Who hasn't fallen under the spell of the Southern Antebellum home? This elegant style is actually named for a time period, not a design. The word Antebellum comes from the Latin "before war" and this architecture is named for the thirty to forty years before the American civil war from 1820 to 1860. The actual architecture falls into Greek Revival, Classical Revival, or Federal with grand, symmetrical, and boxy homes with center entrances in the front and rear, balconies, and columns or pillars. The style is an eclectic mix of French, Spanish, African, Native American, West Indian, Creole, tropical, romantic, rustic, classical..... the list goes on. Antebellum architecture was most heavily influenced by the Neoclassical style that had been gaining popularity in contemporary Europe. Neoclassicism aimed to replicate the style of the ancient Greeks and Romans and, as such, featured classical-style columns that surrounded the main structure. It's important to remember that the Antebellum style was developed to create the impression that the Old South was as cultured and dignified as the Old World, and co-opting European building trends was an integral part of this attempt. Text from article that appeared in the 26 August 2010 edition of Luxist magazine: Title: Of Restoration And Renovation: The Gaillard-Bennett Home, ca.1800, Charleston, SC, Estate of the Day--- by Susan Kime (RSS feed) Aug 26th 2010 One of the most historic homes in Charleston, South Carolina is the Gaillard-Bennett House on 60 Montagu Street. It was built in 1800 by Theodore Gaillard, a successful trades person. It is in the heart of downtown Charleston's historic district, and is the end product of a massive four year, multi-million dollar restoration. It is for sale for $13M, the second highest real estate listing ever recorded for Charleston Peninsula. It is a 10,000 square foot home, with five bedrooms, 5 baths and 2 half-baths. It also has a 3000 square foot kitchen house, a 2000 square foot carriage house, as well as a pool house, pool, tack house, and and multiple garages. Set on one and one quarter acres, surrounded by a stuccoed privacy wall, it is one of Charleston's most elaborately embellished Federal mansions. The main house is a two and one half stories, with a front porch and two side decorative porches, each with a pagoda roof. The pool and gazebo overlook the home's garden: one of the largest in the city. The main house has approximately 10,000 square feet. The Historic Charleston Foundation holds the Preservation Easement. This restoration was coordinated by the preservation contractor, Richard ( Moby) Marks, of Richard Marks Restorations, Inc. He has worked on over 50 restoration projects in the Charleston area, and is a trustee of the Historic Charleston Foundation. The restorations were designed by the architect Glenn Keyes. In a recent interview, he said that the Gaillard-Bennett house was one of the great Federal homes in Charleston, and attributes much of this greatness to the carved and composition ornament mantels, unrivalled in the area. Both Keyes and Marks worked with a team of restoration specialists and designers, including David Hueske, a master plasterer, educated in art conservation and restoration; Monty Hinson, restoration craftsman, and Sheila Wertimer, landscape architect. The team worked from historic photographs and old sketches to restore the main dwelling, buildings and grounds. Mr. Hueske commented: One of the most remarkable characteristics of 60 Montagu Street is the Adamesque decorative plasterwork. The number of individual pieces alone is impressive: about 7000 elements in each room, including ceiling medallions, and decorative images over mantels. The intricacy of his work ( see related photos) alone accounts for two of the four years it took him [David Hueske] to complete these elements in the home. This home, as of August 2010, was listed and was referred to Luxist by Lane and Smythe Realtors, Charleston. A Day Tripper's Guide to Charleston's Beaches and Islands
St. Philip St., Charleston, S.C. Can it be Monday already? The best weekends slip away too fast and this was a perfect one. Everyone was out enjoying the sunshine. Marion Square was filled with students laying on the grass enjoying the nice weather. I finally got inside the renovated Dock St. theater to see Blue on Sunday afternoon (thanks Debby!) and then ended the weekend with good friends at the best table in the house at McCrady's. My friend Andre' recently retired as General Manager so it was like old home week and we were treated like royalty. Royalty at McCrady's gets treated pretty well! Yum. This evening's photo is a Before & After scene on St. Philip St. For a long time there was a facade barely propped up. Now, suddenly there is a whole new house there.
