Happy Birthday Abe! #Lincoln #CivilWar150
I'm back with a little update! My baby turned one year old a few weekends ago. And I. Can't. Believe. It. I never really understood why moms would cry when their babies turned one. But now I get it. My baby is a toddler and it happened all so fast. In a flash we sped through breastfeeding, tummy time, burp cloths, and bottles. And now, all that is boxed up as sweet little memories of a year gone by. Shortly after we decided on the name Abraham, I came up with the idea to throw him an Abraham Lincoln themed first birthday. Sure he wasn't even born yet, but that's not too early to start planning his first birthday is it? (don't answer that) We didn't name Abe after the former president but we didn't mind making the connection with one of the greatest presidents this country has ever seen. A couple months before the big day, I came up with the invitation. And it is my favorite. I created the invite by downloading the background image and then layering a neutral backdrop on top in order for me to add the party details. I had some fun with the wording by looking at the Gettysburg Address for inspiration. I had them printed onto cardstock at staples. Then I focused on the decorations. I wanted to incorporate a patriotic, red, white, and blue theme. I also added a bit of copper to keep it from feeling like a 4th of July party. So I bought these fun red, white, and blue fans and secured a print out of a copper penny onto one of the fans. It was a super windy day so we secured them to the siding using Zots. Meijer was selling these fun political napkins and I couldn't resist. Abraham Lincoln was a part of the republican party but I did buy one package of the democratic napkins so everyone would feel represented. We used cute little baskets with red, white, and blue liners instead of paper plates. Fun! Another way I incorporated Abe Lincoln was by creating names for some of the food. For example: Abra-Hamburgers Lincoln Log Dogs Lemon-Abe We also served Corn on the cob (Abe's Ears), fruit salad, pasta salad, and chips. I had made cookies in the shape of Abe Lincoln's hat that I was planning to serve too, but I ended up running out of time to decorate them before the party. Michael suggested I set them out anyway and let people decorate their own. Major brownie points for the hubby for that idea! MAJOR! It was fun to have a little activity for people to participate in while we waited to eat. Not to mention.....cookies as appetizers = winning. After eating we opened gifts. Michael and I talked about different ideas of what we could get Abe for his birthday and we finally landed on the perfect idea. A few years ago we were given a couple of wooden Adirondack chairs that I refinished. We have them sitting out in front of our house facing the river and we really enjoy using them. So we decided to get one just Abe's size and engrave his name on it. We bought this chair on Amazon, burned his name onto the front, and stained it to match. And yes, his onesie does have a shade-wearing Abe Lincoln on it. I made the onesie using my silhouette machine and some heat transfer paper. The suspenders I found last minute at Meijer and the shorts I bought from a secondhand store. While opening gifts, we played a little trivia game. In between each gift we had a little trivia game that we played to keep the adults interested. I called it "Presidents Say What?" First prize took home Lincoln, the movie released in 2012, staring Daniel Day-Lewis (it's SO good if you haven't seen it!) and second prize was a roll of pennies. :-) And before it was smash cake time, we had to do a little photo op with our little Abe. It lasted all of 40 seconds but it was just enough time to get this picture. And finally, it was time for cake. I found this fun red, white, and blue cake mix at Meijer. This birthday party was not necessarily brought to you by Meijer... but it might as well have been. I made a two layer cake and covered it with white frosting with star spangled sprinkles on top. I made a copper "1" for the top of the cake as a nod to the penny and his first birthday. It took him a while to get into it. But he finally dove in once we gave him a fork to hold. He didn't use the fork, but he liked holding it and digging into the cake with his hands and face. The party went by in a flash, just like his first year. But we tried to enjoy every minute. We are so thankful for all the family that helped with the party and all those who came to celebrate with us. Happy Birthday Abraham Mark. We love you so much!
Can't believe our little buckaroo, Lincoln, is five! (I repeat, my BABY is 5! Oh help me Rhondas! :) Our boy plays Indian Chief, Cowboys and/or Davy Crockett almost every day... So naturally, we decided on a Cowboys and Indians party! This was a left-over piece of wood we found in the barn. I thought it made a great western-style giant letter "L" in honor of the birthday boy, Lincoln. I carried it out to the driveway as an easy way for guests to find the party. When guests arrived, they got to choose a cowboy or cowgirl hat or an indian headdress to wear for the party and to take home. We purchased this wood sawhorse from Home Depot for

Wow where did that second year go!! Its amazing how time goes so slowly when youre pregnant and when babies are young and calm in the run up to their first year. Then suddenly they explode into little bundles of energy and similarly time flies along with them... Anyway, as you would surely have realised by now figure Katherine has just turned 2. The invite perfectly summed up Katie as a "1 going on 2" year old ... a dolphin-mad, Bubboo-mad and Noddy-mad happy choppy! Of course theres no denying I loved the theme, Noddy was actually my hero as a young kid too. I still distinctly remember my Noddy bedroom and duvet set that my mother diligently sewed up for me (my how the tables have turned!) Anyway enough jibber jabber, moving onto the decorations.... Poundland kindly made this whole party feasible for me with the enormous Noddy posters they sell. I quite literally used them for everything :) First one is here at the entrance of the party venue ... Then here they are chopped up as centrepieces with brightly coloured balloons, and table cloth labels ... And the party packs were as follows ... Here are some cupcakes with the Noddy characters as rice paper toppers Not to forget the large Dolphin cake with Rainbow jelly as requested by the Birthday Girl!! The cake was modelled using Rice Crispy Treats and covered in fondant Here is how the Jelly part came out ... Here are some cakes with Noddy drawn by stencil using chocolate sprinkles And lastly my favourite .... here is the look on the birthday girls face when she saw all the decorations :)

Humpty Dumpty This was one of my entries for Cake Fest in Lafayette. It was a revamped version of my little boy's 4th birthday cake....
My little Lennon is turning 1 in a few days and I'm throwing him a lumberjack themed birthday party. We're having older kids (to include his big sister) at the party so I wanted to come up with a game to keep them busy. I searched everywhere online and I didn't find anything that was both fun and went with the party theme, so I decided to invent my own game. I made this game out of one of those tri-fold posters that are generally used for school projects. At first I was going to use a velcro method so that the axes would stick to the target once they were thrown, but I'm a little short on time since I decided at the last minute (as usual) to include a party game. Next best thing is cut a hole in the middle and have the kids aim for it. The sign was made from a cardboard poster header like this one here. Except I bought mine at Hobby Lobby for $2.99! The tri-fold poster board display is from Walmart. I think it was also around $3. I used different sized bowls to trace out the target and then I just painted the lines in. The middle was cut out with a box cutter. After I finished the target I felt like the poster still looked kind of bare, so I added a few random trees at the bottom. The little axes were SUPER quick and easy to make. The tutorial is down below after the photos and video of my daughter, Rose, testing out the finished product. She approves. DIY 'No Sew' Axes for Ax Toss Game Things you'll need: Felt Glue Gun Stuffing Rice (for added weight) Scissors I needed my axes to be kind of small, but feel free to make these larger if you are creating a baby rattle or stuffed toy instead. I rarely measure anything so most of my crafts are results from me eyeballing everything along the way. Cut out the handles for the axes. They should look like little rectangles. The length and width will vary depending on what size you want your ax to be. Hot glue along one of the longer edges then fold it over to make a tube like the two photos below. Glue one of the ends shut so you only have one opening to the handle. You will need this opening to insert the stuffing. I found it was easier to roll my stuffing into little balls and then shove it in with my scissors. Don't over stuff, but also make sure you don't stuff too little. Leave some space up top so you can hot glue the other end shut after you're done filling it up. Now for the 'blade'. Cut out 2 little rectangles in whatever size you want your blade to be. I decided to give them a little curve so that it looks more 'ax-ish'. Hot glue one of the shorter ends together so it looks like a little book. This is when you'll have to put the blade and handle together. Hot glue across the bottom edge of your 'little book'. Position the handle where you want it to be and fold the blade flap over so that you now have a sealed up bottom edge with the top of the handle glued inside. Hot glue the remaining short end shut. Now you're left with a little pocket like the photo below. Grab some stuffing and make a little bed for the rice. Fold the stuffing over so the rice is inside and won't be able to spill everywhere when you place this inside your 'blade pocket'. Once again... Don't over stuff, but make sure you still put enough in so that the ax isn't totally flat. Hot glue across the last opening and voilà! You're ax is complete. You can get little rattle sound inserts on eBay, Etsy, and Amazon. They're pretty cheap and would make an adorable addition to this ax if you were making it as a baby toy.
Another countdown has come and gone. As always, quite the ride:). How about I wrap up my part of it by sharing the remainder of my projects? Framed Out #3 and Think Big Favorites #15. There were sentiments from both of these sets that worked well together, so I combined them. Getting a little help from last month's Back Pocket Basics. Heart-2-Heart and BB: Postmarks. I felt the new Patchwork Patches die works well as a whimsical postage stamp. Worked well. Also enjoyed using my new Ocean Tides ink on this card. Tagged Sentiments. Sort of hard to tell, but I embossed the numbers "1, 3,4" using the By the Numbers dies so that it all tied in with the "2" from Dawn's new stamp set. Color combo I found on Pinterest and loved--Orange Zest, Autumn Rose, Ocean Tides, Aqua Mist, and Vintage Cream. Trendy Trees. I stamped the tree trunk with one of the mats from Modern Wood Mats. Birdies are cut out of felt. Tweet Talk. The Wine Bottle Tag got used to house my sentiment in a new way. Birdie-wise, this is a bit of a different spin on things. I was searching for inspiration and found this pillow: I thought it was a dead end because the birds from Tweet Talk don't have the smooth bodies. But than I started experimenting and I realized I could totally pull it off. Here's how: Hope you enjoyed the rest of my projects. See you around soon. Once you get the stampin mojo going, it's sort of hard to stop.
