of the links below to give you all you need to know: How to make the Magic Yarn Ball and then some suggested and awesome hats, scarves, blankets or socks... Magic Yarn Balls from Tiny Purrs Blog Magic Ball Knitting Fabulous blog post from Chasing Centuras Magic Ball Crochet and Knitting PINTEREST The earliest Blog post about Magic Yarn Balls and blanket making, I could find.... is this one from LINDA A Blog Crazy Crocheting Fool in 2008, if you know of any blog post before this one let me know MY MAGIC BALL TRIANGLE BLANKET PROJECT..... What to make with them is the tricky part, making the balls was very relaxing I started with a triangle, but hated it the 10g balls were too big, needed more colour changes so re-think!!! Tried mixing two of the magic balls together, happier with the outcome colour wise but chunky weight so not good for wearables really, great for a rug or cushion though maybe a Rhombus bag? UPDATE: it turned into a bigger project still to be joined together but very happy with all the left overs as a fab throw like this PATTERN FOR LONG ISOSCOELES TRIANGLES US Terms 5mm hook Just dk 4mm hook With your magic ball and sock wool to give the shading, work as one yarn. ROW 1: sl st, on hook ch3, dc, into fist ch sts, turn. [2dc] ROW 2: ch2, counts as first dc, in all rows, dc into same st, dc in last st, turn. [3dc] NOTE: it can be asier to do the last st into the sp rather than the st. ROW 3: ch2, dc into same st, dc into next st, dc into last sp, turn, [4dc] ROW 4: ch2, dc into same st, dc into next 2sts, dc into last sp, turn. [5dc] ROW 4- 39: repeat row 4 with the increase of 1st, each row. [40dc] RIGHT ANGLE TRIANGLE FOR THE SIDES Increase is only one side so the rows run 2,3,3,4,4 5,5...and so on. MARK THE INCREASE SIDE so that you don't forget. After a few rows it will be obvious which is the straight side and which is the angled, increase side. Right angle triangles just need a little more attention Strictly speaking it should run 2,2, 3,3,4,4... but i didn't like the first 2 sets of 2 so increased so it runs 2,3,3,4,4....and so on. ROW 1: sl st, on hook ch3, dc, into fist ch sts, turn. [2dc] ROW 2: INCREASE ROW. ch2, counts as first dc in all rows, dc, dc in same st, dc in last st, OR sp, which ever is easiest for you, turn. [3dc] ROW 3: ch2,[do not dc in same st, as you did with the Isosceles, this will be the straight side], dc, into next st, or sp, turn, [3dc] ROW 4: INCREASE ROW. ch2, dc in same st, dc into next st, dc into last st or sp, turn. [4dc] ROW 5: ch2, do not dc in same st, dc in next 2st, dc in last st, or sp, turn. [4dc] ROW 6: INCREASE ROW. ch2, dc in same st, dc in next 2sts, dc in last st or sp, turn. [5dc] ROWS 7 - 39: repeat rows 5 and 6 with the increase on odd number rows. ROW 39: will have 21sts, Sew all your triangles together in the pattern of your choice, or join with sc and ch3 loops, using the 2nd ch as a sl st to join the the previous edged triangle. making a lovely linked ch, loop edging as below The Isosceles triangles would join in a hexagon pattern but i preferred the split diamond pattern below JOINED TRIANGLES Using sc in the side of each dc, on the two sides and and ch3 loops. sc in every other st, and ch3 loops, along the ends of the triangles BORDER I tried adding 15 st, triangles to start with but didn't like the effect so decided on a closed 'v' stick border of several rows.. Each round is in a different col. I used shades of blue and green for my border, but as its a left over yarn blanket then use what you have and like. ROUND 1: 2dc, in each ch3, loop, 2dc, ch3, 2dc, in corner ch3 loops. ROUND 2-6: 2dc in each sp between pairs of dc, creating a closed 'v' st, with 2dc , ch3, 2dc, in each ch3, corner sp. Although it looks like a rectangle when laid out it is in fact almost a perfect square, as you can see when you fold it in half diagonally all the triangles joined together with sc, ch3, sc. A wash to block it and it will be ready for use...enjoy

Whether you're cleaning out your yarn stash, or just looking for ways to use up leftover bits of yarn while spending more time indoors, today's blog post shares 7 ways use up leftover yarn and make sure that no yarn goes to waste! Idea #1: Make Wool Dryer Balls Many traditional dryer sheets contain chemicals and fragrance, which can irritate sensitive skin. Try making your own dyer balls with leftover bits of wool yarn to reduce drying time (wool fibers are able to absorb a surprising amount of moisture!) and also reduce static electricity. Knitwear designer Louise Tilbrook has a fabulous tutorial on making your own dryer balls with leftover yarn. Tip: Use our nostepinne to start winding your dryer ball to create a perfect round shape! Image source: louisetilbrookdesigns.net Idea #2: Use As Stuffing The next time you're run low on poly-fil stuffing, mix in your leftover yarn snippets to fill your toy or pillow projects! Idea #3: Decorate Gifts Make pom poms, tassels, or simply wrap yarn around your package several times to add a bit of color to any gift! Idea #4: Make a Magic Ball Pick several coordinating colors of the same yarn weight to join together into a "magic ball" that changes colors and textures as you work! Find the free tutorial here from Shiny Happy World. Image source: shinyhappyworld.com Idea #5: Make Do and Mend Repairing small holes in your knitted or crocheted garments doesn't require a full skein of yarn— typically just a yard or two will suffice. Choose a coordinating (but contrasting) color of yarn to visibly mend your next project; click here for tips from Spin-Off Magazine or watch a helpful video shared by @bookhou on Instagram. Image source: Spin-Off Blog Perfect Patterns for Leftover Yarn There are so many patterns that are written for leftover bits of yarn, many of which are available for free. Here are a few of our favorites. Free Knitting Patterns Leftover KAL by Tina v/d Berg is an any-weight, any yardage pattern for a brioche scarf. For those who prefer cowls, check out I Love Trash by C.B. Williams for an in-the-round cowl that you can easily customize. If you have lots of leftover sock yarn, try Dr. Frankenscraps by Fran Singer to make a unique mismatched pair of socks. Keep hands warm with the Drops of Spring Mitts by Quinn Reverendo, which uses small amounts of Aran-weight yarn to create a pixelated design. Mash it Up by Babs Ausherman uses two strands of fingering weight yarn held together to create endless color combinations. Free Crochet Patterns Magic Monday by Brenda Grobler uses fingering weight yarn and several crochet stitches to make a delightfully wearable cowl. Elizabeth Pardue's Scrapadelic Scarf coordinates with her Stripey Mitts pattern to put your leftover worsted weight yarns to good use. The Scrap Buster Beanie by Esther Thompson is a great way to practice a few new-to-you crochet stitches while also using up leftover yarn. Casapinka's Blanket of Calm can be easily adjustable depending on what yarn you have on hand and how big you'd like your blanket to be. Like this post? Pin it!

I've had a bit of free time this month so I decided I wanted to learn something new. I was very close to picking up my ukelele again and self teach myself but I remember how frustrating I found it last year so it's safe to say that's on the back burner again. Yes, I decided to learn how to knit. Knitting is something that my nan always used to do when she was around. It would be a miracle if you could sit down on the sofa without a knitting needle striking up from somewhere and digging you in places you really don't want to be dug! I was sent some wool from CosyWool* to try out so it was indeed time to hunt down some online tutorials so I could teach myself to knit. After a lot of practising with some cheap wool I picked up in a pound shop, I soon got the hang of it. I then decided to go out and buy some better needles from Hobbycraft which are 4mm so it's a nice average size. I was recently challenged to knit a scarf to try and win some knitting goodies so I can carry on with my new found love! The wool I chose from CosyWool is a little crazy but I love it! Here's the final result... What do you think? I am so happy with it and can't wait to wear it! I really want to try and knit some matching mitten gloves! Ashleigh x GREAT NEWS! The Gabriella Tee is a beautiful knit with lace details. The tee is worked top-down, in the round. First the left side of the yoke is worked back and forth, with raglan increases and increases to shape the neckline, followed by the right side of the yoke. The work is then joined in the front. The back neckline is shaped further and once completed, the work is joined at the back. From this point on, the rest of the yoke is knitted in the round. After finishing the yoke, the work is divided into sleeves and body. Stitches are cast on under the arms. The body is knitted in the round until the desired length has been reached. You can choose to work the stitches under the arms in a lace pattern or work the entire body in stockinette stitch. Stitches are bound off using the i-cord bind off. The sleeves are worked in the round, continuing the lace pattern, and bound off using the i-cord bind off. In a final step, stitches are picked up for the neckline to add an i-cord edge. NOTE: Twinning is winning! You can buy the adult & junior version of a design at a reduced price :) (’twinning bundle’) The discount is automatically calculated at the check-out when buying both the adult & junior pattern. The Gabriella Tee is a tee with a positive ease of approx. 10-14 cm 4-4.5 inches compared to the bust circumference. The sizes XS (S) M (L) XL (2XL) 3XL (4XL) 5XL correspond to a bust circumference (of the body) of approx. 74 (84) 94 (104) 114 (124) 134 (144) 155 cm 29.25 (33) 37 (41) 45 (48.75) 52.75 (56.76) 61 inches respectively.
