About The Artwork As I write this, my studio smells of old hyacinths, a faint sweet cloying fragrance. It's similar to, but not the same as, the fresh sweetness of chrysanthemums, which for me always evokes flower shops and the Rose Parade of my childhood. We watched it on TV every New Years Day, and then visited the floats on January 2nd, which was my father's birthday. My neighbour doesn't like the smell of chrysanthemums; they remind her of funerals. Each to their own. There are people who know the mythology of flowers, the charming stories woven by various cultures around the world; but I find the organic physical touchy smelly actual things far more magical than any magical thinking could describe. Looking closely – and the camera allows me to look more closely than my naked eye ever could – I see whole worlds of colour and form. I see graceful arcs and grasping tendrils, insects and insect damage; sometimes they are caught in the very act of fertilization, spilling pollen, shameless. They've got it, and they flaunt it. I see life, always on the move, intricately patterned and always surprising. Dandelions, like snowflakes, no two the same. And at the level where no two are the same, everything becomes a who rather than a what. Every one of my models ends up on the compost heap, though some have an extended retirement in a vase; hence the living room perfumed with old hyacinths, long since plundered for an image of colour and form, now drooping limply over the side of the ceramic pot, but still singing their sweet pong.
