Inis Oírr, pronounced inish-eer, is the eastern-most and smallest of the Aran Islands of Ireland, located in Galway Bay. Traditional Aran sweaters hail from these Islands, and this wrap, named after this smallest island, was inspired by these designs. The Inis Oírr is designed to be multi-use – a blanket or an oversized shawl to …

Fit for a goddess, the Scallops and Lace Sweater is a gorgeous option for any day of the year. The bottom half of this beautiful knit sweater pattern features elegant, scalloped stitch work that gives the piece a feminine flair. The scallops are echoed in the cuffs of the three-quarter length sleeves and are balanced nicely by a simple, round neckline. This charming, lightweight sweater would look great with jeans as well as a skirt.

Lochlyn Shawl is a triangular shawl knit sideways. The shawl is rich in texture and colorwork but easy to knit. The two colorways used are simply alternated every two rows, with only one color used per row. The broken garter pattern and the color changes are uncomplicated but interesting to work. A deep, garter stitch border finishes off this soft and tactile wrap. If you would like a cowl instead, check out Lochie Cowl pattern. The pattern includes both Charts and written instruction. The shawl is easily adjustable to any size. The sample shown, blocked: 62 inches X 24 inches deep. Yarn used in the sample: Color A - 2 skeins Tosh DK in Glazed Pecan; Color B - 1 skein Tosh DK in Shire Yardage requirements for the size shown: Color A - 334m/362yds and Color B - 189m/205yds Color A is used for the solid lines running through the shawl, as well as for the single color garter stitch border. Many thanks to innersparkle for test knitting this pattern for me. Read more about the patterns in my blog post here.
Available in English. Charts only, no row by row written instructions. This is a collaboration between me, Earthfaire and The Unique Sheep. The yarn I used is a available as a pre-order from this site: Earthfaire.com It has come to my attention that Kelly of The Unique Sheep is retiring at the end of this year (2022), so this is the last chance to get the dedicated sets from Earthfaire. A note on yarn choice. The flame stitch has elongated sts that works well with wool and wool blends. If using slippery yarn like seasilk or tencel, you may find that the elongated sts grow too much for your liking. You can work less wraps when doing the original 5 elongated stitches to avoid this. I recommend using a less slippery yarn. Difficulty: Medium to advanced. A small part of the shawl has pattern on both sides. Yarn: Leeana for Earthfaire, by The Unique Sheep, 51% bombyx silk/49% merino wool, 440 yards (402 m)/100 g. 150 g or 6 mini skeins are needed to make the shawl as shown. To be sure you have enough, consider getting an extra skein. The shawl as shown is worked in the colourway “Dance of the Dryads”, using colours 7-12. Alternatively use Kiri by The Unique Sheep, 80% superwash merino, 20% Tussah silk, 434 yards (397 m) / 4 oz (113 g). This is slightly heavier weight yarn, and you will need seven 1 oz mini skeins or 7 oz to make the same size as shown. Construction: The shawl is worked from the bottom and up. The last 12 sts are either grafted together, or bound off using a 3-needle bind off. Beads: Optional. Use size 6/0 seed beads, or the size you think fits your yarn. For the size shown, you will need 581 beads. Size: As shown 26.5 inches (67 cm) deep and 49.5 inches (126 cm) wide. The size is adjustable, so if you want to make it larger, you can very easily by just adding repeats at the cast on edge. Remember to buy more yarn in that case. Needles and hooks: US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needle or the size you need to get a fabric you like. Crochet hook in the same size for the cast on (long tail cast on can be used instead of the crochet cast on). Spare needle in the same size if you wish to work the 3-needle bind off. Other notions: Stitch markers. Small crochet hook or other gizmo for placing beads (if using beads). Darning needle. Link to techniques used: Chinese Waitress Cast on with crochet hook. Twisted edge sts Different link to twisted edge st if the first one doesn’t work And a link to the same video uploaded to Facebook

Sprig Of Hope is a crescent shaped shawl that starts out with a step by step garter tab cast on that grows into a Trellis Lace Inset and ends with the Sprig Lace Border. This shawl is a very friendly pattern suited for those new to shawl knitting, while remaining appealing to the more experienced knitter. The end product of this pattern is a nice full bodied shawl that when wrapped stays in place due to the lovely crescent shape.

The shawl is almost the same on both sides and can be used and is beautiful, on both sides. Echo Wood is a wide top down shawl that is a shallow triangle. Worked in fingering weight yarn or fingering weight yarn and a fuzzy mohair/silk sport weight, the simple garter stitch stripes lead into a section of interesting stitches and cables before resuming the garter stitch for the shawl edge. Knit in either two or three colours this is a simple yet effective and very, very wearable shawl. Two colour shawl requires 100 g of Yarn A, 80 g of Yarn B. Three colour shawl requires 100 g of Yarn A, 75 g of Yarn B and 10 g of Yarn C with a little bit of margin.
4/22/17 I have recently found out that the picture from my project here is being used to link to the Etsy sales page for the cocoon pattern that I used as a general guideline to make this project. I have used perhaps 5% of the cocoon pattern to make what I have here - some came from the tunic pattern (linked above) and the rest from my head. I did not take good notes when I made this as I never expected to make it again or to have anyone else ask me how I made it. Please do not spend $4 on the pattern thinking it will give you the instructions to make what I have made because it won’t. I have requested that my picture be removed from those websites as it is being used to falsely promote the pattern. 10/20 Finished :) Eye ‘cords’ made on US size 5 needle by casting on 26 green, 26 yellow and binding off 29 yellow, 23 green - then coiling and sewing together with yarn ends at the back. Eyes stitched onto the hat with red yarn instead of gluing. Green centers on eyes are darker and more vibrant than they appear in the photo. Don’t ask why it is that I didn’t put all the buttons on the same side…I really have no idea, though that might have been a good idea… 10/19 body knitting complete - just need to get and sew on buttons. I’m thinking now that I wish I had made the stripes wider, but there is no way to be starting over at this point, way too much time investment for this particular project. 10/15 Basic hat and antennae completed, still have to make some eyes and put it all together. I will be heavily modifying the cocoon into an outfit that will not slip down as this will be a costume rather than a photo prop (design elements borrowed from this pattern) and am knitting it single stranded on size US 6 needles. I’m also trying to stick a little closer to the actual colors in the original pictures from the book (purple antennae and only one blue-green color) and to the little rattle I found to go with it all - my middle green is not quite bright enough though. Hope to finish by the end of the week. Baby is 2.5 months old at wearing. Body knit to approx. 20.5 inches - baby is approx. 18 inches from shoulder to toes. Circumference of caterpillar body was about 18-19 inches. :) 10/31 Action shots!
Bramwell is a top-down triangular shawl featuring two traditional leaf lace patterns. I love the way that rows of staggered leaves form a stunning fabric with lots of texture when worked in heavier weight yarns. Many leaf lace patterns are composed of simple stitches and shorter pattern repeats, which make them perfect for newer lace knitters. But even as an experienced lace knitter, I really enjoy working leaf patterns. I find the rhythm of them very relaxing and I love how intuitive they are to memorize. And besides, there is just something comforting about wrapping oneself up in a big leafy hug of a shawl! The Bramwell pattern includes both charts and full written out instructions for those of you who prefer not to use charts. Bramwell would be an excellent project for a “first lace” shawl, as the pattern is filled with detailed explanations, helpful hints and includes lots of video links that show all the stitches and techniques required to knit the shawl. For best results, a solid or tonal yarn made of natural fibers is recommended. While dimensions and yardage are provided for DK weight, Bramwell could effectively be worked in just about any other yarn weight, from fingering to worsted. The size is easy to customize; full instructions are provided, including how to calculate stitch counts for any size. SIZE AND YARDAGE: My gray sample used about 690 yards (631 m) of Hazel Knits Lively DK yarn (Nickel colorway); the purple sample used 650 yards (594 m) of Kelbourne Woolens Scout yarn (Orchid Heather colorway). Both measure about 67 x 33” (170 x 84 cm). The Hazel Knits is a heavier DK than the Scout, which is probably why it used more yarn. NEEDLE SIZE INFO: I used US 7/4.50 needles for the shawl and then switched to US 9/5.50 needles for the bind off. _________________________________________________ A few years back, I’d read about Bramwell, West Virginia, a small Appalachian coal town which in the late 1800s was home to more millionaires per capita than any other place in the U.S. Since I’m interested in industrial history, I decided to check it out. To get there, I followed the Coal Heritage Trail, an educational 187-mile driving trail that weaves through coal country and in many places runs between closely-spaced mountains. It was late October, during peak fall foliage. As I drove, the sheer number of vividly colored leaves that surrounded me—probably numbering in the billions—was awe-inspiring to say the least. I named this very leafy shawl Bramwell in memory of one of my favorite road trips.

If you are covered by the forest, you are completely lost, and no-one can find you. The belief was that you could undo the cover by turning your coat inside out or by bending down and looking back between your legs. Some of the people covered by the forest came back, some disappeared for good. Metsänpeitto is a yoked sweater worked with two colors and has spruce branchlet pattering at the hem and cuffs. The colorwork patterns don’t require long floats and are easy enough even for an unexperienced knitter. If you prefer, you can use more than one contrast color for the hem and cuff patterning. Please, make sure to pick colors with high contrast to make the patterning stand out. The sweater is worked from the bottom up, and the sleeves are worked separately and joined with the body before working the yoke.
For the beads, I used Miyuki colors #18 Silver-lined Light Blue (dragonfly wings and scarf border) and #234 Metallic Gold-lined Crystal (dragonfly bodies). This has been one of my more challenging designs to render. I am pleased with the vision finally coming together. I had actually started playing around with possibilities early this year. Then I’d hit a design block or just wasn’t quite happy yet with what I had. When Patternfish announced their 10,000’th Design Competition, this gave me the motivation (and deadline date!) to tackle this design again. I am so pleased to be selected as one of the finalists. I’d love it if you’d take a moment to vote for Dragonfly Dreams to be the winner. Voting closes Nov. 18, 2011 EST. If you’d prefer to make this scarf longer, each 24-row repeat adds 4” and takes 25 yards of yarn, 14 large beads and 92 small beads. The size I made here makes this a one-skein project using the Buffalo Gold Lux yarn. Actually, I had 4 g of the skein left for this size. That gave me the 10% allowance I like to give when specifying yardages in my published patterns. This allows for leeway in knitter’s variances and sampling.

Very small knitting Look! It’s a teensy-weensy heart knitted on toothpick needles. There’s a law of nature that says that anything made miniature automatically becomes irresistably cute. To do this yourself, hot glue some beads to the ends of toothpicks, and knit using crochet wool. Once you’re done, weave loose ends in and stick a transparent bead on the end to prevent the stitches from falling off. Knit a sweater for your doll!
