A carpenter and his apprentices were travelling through the province of Qi in search of building materials. They saw a giant tree; five men all holding hands could not encompass its girth, and its crown reached almost to the clouds.‘Let’s not waste our time with this tree,’ said the master carpenter. ‘It would take us for ever to cut it down. If we wanted to make a ship out of that heavy trunk, the ship would sink. If we tried to use it to build a roof, the walls would have to be specially reinforced.’

Today I want to talk to you about the L word... No, not the one you’re thinking of. And not the Showtime series either. Today we’re getting real about Leverage in business. (Sit tight. This one’s gooood.) I remember what it was like to be in my day job but dreaming of working for myself… It couldn’t come fast enough. I’d be in my 9-5 all day, come home, and start working on building my business. I kept all of the reasons I wanted to be an entrepreneur in the front of my mind for those moments when I was exhausted and thought about giving up: My family, time off, making a difference in the world, having unlimited income potential. You can relate, can’t you? The old way of starting a business—physically setting up shop, going out to network, and slowly building your audience one by one—doesn’t work for us anymore. We want to see results immediately, not take years to grow our businesses bit-by-bit. Now it’s all about using social media and the internet to leverage our growth. So how do you expand quickly, so you can leave your job behind? It all comes down to momentum or leverage in business. Picture your success in business like a triangle. On one side you have time, on another money, and on the last, work. If you want to create the momentum you need to succeed in a short amount of time, you have to leverage the investment or the work involved. When you move in quick “bursts” of action, your momentum allows you to get to the next level faster. I like big bursts and I cannot lie. What are my 2 favorites? 1.Big burst number one—booking yourself solid with 1:1 clients The first thing to work on if you want to exit your 9-5 is booking yourself solid with coaching clients so you have stable income. (When you sell coaching packages, you often set yourself up to receive payments from your clients every month.) How do you do this exactly? Through a pedal-to-the-metal burst of speed. For example, one of my mentors does the 100 Call Challenge, where you try to book 100 calls in a short period of time. Why does this work? You probably won’t book 100 calls, but you do so much promotion and outreach that by the time you’re done, you’re fully booked and you’ve really increased your awareness in your community. Plus, this activity has you doing follow-up and trickling outreach over the next few months. 2.Big burst number two—creating your first group program Once you’ve booked yourself solid, or have gotten close, the next momentum-maker is your first group program. That establishes you as the expert in your niche. You’re no longer just the 1:1 person...now people recognize you for your leadership and knowledge too. Plus, the win-win with launching is that whether you’re doing a Periscope challenge or a series of webinars or providing tons of educational content, you’re supporting your audience while also building your list. And, since people love sharing, you’re being exposed to larger numbers than ever! At this point, you’ve not only sold your smaller group program, but you’ve also grown your community significantly. And any remaining spots you have open for your 1:1, you can upsell to your program participants. In fact, I used this strategy with great success in my first ever group program. I made ~$10K during the launch (not too shabby), but so many of my participants signed on to work with me 1:1 or in my next group program that overall, that program + upsell brought in ~$30K for me. It’s by stacking things together like this that you’re able to use leverage in business and cash in on major momentum. Onward and upward, Luisa
