The plumed basilisk is a species of lizard native to Costa Rica. Plumed basilisks are omnivorous and will eat insects, small mammals, smaller species of lizards, fruits and flowers. This lizard is able to run short distances across water using both its feet and tail for support, an ability shared with the East Indian water lizard (Hydrosaurus amboinensis). In Costa Rica, this has earned the plumed basilisk the nickname "Jesus Christ lizard". It is an excellent swimmer and can stay under water for up to 30 minutes. His leaf-like camouflage seemed to make him a bit complacent as he let me get close enough to take this shot. Then again, he could have been thinking, "just take the picture will you, I have bugs to eat!"
