Cal's lightsaber originally belonged to his fallen master, Jaro Tapal. Cal then modified its damaged hilt with Cere Junda's saber to create a dynamic weapon that carries the legacies of both his mentors. Cal's tactics have evolved over the years. He's incorporated a crossguard saber hilt and a blaster into his repertoire, alongside the more traditional single-saber, dual-wield, and double-bladed stances. Quote from The Art of JEDI: Survivor

Members of the Scrapper Guild tend to come from low-income communities located all over the galaxy. Most scrappers specialize in a role that defines their skill set, compensation and, in many cases, life expectancy. This class is the rigger class to which Cal belongs. Rigger are daredevils that climb high and risks their lives to disassemble decommissioned ships. They wear a climbing harness, a poncho and often a welding helmet. They are also wearing the company logo and employee number.

Early Cal Kestis character design exploration for JEDI: Survivor. Playing with the theme of ronin, wanderer and survivor. The idea behind this design is he might need to mask his identity while traveling in order to avoid attracting the Empire's attention.

Spoiler alert! Merrin is the witch of Dathomir and is introduced as a powerful foe to be reckoned with. She can use 'magik' and has the ability to raise the dead night sisters. We wanted her identity to have two stages. The robed stage for her introduction on Dathomir and a second version with less garments when she joins the crew. We wanted her to be robed and only partially revealed in order to create mystery. Like Cal, she has lived many years in isolation and this is reflected in her recessed and layered hood. The long robes looked cool but in order to accommodate the cloth simulation and rig, we shortened the lengthy fabric and replaced the long sleeves for tight fitting sleeves, Since this character's color palette is predominantly red and black, I played with materials like silk and leathers, rigid shoulder pads, a long vertical red stripe that leads the eye to an iconic brass circle anchored to a large leather belt.
The origin of BD-1 was the result of a network of different needs and wants. We wanted to provide the hero with a buddy droid that could be carried on the back like Luke carried Yoda during his training days. The buddy AI could provide insights on the world around, deciphering ancient ruins and projecting maps. It's size had to be small enough to allow the character to perform agile exploration and combat without getting in the way. It also required some anchor points. Carrying the droid on the back also permitted it to project messages and use it's light to scan the environment, characters and creatures even when the hero is climbing or fighting. I've always imagined BD as so much more than just a robot, I always thought of BD as a full character with it's own thoughts and emotions. This worked well with the idea of BD being a bipedal droid that could jump off the character's back, run off, discover the world and unlock new paths for the player.

Since Cal is a Jedi in hiding, he could not wear a Jedi robe. We could however hint at his Jedi roots in the silhouette by introducing him wearing a poncho. The poncho made sense for the rainy environment in Bracca but it posed a long set of challenges on the technical and character rigging sides. The poncho was an additional challenge for a character who was already performing agile exploration, combat and would eventually carry a droid on his back. In addition, the cloth had to work withing memory budget without causing performance drops and it had to work with the character rig. The solution resulted in a compromise in length. It respected the anchor points for BD-1 to hold onto and it also included side openings to provide access to the lightsaber. The material is rain resistant. The color palette, with it's large orange color blocking, references some of Ralph Mcquarrie's designs. The graphics and insignia reflect his ship rigging crew and his employee number.

The first time the player encounters Malicos, he is a hooded figure who tries to warn Cal about the witch of Dathomir. His robe is old and worn and shows his lack of decorum and the length of time he has spent on this planet.
