Lay's Creamy Bacon Potato Salad Chips - Walmart Better late than never, right? My friend Sam actually told me about these chips a while ago. Maybe over a month ago? Anyway, they sounded pretty interesting and I wanted to give them a try, so when I saw them at Walmart during my hunt for the Key Slime Twinkies, I snagged myself a bag to review. I'm not sure why they went with a red-toned bag, maybe because of red potatoes? But this is such a bizarre coral-y shade of red. It makes me think of cosmetics and clothes, not food, and something about it just feels...odd. I may have finally gone off the graphic design deep end. Other than the color choice, the rest of the bag follows Lay's current design template. Photo related to flavor? Check. Light sans-serif white font? Yup! Big ol' logo slapped on there? You betcha'! The bag functions well and it looks...okay, if you're not a stickler for color like myself. Once opened, the chips inside smell creamy, similar to sour cream chips, a little smokey, and meaty. At first sniff, it's like a baconified-version of sour cream and cheddar. Not bad at all, but it doesn't make me think of potato salad. I popped a chip into my mouth and it's pretty snackable. The boldest flavoring is the sour cream-like base, followed by a light chive or onion, and ending on a salty liquid smoke note. Does it taste like potato salad? Well, kind of. I mean, it's a potato chip, so it'll obviously have the potato aspect locked down, but the seasoning isn't quite potato-salad-like for me. Then again, my aunt Missy makes THE best potato salad (with bacon) and it puts all potato salads and potato-salad-flavored things to shame. When comparing these chips to her side-dish, the Lays version obviously pales in comparison, but you know what? These chips taste a lot better than premade grocery store potato salads, and even if they aren't a spot-on flavor recreation, they're really snackable. I found myself reaching for more as i wrote up this review, and that's always a good sign. Would I buy these again? I might. The flavoring compliments grilled food nicely, and it'll be a nice switch up from the traditional sour cream and onion, or sour cream and cheddar, but the bacon flavoring tends to linger on the tongue. Without something else to lessen the bacon-y-ness, these can start to taste pretty one-note. So for individual snacking, I might pass, but for gatherings and social events, these could be a lot of fun. Overall, I'd say it's worth trying, and if you're a fan of sour cream and cheddar, you'd most likely enjoy this slightly bacon-y twist. © Maria Smith http://poison-and-antidote.net Like Sometimes Foodie's Facebook page to keep up with all my foodie adventures!
