Oil and water are the perfect experiment for kids! It's so pretty it's almost mesmerizing so we decided to try this process on the light table. This post contains affiliate links. We filled a glass pie plate with baby oil. It smells great but if you have younger children you might want to try a vegetable oil. We colored water with neon food coloring and added eye droppers to work on fine motor skills. The invitation was set up on paper towels on our Alex Prism Light Center. The kids slowly dropped the colored water onto the oil to see what would happen. The colors are so pretty above the light! Light table play can be so soothing. A dark room, a quiet activity, and two kids taking turns makes for the perfect calming experience. Our daughter tried to make a flower. The colors of water would swirl and mix together when they touched. I've already promised the kids that we'll try this pretty science experiment again soon! It is sure to be a favorite for everyone. We absolutely LOVE the Kodo Kids Light Lab! This light table is magnificent! The Kodo Kids Light Lab is a round light table that is removable from it's stand and can be used on the floor too. It is LED and changes colors as well. This light table is the total package! It even comes with a beautiful removable sand tray! The Kodo Kids Light Lab also comes with a beautiful set of wireless controls with perfect kid size knobs to change the color of the light table! It even has three programmable buttons to remember three of your favorite colors. This light table is very unique in the fact that it can be both a light table that you stand or sit in a chair at, and a light table you sit on the floor to play with. Infants and young toddlers can even sit on it to play, when it is on the floor. The sand tray is a really great aspect of this light table as well. It makes sensory box play very easy! You can put dried and colored rice or pasta on the sand tray as well as any type of play sand, moon sand, kinetic sand, etc. One of my favorite features about the Kodo Kids Light Lab is that the bluest blue color acts as a black light! Check out our amazing pics below! Find the Kodo Kids light lab HERE Please be sure to check out our videos and photos below! My twins absolutely love the Kodo Kids Light Lab! It is just gorgeous! 100+ light table activities for toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarten aged kids
"A school needs to be a place for all children, not based on the idea that they are all the same, but that they are all different." -Loris Malaguzzi (founder of the first Reggio Emilia School) Reflective light has been the subject of discovery and object of fascination for the children for quite sometime. A few days ago we decided to experiment and play with sand on top of the light table. The children begun to explore the sand, perhaps attracted by the light that shined through the plexi glass… The explorations involved their entire body moving it up and down from left to right in rhythm with the sands movement. They used their palms, finger tips, elbows and different objects to move it around. The light created some dark and light shadows that altered the appearance of the sand. I had prepared baskets with glass prisms, agate slices and natural shells to be used with the sand if the children chose too. The first child used the natural seashells and discovered that when rolled on top of the sand it left beautiful soft stripes of light. His attention is fully captured; he notices the stripes of light peaking through the sand and yells out, “GUYS come here! Have you ever seen a beautiful design like this before?” The emotional reaction to the discovery of the “stripe lights” spreads across the room. Everyone loved his amazing discovery and asked him for a live demonstration. He gladly gave one with a big proud smile on his face while his admirers looked and learned. Let us not forget that children are clever and capable. Yesterday, I was reminded that I should change the color of sand in order to make it more fun. “You never know Ms. Maria; it might make the light shine more,we should experiment. Let’s use purple today and maybe green tomorrow.” It is probably one of the most powerful memories that the children and I will forever treasure. Why not simply, let go of a set curriculum and things that make us comfortable, it diminishes the excitement and wonder from each child. They have to make those discoveries in order for learning to take place. LEARNING SHOULD BE FUN!!! :)
