Collins Book Bundle 1907 | Vintage Antique Leather Bound Books | Kenilworth and Cranford; burgundy leather bound - small pocket book - 6 x 4 inches gold gilt page edges London & Glasgow Collins Clear-Type Press Kenilworth by Sir Walter Scott - Kenilworth, novel by Sir Walter Scott, published in 1821 and considered one of his finest historical novels. Set in Elizabethan England, the plot relates the disaster that follows an attempt by the earl of Leicester, a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, to avoid the queen's displeasure at his marriage. Cranford - A Tale by Mrs. Gaskell; Elizabeth Gaskell's portrait of kindness, compassion, and hope Cranford depicts the lives and preoccupations of the inhabitants of a small village - their petty snobberies, appetite for gossip, and loyal support for each other in times of need This is a community that runs on cooperation and gossip, at the very heart of which are the daughters of the former rector: Miss Deborah Jenkyns and her sister Miss Matty, But domestic peace is constantly threatened in the form of financial disaster, imagined burglaries, tragic accidents, and the reapparance of long-lost relatives. to Lady Glenmire, who shocks everyone by marrying the doctor. When men do appear, such as 'modern' Captain Brown or Matty's suitor from the past, they bring disruption and excitement to the everyday life of Cranford. In her introduction, Patricia Ingham places the novel in its literary and historical context, and discusses the theme of female friendship and Gaskell's narrative technique. This edition also contains an account of Gaskell's childhood in Knutsford, on which Cranford is based, appendices on fashion and domestic duties supplemented by illustrations, a chronology of Gaskell's life and works, suggestions for further reading, and explanatory notes. The books show some age; the covers are a little shabby and there are bookplate labels inside from the previous owners. They also have a slightly musty old book smell. **Save 30% if you purchase 3 or more listings. Just enter coupon code OLIVETREE30 at checkout.**

Please contact me before ordering. This is the starting price for a leather binding, custom details are an additional cost. I only work with rebinding books that are already in hardcover (i.e., I do not print books or create pdfs. I do not work with paperback editions, the book has to exist in hardcover for me to start with). Extra lettering is $3 per character. Processing time is usually 6-8 weeks. Rebinding in the traditional method using the highest quality leather strengthens any book, and makes it more beautiful. I use traditional leather binding methods with an old fashioned feel, with details including a raised band spine and handmade endpapers. I often use vintage editions when possible, and vintage medallions to adorn the covers. Please contact me before ordering to discuss details and price. Lettering is done in the old fashioned way, with a 19th c. manual letterpress, where each typeset letter is set by hand and gold leafing done by hand.
Set of five Swedish books published in the 1900's.
Lately I've been haunted by the idea of elongated books. I'm trying out new proportions, stretching, distorting, searching for the unusual. The idea came to me after seeing a book with uncommon dimensions in the collection of a friend. It was a prayer book, slender and long as it was meant to be hold in the hand. It felt really pleasant and special to have it in my hand so I instantly wanted to create one like it. A book made out of a vintage glasses case. Another, made of some very cracky old leather. And here's one I just finished. My favorite so far, and pretty unusual I'd say. This last is made of old leather from a Portuguese chair. I had only a small piece which I got from a friend and used it as it was. It has beautiful irregular edges and the circles are marks left by the nails used in upholstery. I'm going to play again with this idea for sure. Perhaps try something on horizontal, don't know yet. I like them as objects but can't help to wonder, are they practical too? I haven't tried one like this yet, so I might just go ahead and keep one for myself...
