Things To Avoid After Laser Hair Removal Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that involves a laser and showering the skin in light energy. The treatment although safe can have side effects and risks, like any other treatment. Waxing also does have side effects. And so does shaving. The thing with laser hair removal is that most of those risks and side effects can be avoided if patients follow their certified technician’s advice. Thus, here are seven things you must avoid after laser hair removal to keep those risks at a minimum. Talk to your provider before treatment so you can ask questions and understand what is normal and abnormal after a laser hair removal treatment. Laser hair removal is typically conducted by a dermatologist. The process works via concentrated light beams that target hair follicles and break down their roots. Whether you're opting to zap your panty line or your pits , here's what to do post-laser hair removal. Laser hair removal doesn't guarantee permanent hair removal. When hair regrows, it's usually finer and lighter in color. You might need maintenance laser treatments for long-term hair reduction. Read on to learn more about the do's and don'ts regarding laser hair removal aftercare, and when you should contact your physician for help. Expose yourself to direct sunlight Avoid sun exposure on the area you want to treat and wear sunscreen when you go outside Don't remove your hair by plucking, waxing, or doing anything else that irritates the hair follicles, Trim or shave your hair to expose the skin but avoid irritating the follicles It's also important to avoid getting a natural tan or applying self-tanning products before your appointment, as a tan may make the laser less effective. Avoiding sun exposure and UV rays is no secret to anybody. Whether before or after your laser hair removal session, staying out of the sun is one of top things to avoid doing after laser hair removal. The treatment will leave your skin very sensitive and therefore more vulnerable to external aggressors. Unprotected skin may be susceptible to sunburns and other sun damage. Skin just after laser hair removal will be even more so. While some sun damage may fade with time, others will be more permanent and can have very bad consequences. That is why you need to cover your skin in the area you are treated with laser. We get that you may not be able to cover some areas. The face for example. You should still try to avoid UV rays at a maximum. It would not be wise to undergo upper lip laser hair removal a day before going skiing. Make sure you also apply a physical sunblock with strong SPF to protect the skin that is not covered. Avoid sunbathing for at least two weeks after your session. Use tanning beds Using tanning beds is another thing you should avoid doing after laser hair removal. It basically comes as a nice segue to our point above. Tanning beds produce an artificial tan by imitating the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. A typical tanning bed emits 95% UVA and only 5% UVB, although some new models produce only UVA. However, going for a tanning session after your laser hair removal session will expose your already sensitive skin to UV rays. Thus, you risk damaging your skin. Worst case scenarios would lead to burns, scars or even skin diseases such as cancer. To sum up, tanning beds make you take unnecessary risks. You should avoid tanning beds at least six weeks before your laser hair removal treatment and do not return for another seven weeks after your session. Since laser hair removal sessions are six weeks apart, during your laser treatment, it is just wiser to not sun tan artificially at all. Take a hot shower or work out Once you are done with your laser hair removal session, it is best to avoid hot showers, sauna, working out or any sweat inducing activity. First of all, the skin is vulnerable after laser hair removal and more susceptible to external aggressors. Hot water can burn and blister the skin so better go for a cool shower. Avoid hot showers for 48 hours after your session. You will need to avoid sauna and hot tubs as well. It is also important to avoid using heating pads as well as this can cause redness and irritation of your skin. You should not workout after your session and wait at least 24 hours. Indeed, the heat produced by the energy can stay under the skin up to 24 hours. Not only are gym outfits usually very close to the body and the friction may cause irritation. Plus, heat makes for an ideal environment for bacteria to develop. Thus, you risk getting a skin infection. Touch or scratch the skin We mentioned above that laser hair removal can leave your skin very vulnerable. You may experience redness and irritation. While it may be tempting to scratch the skin, you should refrain from doing so. Excessive scratching or picking at the skin will only worsen the redness and swelling. Too much scratching may also lead to bleeding and scarring. Bleeding and an open wound that you keep on touching can lead to infection as well. Therefore, you must avoid touching the skin. If the sensation really is barely bearable, an effective option is to utilize some type of soothing moisturizer. Moisturizing the skin will speed up your skin’s recovery time and will help combat dryness. Applying aloe vera after your session will help too. Make sure the cream or gel you use has a neutral pH and is hypoallergenic. Wax, pluck or sugar Do not use any other hair removal methods or products, other than shaving, on the treated area during the course of your laser treatments, as it will prevent you from achieving the best results. It may be tempting to do some touch up at home yourself between laser hair removal sessions. If you were thinking about it, stop right there. First of all, waxing or sugaring are very aggressive to the skin and would damage your sensitive skin after a session. Second of all, they would just make laser hair removal ineffective and be a waste of your money. As opposed to shaving that just cuts the hair but still leaves it there, waxing removes the hair along with the root. Thus, there is nothing left for the laser to target. Laser hair removal only works if there is a hair leading to the follicle. Furthermore, hair that is removed with wax may take up to six weeks to fully grow back. Since each laser session is every six weeks, it is likely that not all hair removed will have grown back and be in the right stage of growth. Thus, your laser hair removal session will be able to target less hair and won’t be as efficient. Avoid topical beauty products This is one thing to avoid after laser hair removal. However, unless you undergo laser hair removal on an area such as the legs or the bikini, this probably would not apply. Indeed, you are more likely to apply beauty products on your face. Thus, you must avoid applying makeup and other fragranced products to your face. It is better to wait at least 24 hours up to 72 hours before you put on makeup. The skin will be very sensitive after your session and must be given time to complete its healing process. Beauty products may irritate the skin or clog pores, which can lead to infections. Thus, it is better to not use topical products. Avoid makeup, body washes, deodorant and fragrance. Ignore your technician’s advice Last but not least of all the things you should avoid doing after laser hair removal is ignoring your technician's advice. They will tell you of all of the above before you leave the spa. Their advice will make the procedure safer and more efficient. Following aftercare recommendations is the best way to ensure you get great results but also that you do not experience negative side effects. Indeed, while laser hair removal has very few risks, it still has some. However, those risks and side effects can be easily avoided since they are very often the results of lack of care. If you follow the technician’s advice, there is no reason you should suffer bad consequences from a laser session. To ensure a successful laser session, shave at least three hours before. Apply sunscreen on your skin if you stay in the sun. Wash off your skin any creams, lotion or moisturizer. If possible, wear ample clothes. If you are on medication, inform your technician as some can increase photosensitivity. Aftercare recommendations include staging out of the sun and avoiding sun beds. Avoid hot showers, the gym, saunas and hot tubs. Do not remove hair on your own and avoid chemical creams, waxing or sugaring. They will damage your skin and interfere with the treatment. Do not use makeup and other beauty products for at least a day. What about at-home lasers? At-home laser hair removal aftercare is virtually the same. But experts recommend talking with a professional about laser hair removal. Follow us on Instagram for more beauty tips!
10 tips tegen rusteloze benen. En hoe een roestvrij stalen lepel je daarbij kan helpen.
Laser hair removal is on everybody's lips these days. For good reason. It is one of the two long-term hair reduction methods out there. And it is the cheapest of the two. Laser hair removal gets everybody talking. It is a procedure that is more and more common. Laser hair removal business flourish, people are increasingly willing to make the investment, trust in the procedure improves as well. Yet, laser hair removal is still the victim of many misconceptions that keeps spreading like fire. That is why we are here today to clarify some laser hair removal facts. 10 Laser Hair Removal Facts You Need To Know About As a matter of facts, if you are considering laser hair removal, it pays to study up. Even though not considered a medical procedure but a cosmetic procedure, it still has more implications that regular hair removal methods. Let's place a little reminder here while we are at it. Even though waxing and shaving both sound easier, they are not as convenient and efficient in the long-term than laser hair removal. We already know all too well that waxing can have negative side effects. 1. Laser hair removal is not painful This is probably the biggest misconception about laser hair removal circulating around. Maybe because other hair removal methods such as electrolysis and waxing are painful. Thus, by association laser hair removal would be too? You can relax, we guarantee that it is not! Laser hair removal is actually very tolerable and some will describe the treatment as pain-free. It is possible that some patients experience discomfort. As a matter of fact, the sensation felt during laser hair removal is that of pinching. At Infinity Laser Spa, we only use diode laser hair removal machine with ice technology. The model we use is a V-Frost Diode 808 Laser Hair Removal machine by Vertex Lasers. Ice technology allows to cool down the skin so that the laser does not heat it up too much and the client is comfortable at all times. The sensation felt during a laser hair removal session is usually described as a combination of pinching and heat. 2. It works on all skin tones Another big misconceptions that our laser hair removal facts will debunk for you. Laser hair removal uses a beam of light that will target pigments in the hair in order to get to the follicle. Strong damage on the latter will stop any further hair growth. The laser can target the pigment in the hair mostly because of the contract between skin and hair. As a matter of fact, ideal candidates for laser hair removal have fair skin and dark hair. Thus, a patient with a dark skin and dark hair would not present that contrast. As a consequence, for a long time, people of color were not advise to undergo laser hair removal. Indeed, due to this lack of contrast, the laser could target the melanin in the skin, which meant dark skin were more prone to burning and scaring. However, modern technology changed all that. New machines using Nd:YAG laser have a wavelength that are both safe and efficient on dark skin. Indeed, such wavelengths are not absorbed by the melanin in the skin as they go straight into the dermis. Thus, laser hair removal works on all skin complexions and tones. 3. The treatment may not work on light hair Laser hair removal works on all skin complexions. New technologies have allowed people with light skin, dark skin and everyone in between to enjoy all the many advantages laser hair removal procures. However, if this applies to skin tone, it does not when it comes to hair color. Indeed, the laser produces a beam of light that target the pigment in the hair. To work, their must be melanin. If there is no melanin, no pigment, then the hair will not absorb the heat and will not transfer it to the follicle. Blond and grey hair are weak in pigments. White hair lack them altogether. As a consequence, laser hair removal may not work at all on very light hair. The laser would simply not be able to get to the hair follicle. Even though fair haired patients may not be able to treat areas where the hair is very light, they can still undergo laser hair removal on other areas where the hair tends to be darker. Such is the case for the underarms and the bikini or mankini for example. 4. You need to get off some medications Although laser hair removal is not a painful process, there still may be some pain associated depending on each patient's personal level of pain tolerance, some medication may also get in the mix. Some medications will increase photo-sensitivity while some other topical. Photosensitive drugs contain chemical compounds with photo-reactive agents that cause them to react to UV light. On the other hand, oral medications can have a negative effect on your results. Antibiotics are a good example of photosensitive drugs. You need to wait ten to fifteen days after the last day of your treatment before going for a session. Photosensitive medication includes antibiotics, retinoids, antidepressants, allergy medication, cholesterol medication, and others (check the list here). If a patient is on a Roaccutane treatment (or anything with isotretinoin), they have to wait at least six months before doing their treatment as the combination of both may lead to prolonged healing and scarring. 5. You have to be patient Laser hair removal is a commitment. You will have to come for a session every six weeks or so. This is mostly due to the hair growth cycle, which is unique to each individual as well as each hair on a person's body. Laser hair removal can only target hair in the anagen phase of growth, since it is when the hair connects to the follicle. Unfortunately, only 20% of all your hair are in that stage at any point in time. As a consequence, the laser will only be able to target up to 20% of your hair during each session. Furthermore, the hair will not magically fall off or disappear after your first session. It will takes two to three weeks after your first treatment to see a difference as the follicle that was damaged slowly ejects the hair out. Avoid shaving until ten days after each session to let the hair get out smoothly. You will see more results as you progress in your treatment. You will also have to be quite regular in your appointment. 6. You have to stop tanning The best time to start laser hair removal is the beginning of fall for a very simple reason: your chances to expose your body to the sun are drastically reduced. Fall also marks the end of summer holidays, when everybody gets back to work and ditch their swimsuit for a business casual attire. Thus, the tan you got a few months before will fade on its own. And that's what you need. Tan changes your skin tone, which could mess up with the laser settings and efficiency. It also increased the photosensitivity of your skin. Beyond tan which takes two weeks to come off, too much exposure to the sun may give you sunburns, which should not get in the mix with laser hair removal. That is why you should avoid direct sunlight at least two weeks before your session but also two weeks after. Whether you are in the sun or not make sure to apply a very strong UV sunblock with SPF 30 at least. Similarly, stay away from tanning beds, self-tanners and any other tanning creams or methods. 7. You must shave prior to your appointment We have written a complete article as per why it is essential that each patient shaves before each of their laser hair removal session. Yet, let's drop a little reminder here. It is after all one of the mist important laser hair removal facts. It is not the hair that the laser targets, but the hair pigment. Said pigment is present in the whole length of the hair up from the tip down to the root which connects to the follicle. The laser aims to damage the follicle enough with heat to prevent any further growth. If the hair is not clean-shaven, the pulse of light will heat the whole hair. The beam is likely to burn the hair as well as the skin around it. Furthermore, a long hair would absorb too much heat and less of it will be transferred down to the follicle. As a result, long hair reduces the effectiveness of the procedure. Remember that even though laser hair removal is more affordable than before, it is still your wallet that will have to put up with some extra sessions. 8. You cannot pluck or wax Laser hair removal may be combined with shaving in between sessions. However, it cannot be done alongside other hair removal methods, especially if those remove the hair from the shaft entirely. Both waxing and plucking will remove the whole hair, from tip to root. Thus, there will be nothing connected to the follicle to transfer the heat. Furthermore, there will be nothing to target altogether. Plucking and waxing as well as bleaching impede the process of laser hair removal. Bleaching removes the pigment for the hair. As you now know, laser hair removal is not effective on hair without melanin. If you wish to remove your hair in between sessions, go the shaving route. The hair is cute flat at the surface of the skin and the root is still attached to the follicle, with enough hair under the skin to be targeted by the laser. 9. Laser hair removal as more benefits Waxing and shaving have a lot of well-known negative side effects that will make you say stop. However, razor cuts and ingrown hair probably are the biggest two of those side effects known to women. Waxing will remove the hair in the opposite side to growth. The hair grows back weaker and can potentially curl, staying trapped under the skin. There is also just one tiny step between ingrown hair and infection. Laser hair removal can really help prevent ingrown hair. Since it damages the follicle to prevent hair growth, it also reduces ingrown hair. They can't be in there is no hair. Waxing and shaving can also really irritate the skin, so beyond smooth skin, laser hair removal reduces irritation to the skin. It looks like all the problems you faced with other hair removal methods are solved with laser hair removal. 10. You can't go to the gym afterwards Last but not least of our 10 laser hair removal facts is one that may please a lot of patients. The gym is great, but not going to the gym is also great. Do not celebrate to quick however, as this recommendation applies for the twenty-four hours after your session only. The reason is because the heat from the laser stays in your skin for twenty-four hours. Thus, you need to avoid any activities that may bring extra heat to your skin, such as working out, hot showers, etc. If you do not, you run the risk of creating a lovely warm environment for bacteria to multiply and give you spots. That's 10 laser hair removal facts you needed to know about before booking your first appointment. Laser hair removal democratizes and is more affordable. Yet, it still requires some research prior to taking a decision. If you are hesitant and still need answers to your questions, you can also book a free consultation with a laser technician. They will be able to answer all your questions and recommend a course of action for your treatment.

Hollywood movies sell pregnancy as one of the most beautiful things in the world and a key step in a woman's life. Sure, it is significant and life-changing, and each woman will live her pregnancy differently. What those movies tend to forget is that many things suddenly become off game when you are pregnant: some foods, some vegetables, drinking, exercising too intensely, etc. What about laser hair removal though? Is laser hair removal safe while pregnant? Because even what you do with your skin can be disrupted by a pregnancy. Is laser hair removal safe while pregnant? As of today, there aren't any studies proving otherwise. Thus, in theory, undergoing laser hair removal while pregnant should be safe. However, doctors highly recommend pregnant women not to undergo laser hair removal during pregnancy due to the lack of information about the effect on the fetus. How does hair growth changing during pregnancy? Pregnancy is a moment in a woman's life that will hugely impact her body. Hormone are awash. Higher levels of estrogen and androgen can cause hair to grow in places where it never appeared before, especially in the third trimester. You may find hair on your belly while you never had it before. Since hair growth is linked to hormones and that hormones also do impact the results of laser hair removal, it is possible that you may see regrowth on an area that you had laser on before. However, it generally goes away once you are postpartum. Other factors affecting laser hair removal while pregnant When you are pregnant, the skin tends to be more sensitive due to increased blood circulation. Thus, any kind of hair removal will seem more painful than prior to the beginning of the pregnancy. You may also have to take hyperpigmentation into consideration, which might impact the effectiveness of laser hair removal. How long in postpartum can I proceed with laser hair removal? Since pregnancy will affect your skin sensitivity, pigmentation as well as hair growth, it is wiser to wait until you are post-partum and not undergo laser hair removal while pregnant. We recommend to wait until you are done with nursing. However, we do understand that a change in hair growth might be cumbersome for some women. In that case, we ask for a doctor's note giving you permission to do laser hair removal earlier. What if I become pregnant after buying my laser hair removal package? If you become pregnant after buying a package with us or starting your sessions, you can call us and freeze your package. You will be able to resume your treatment after being done with pregnancy and nursing. Get more tips and information on laser hair removal and skincare on our blog. Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that is all about timing. Missing a session or not sticking to your schedule can affect your laser hair removal results. This is because there are a few things to take into account when booking a session and starting your treatment. Below are the five main things that can have an impact on your laser hair removal results. Your hair growth cycle The hair growth cycle plays a big part in the efficiency of laser hair removal. Simply because the treatment only works on hair that is in the anagen phase of growth. Indeed, it is the only time when both the hair and follicle connect, allowing the light energy to travel from the former to the later. Unfortunately, only 20% of all body hair is in the anagen phase of growth at any point in time. The remaining 80% of hair is in one of the other three stages: catagen, telogen, exogen. Thus, one session can only treat up to 20% of the anagen hair. That is why treatments always include at least six sessions and why you must wait six weeks between sessions. Indeed, those six weeks give time to the hair to move from the exogen to the anagen phase so they can be targeted by the laser. The thing with the hair growth cycle is that not only is it unique to each individual but also to each hair. There is thus no way to know how much time each hair will need before it is in the right phase of growth. Nor is there a way to know how long each hair will stay in each phase or if every single hair follicle is currently producing hair. Because the hair growth cycle is difficult to track, it can be difficult to treat 100% of hair in those six sessions. It is possible that even after your initial treatment, some follicle air suddenly produces hair simply because the hair they produced was not in the right stage of growth all this time. The best way to get good results regardless of your hair growth cycle is to keep a tight schedule. Make sure you come in for a session every six weeks and that you follow pre and post-session care recommendations very strictly. You may not have control over how quick your hair grows, but you have control over helping to make your treatment smoother. Your hormone levels Hormones can have an impact on your laser hair removal results simply because hair growth is triggered by hormones. This means that should you have higher hormone levels, your hair growth will be faster and you may not see results straight away. For example, excess male hormones such as testosterone will stimulate hair growth. Thus, women or men receiving hormone replacement therapy at the time of hair removal may see the decrease of hair after treatment but will have more regrowth than someone who is not receiving hormone therapy. This can also be the case for some with other hormone imbalances. Even though hormone imbalances may interfere with the treatment, it won’t have drastic impacts. Patients will still be able to see a clear difference before and after their treatment. Thus, laser hair removal remains a great solution for transgender people, especially when transitioning from male to female. Although the impact of laser hair removal results will be much smaller, taking hormonal contraceptives may also have an impact on the treatment. While pregnant women should not undergo laser hair removal, should they have done the treatments before pregnancy, they may see hair growth in places that were treated or that did not have hair. Your skin tone and hair color Laser hair removal works best on people with light skin and dark hair. This is because the hair to skin contrast is so sharp, the laser will not have any issue spotting the hair against the skin. However, that does not mean that laser hair removal only works on people with fair skin and dark hain. Indeed, laser hair removal works on all skin tones and hair color. However, treating dark hair on dark skin or fair hair on light skin may be trickier and take longer. Indeed, the lower the hair to skin contrast, the more difficult it is for the laser to find the hair and send the light energy through the dermis to the follicle. Laser technology improvement such as ND: YAG lasers and diode lasers allow for safe and effective treatment of people of color. With such machines, the energy gets to the hair follicle without relying too much on melanin to do so. They provide a good solution for people of color. However, in essence, their hair remains harder to target and thus, laser treatments may require more sessions. Treating fair hair is also trickier. Here, the issue is the lack of pigments. Indeed, blonde and ginger hair are very low in pigments. Thus, they are very difficult to target and to treat. However, a diode laser with a 755nm wavelength will allow to safely treat fair hair. However, because they are harder to target, it is likely that patients will need additional sessions to ensure every single hair follicle is permanently damaged and unable to produce new hair. Your hair removal history Laser hair removal is a long-term hair growth reduction method. It will reduce hair growth by up to 90%. While it does not classify as a permanent hair removal method, a lot of patients will experience permanent hair removal. Electrolysis is the only permanent method. Even though no other methods will lead to similar results, some may help. Of course, if you have shaved or used depilatory creams your whole life, you will have not started the hair growth reduction process. Indeed, both methods do not contribute to hair growth reduction. Creams dissolve the hair, shaving cuts it flat at the surface of the skin. Root and follicle remain. If only they may stimulate hair growth. Waxing, plucking and sugaring on the other hand will contribute to hair growth reduction but in the very long-term. Repetitive waxing will end up damaging the hair follicle. Eventually, patients will see a decrease in hair growth. However, this will take a very long time. Patients who have been waxing for years and switch to laser hair removal may see faster results. As mentioned above, this is because repetitive waxing will eventually damage hair follicles enough so that they won’t produce any new hair. Other important factors There are other factors that will affect your laser hair removal results. Most of them are related to daily habits, lifestyle and aftercare recommendations. Of course, the stricter your schedule and the better you abide by the rules, the better your results will be. Artificial tanning, which include sunbathing, tanning beds and tanning creams, will all interfere with laser hair removal. Indeed, tanning puts the skin in an excited state. Thus, patients should stop tanning ten days prior to their session and avoid sun exposure for at least 15 days after. If they cannot avoid direct sunlight, i.e. if you have a laser treatment on your face, you will have to apply a physical sunblock with SPF 30 at least. Tanning just before your laser hair removal session may be dangerous and you may have to reschedule, which will change your schedule and interfere with the whole treatment. Should you be taking medication such as antibiotics you will need to wait at least 10 after you end your treatment and before you can come in for a session. Indeed, such medication increases photosensitivity. Accutane on the other hand is completely incompatible with laser hair removal. Indeed, it will increase the risks of scarring. Thus, patients should wait at least 6 months after they stop their Accutane treatment and before they start laser hair removal. Not respecting pre and post-session care recommendations can affect your laser hair removal results. Indeed, it may either force you to change your schedule or even to stop your treatment altogether for a few weeks or even months. You may not have control over some factors, but you will over others. That is why it is so important to stick to your schedule, respect care recommendations and protect your skin.
