So many of the social life's aspects have changed for women in the years. Starting with the right for education and ending with gender equality - all of this didn't happen overnight, and many badass women had to sacrifice their personal lives for a greater cause. Women's Equality Day celebrated on August 26th in the US, commemorates the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, granting women the right to vote. It was certified in 1920, despite being introduced many years earlier in 1878, and since 1972, every president has published a proclamation for Women's Equality Day. Only because of the strong women in history we have reached this point in our society.

I finished this project back in late July, but right afterwards life geared back up again for school. This afternoon I find myself with some free time, so here are the last of the construction photos and some of the finished product. Finishing the Wig Bonnie Figured out that we needed support for the side rolls Like this! hair wrapped around the rolls Finished with comb, veil, and flowers adding lace to the vaeil I had to cut the lace in parts to handle the curves Lace attached to the wig/comb I had to construct it in two pieces: one sewn directly to the wig, and the other sewn to the comb attaching the underveil to the wig Sleeves I made a test version of the sleeves. The sleeves were just a rectangle of fabric cartridge pleated at the upper edge and gathered at the elbow. I supported the pleating with a strip of batting. Cartridge pleats marked & stitched I trimmed the bottom edge of the pleats with some braided trim and added some leftover lace to the gathered elbow. finished bodice! helper cat Everything together on the dressform Accessories The gloves were a thrift store find. I sewed some trim from my grandmother's stash around the cuff. After doing some quick research on period shoes, I decided that ballet flats would be a close analog. I did take the sparkly bows off, though. FINISHED! I won best recreation at the Shore Leave 35 Costume Contest. It was the first contest I'd ever entered y myself. It was pretty great. The response to the costume was unexpectedly positive. Many women were thrilled to see Ada there to represent for female programmers.
This month I reread one of my all-time favorite books (and likely my favorite young adult/children's book of all time). Emily of Deep Valley, a book by Maud Hart Lovelace, is an easy read, though full of depth and noble character. (May I just suggest you get a copy of this for yourself and then share it with a few teens? Though it is one of my favorite books, I lend my copy willingly because I want others to meet Emily! This surprises me because sometimes I like to keep special things to myself.) We meet Emily Webster just as she is graduating from high school. Unlike her friends, she is sorry to see it end because it means the end of her schooling and her future seems empty without college. Though she is a very ambitious girl, she will remain with her elderly grandfather to care for him, just as he has done since she was orphaned at a young age. Emily loves her grandfather, and does not feel caring for him is an obligation. She wants to do it from the tender love within her. However, once her friends leave Deep Valley for college, depression sets in. She knows she needs to fight it. She struggles with her own desires (which many would declare are her "right" to an education as Carrie discussed in her review of this book), but she puts family first, sacrificially and without complaining. Before long, Emily finds that keeping busy helps her. She signs up for dancing classes and seeks out assistance to begin a book club. Soon, Emily and her grandfather befriend the Syrian neighbors who are often tormented and hassled-or just ignored- by the folks of Deep Valley. As she gets to know the children, she is welcomed into their homes and soon meets their families. In time, she seeks out some friends who might help the Syrians in practical ways such as teaching English and history. Emily learns that education does not need an institution. Nor does she need to go to the city to have her own Hull House, like Jane Adams. She grows a great deal right in Deep Valley and helps others in meaningful ways. Emily is a character I would have been friends with...in high school or as an adult. She is thoughtful and witty. She has a great mind and shows it, though among friends she often lets them do all the talking. Emily considers others before herself. Isn't she the way we often want to be? In addition to the noble character of Emily, the reader embraces the history within the book. Decoration Day (now called Memorial Day) was a time to honor soldiers, and the town of Deep Valley, and the individuals within it, did so with passion and zeal. Emily's grandfather added to the richness of the book...not only as a character but in how Emily treated him and how all his generation were respected and honored. Maud Hart Lovelace showed great foresight in 1950 as she wrote about racism and depression (though it was not called by name) in Emily of Deep Valley. These heavy topics still make for a delightful read as we see how Emily overcomes difficult situations. Like the Betsy-Tacy Series, the Deep Valley Books (including this one) are based on real events and people. The newer editions (published by Harper Perennial Modern Classics) provide wonderful additional information for the reader about the real people. Emily is based upon the life of Marguerite Marsh. Thank you Marguerite for befriending many and for Maud who chose to share her story! If you have a younger child, be sure to explore the Betsy-Tacy series. Integrate coding in your classroom with an Unplugged Coding Women's History Month STEM Activity! Ada Lovelace and The Thinking Machine Coding Challenge is a fun and unique way to engage your students during Women's History Month. Teach students that anyone can be a scientist regardless of gender. Ada Lovelace created a system that influenced modern day coding! Students begin the activity by reading about Ada Lovelace. We included our own mini reading passage, and you can also use Ada Lovelace and The Thinking Machine by Laurie Wallmark or Who Says Women Can't Be Computer Programmers by Tanya Lee Stone. Students work together to create different codes to lead Ada to collect different types of technology that use coding. Every activity and solution is unique as students create their own board and code by moving the start point, objects that use computer programming, and end points on their coding sheets. After they have completed their activity, there is time for reflection on what worked and what didn't. This activity is completely unplugged, and no robots are required. Amazing resource for STEM club, coding club, STEM teachers, technology teachers, elementary librarians, parents who love hands-on learning, and elementary teachers who want to create a hands-on educational environment in their classroom! Perfect activity for Hour of Code. NYC Blog - The Lovelace: one of the nights, I met with Ana for a drink at Lovelace. It was a busy night, but we were told that if we didn’t mind sharing, they could fit us in at a large table in the corner. We didn’t mind. They had oyster happy hour so we ordered a dozen, because 1$ oysters are one of the things that I just can't resist. Happy hour oysters are often really small and hard to distinguish from the brine,
