I absolutely LOVE this! Education.com has free nursery rhyme worksheets to download. What I think it so great is that they have matched up a nursery rhyme with each letter of the alphabet. As you read through, you and your preschooler can identify the letter you’re working on. I love that the font is clear and simple, they show both the upper and lower-case letter examples on the page and they’re cute! Click here to download and print each worksheet. Slip each one into a clear plastic page protector (keep them altogether in a binder or 3-prong folder) Use a dry erase marker to circle, underline or trace the letters. Count the letters and write the number at the bottom. Erase and repeat later. Love it! Learning letters and nursery rhymes at the same time!

I L.O.V.E. Pete the Cat! My firsties drool when I mention his name! My grandkids can't get enough. It's the only book they want me to read. ...
My family is made up of very competitive bananagrams players. Probably too competitive. But we love it. We love the challenge. We love the brain test. We love the adrenaline when someone yells PEEL fourteen times in a row. So last christmas, my brother Rob had the best gift idea for my mom. He made BIG BANANAGRAMS. Each tile is now 12"x12". Of course my brother bit off more than he could chew, so he didn't finish painting all of the letters for Christmas. What better time to finish this amazing gift? Mother's day. Almost 6 months later. But we are all so glad he finished. This has been one of the best ways to spend an afternoon. Here we are in my mom's backyard. Now, you still get the mental challenge from the original game, with the added bonus of some exercise! And the best part? You don't even realize you are exercising. Well, until the game is over and you are covered in sweat. 'ivy' by the ivy Next, we are taking them to the beach! ::::::::::::::::::: Update: This post has gone completely viral on pinterest and I'm so happy that you have clicked through. I hope you'll stick around! When I originally wrote this post, I didn't include a tutorial. So many people have asked in the comments about how we did this, and I have been answering them, but I thought it might also be helpful to put that info here, too! My brother cut 144 'tiles' from a big sheet of masonite. This material is very durable, doesn't bend and it can hold up to different elements. For those who want to make their own, we recommend luan because it's lighterweight. We love what we have, but if we knew then what we know now, we would have made them with luan. It really makes a difference when you are carrying those tiles to and from. We have ours in a wooden crate and don't move them all that much- probably because they are heavy! Rob cut the masonite into 12 inch squares with a table saw. Then he hand painted the letters. We are a family of artists so it was easiest for my brother to just paint them himself, but if you don't have a steady hand or good handwriting, there are other options. Several people have left me comments saying that they used vinyl stickers or cut letters out with their cricut. Here's the breakdown of how many tiles you will need for each letter. 2: J, K, Q, X, Z 3: B, C, F, H, M, P, V, W, Y 4: G 5: L 6: D, S, U 8: N 9: T, R 11: O 12: I 13: A 18: E Also, we use our tiles for bananagrams because it's fast and exciting, but you could definitely use these for scrabble or even boggle! Again, thank you to everyone who has visited my blog and those who have left comments! They really do make my day. I hope y'all will continue to follow along!

I've got them this time...they fell hook-line-sinker! My whole class is head*over*heels in l-o-v-e with The Pigeon! He's funny, definitely silly, quirky, and very demanding. A great fit for firsties. If you haven't read these books you better run...and I mean fast to your library and check them out people!{I feel a little bossy, but even I love these books.} I picked one up last year and the next thing I knew...I owned every single last one. In these hilarious books by Mo Willems, The Pigeon wants many different things. These books are perfect for teaching needs and wants, plus they put a fun twist on it as well! I read every single book, yes all 4 in one sitting. I know what your thinking...."First graders sat still and were engaged for that long??" YES! They help me list the things The Pigeon wanted from the books and the things we figured he needed to survive (I went back and drew pictures later). They had me reread ALL the books again the next day (they have a "kidmance"----my take on "bromance"----- with these books). Then comes the BEST part! They got to write their own "Don't Let The Pigeon....." books. They were in pigeon heaven...you would like I was having a pigeon party they were so excited. This made the teacher in me melt! Their books blew me away! They were so stinkin' creative! Here's some of their creations: Don't Let the Pigeon Eat Candy Don't Let the Pigeon Eat a Mean Don't Let the Pigeon Dress Up Don't Let the Pigeon be President Don't Let the Pigeon Make a Pizza They had the *best* time sharing these with their classmates. We even put them in our classroom library! If you have any spare time at all, please read these books to your kids. I promise you won't regret it!

When I was student teaching I discovered something that I never knew: I L.O.V.E. teaching science! Funny story-I discovered this while creating a plant unit for student teaching and I have the farthest thing from a green thumb out there. Seriously, I think a plant dies just when I look at it! Ha! Good thing that even dead plants work as great scientist projects! ;) Now, whenever I tell my students that we are going to be scientists (a.k.a. have science) my kids let out a cheer that rivals the cheer that they give when I tell them we have gym! ha! Ok, so maybe the gym cheer is a *little* louder, but it's pretty darn close! ;) Here is part of the reason that my kids beg for science: They actually BECOME scientists and get to wear Scientist Lab coats anytime that we do science! Since science involves lots of hands-on experiments (which I LOVE) and often incorporates supplies and instructions that need to be handled and followed carefully, I came up with the idea to turn old, white T-shirts into scientist lab coats! During science, I address students as "Scientist {insert last name}." All scientists must listen to the head scientist {a.k.a. me} or they will loose their scientist lab coat and the privileges that come with it. Trust me-I've only ever had to take away one lab coat and then there are no problems! At the beginning of the year, I ask parents to send in a clean, white t-shirt and then after learning about being scientists, I have the kids make their own lab coats. Here's how you can have your class become scientists! I promise that not only is this very easy to do, but it is also very effective! I have the students keep their lab coats in their reading book bags on their chair, so that they can easily get and wear the scientist lab coats for science! We will soon be putting on our scientist lab coats again for a SWEET SCIENCE experiment: Valentine's Day style! We will be using three types of Valentine's Candy to make a hypothesis, conduct an experiment, and state a conclusion: Font and Clipart by: Miss Tiina and KPM Doodles Why not make have your kids make scientist lab coats and then use them with this sweet FREEBIE! Just click on the Sweet Science picture or page to download your free copy! What ways do you like to motivate and engage your kids during science? I'd love to hear your ideas!
