These sculptures pay tribute to Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du Mal, a book of poetry exploring themes of decadence and eroticism. On close inspection their fine petals have a flesh-like appearance, with anthropomorphic scars and sores pitting the skin. They are reflections on the depraved state of modern, media-saturated culture and the spectre of genetic manipulation.

A painterly study of faded white tulips in black and white. Much as I love fresh flowers, there is something beautiful about dead or wilting flowers too. Maybe a little wistful but somehow poetic! They were a popular subject in the 17th century Dutch Vanitas still-life school of painting which explored these themes. Archival pigment print on smooth matt Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 gsm heavyweight art paper.

A single dead flower in a glass vase. To light this still life subject I used three speedlites. The background is a black card lit by a bare 580EX11 zoomed to 50deg. The backlight was a 580EX11 fitted with a snoot, the light just catching the petals on the top right of the flower head. The third 580EX11 in a stripbox was positioned to the left of the subject and provides the reflection on the glass. The basic post processing was done with lightroom 5 and a texture was added to the background in photoshop cc. A small amount of high pass sharpen was added and then a vignette to finish. Camera: canon eos 5D Mk 11. 160sec @ f/8.0 iso 100. Lens: canon ef 24-105mm f/4.0 @ 80mm Speedlites fired with skyport triggers.

If you’re new around here, you might be surprised to know I love Halloween. It’s nostalgic, fun, and a good excuse to play a part and decorate a room. Every year I try to do something a bit different (from curiosities, to bones, to creepy chic). In the past it’s mainly been about channeling a look, but this year I had something specific in mind: Miss Havisham from Charles Dickens Great Expectations. It was actually one of you who gave me the idea on Instagram one day, and I forgot how much I enjoyed that story. A few years ago there was a BBC adaptation on PBS, and Miss Havisham and her home were beautifully sad. As a jilted bride she decides to freeze time, keeping her home and herself looking exactly as they did the day she was left at the alter. The problem is the years have not been kind […]

Still lifes are one of the most recurrent and well-known themes in art history. Read more about their origin, types and meanings.
Japanese artist Toru Kamei creates sensual, dreamlike paintings that reference nature and mythology. While some of his pieces delve into the enchanted worlds of serpentine gods and mermen, other works offer a surrealist take on vanitas painting. Like the Northern Renaissance still lifes, Kamei's work meditates on the fragility of life and the imminence of mortality. But his work takes on a bizarre dimension when one notices the eyeballs popping out of the flowers he paints, making them look haunted and eerily alive.
