Enjoy this beautiful woodcut-style illustration of personified frogs in costume acting out scenes from Kabuki plays by Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Utagawa Kuniyoshi is one of the outstanding Ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo period in the 19th century. He achieved his commercial and artistic breakthrough in 1827 with the first 6 designs of the series The 108 heroes of the Suikoden. The series was about 108 rebels and honorary bandits, based on an old Chinese novel from the 14th century. The story was very popular in Japan. ➤ ABOUT THE POSTER • Museum-quality posters made on thick and durable matte paper. • Each poster is giclée-printed on archival, acid-free paper that yields brilliant prints. • These antique archival pieces of art have been digitally restored and enhanced for printing. • Carefully packaged for protection in transit • Frame not included **Message me for more poster sizes** ➤ Visit my shop Studio Printly for more antique prints! https://www.etsy.com/shop/StudioPrintly

Utagawa Kuniyoshi was a true son of Edo. Born near Nihonbashi in 1797, his father a dyer, he grew up among the hoi polloi in the crowded streets of the low city, where popular stories of tattooed otokodate, the revered 'street knights' of the kabuki stage, were capturing people's imagination. Bluff in behavior, loyal to his friends and generous to his pupils, he also had a well-known passion for cats, whom he often depicted lovingly and humorously in his work.
