I used to live on the Marsh, so cycled up the hill on the left each morning on my way to work. Not the gentlest start to the day.... The short lane on the right, Hillside, was the original location of the Free Grammar School, founded in 1485, forerunner of the Royal Lancaster Grammar School. The school was rebuilt in 1682, but moved to modern premises on the other side of the city in 1851 and the Hillside building has subsequently been demolished.
