About The Artwork My photo images are abstracted, layered, colored with paints and pastels printed on paper or canvas. I print my images on archival fine-art paper or canvas that's varnished for colorfastness. The prints have a slightly smooth texture. The image size is 16" x 20" with approx. 1/2" white border around the image. It will ship rolled in a heavy-duty tube. These impressionistic images are strongly influenced by California painters of the early and mid-20th century. Though I began photographing in the pre-digital days of black-and-white film, hiking the rolling golden hills of the Central Coast moved me to begin painting and coloring my prints. From that experience, I fell in love with color—golden rolling hills, deep summer greens, intense sky blue, soft purple and orange sunsets. My work has always communicated my love and appreciation of the landscape and the importance of wilderness for the health of the planet. And these days, it also explores the emotional impact of color on the mind and heart. About The Artwork I've photographed and documented historic live oak trees in Louisiana for more than 40 years. I the past few years, I've begun printing my B&W images on canvas and painting them. I created this black-and-white infrared photograph of a centuries-old live oak while working on a grant project for the Lafourche Parish Tourism folks - www.liveoaktour.com. It's a tour of the oldest live oaks along Bayou Lafourche in South Louisiana. I printed the B&W image on canvas and hand-painted it with oil paints. Beginning with a background base tint, I build up thin layers of color to create the image. This is 1 of a series of 5 that I plan to paint. Each will be a different interpretation of the original image. Webre Oak, Sunset, near St. Charles, LA. Because of its particular shape and abundant strands of Spanish Moss, this print is a classic image of the iconic Southern Live Oak. Quercus virginiana Did you know the first three forestry laws passed by American Congress were aimed at protecting live oak? Live oak was so valuable to America’s security that it prompted the government to take measures toward protecting it. It was widely used in shipbuilding. But when a secretary of the navy discovered that almost half the live oaks from southern coastal lands were gone —much of it exported to foreign nations —it prompted president John Adams to persuade congress to establish a plantation to grow future crops. The Naval Appropriations Act of 1828 allowed the navy to maintain oak forests for their exclusive use. A lot can be said about a tree so beloved it inspired the administration to preserve it. Once metal began to replace wood in shipbuilding, the live oak transitioned from a staple in vessels to a shade tree, and with good reason. The tree’s branches spread nearly twice the distance of its height and form rounded canopies, making it ideal in the heat of the south. What’s in a Name? The live oak earned its common name because it is one of a few broad-leaf trees that retains its green foliage year-round, similar to an evergreen. Other […]
