In the 18 years I’ve been teaching, I’ve tried all sorts of behavior management systems. I’ve had the kids pull cards. I’ve tried the marbles in a jar. One year I even gave my students tickets for good behavior and excellent participation. Another year, I awarded table points. I’ve even used an economy system where my kiddos earned money and then spent it all in a class store buying trinkets. I was always looking for that PERFECT SYSTEM! The one that would work like a charm with every single child. After years of research in my own classroom, you know what I finally discovered? I’ve finally realized that THE PERFECT CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT SYSTEM DOES NOT EXIST!!!!! What works one year and with one group of students, might not work the following. Another thing I’ve learned is that you need to find a system that WORKS.FOR.YOU. If you don’t have much time left at the end of the week to run a class store, then do it! Be honest with yourself and how much time you’re willing to invest. It’s important to choose a system that fits with your teaching style and with the needs of your students. […]

So many of us have a fantasy of living in Paris. Perhaps we envision a small pied-a-terre that we could visit a few times a year, and pretend to be Parisian. We would go to the markets and buy the most beautiful food, and prepare perfect little French meals in our tiny city kitchen. I have had so many small kitchens in many rented apartments. Yet I always enjoyed cooking, and often turned out large meals for dinner parties, and brunches. A small kitchen was never daunting. It was just a way of life. A few months ago, I stumbled on a gem of a cooking show called "The Little Paris Kitchen". It was charm at first sight. A young woman from the UK was showing classic simple French food prepared in her teeny-tiny kitchen. There were scenes of her shopping in those very markets of my dreams. Rachel Khoo shopping for food in Paris Rachel Khoo in her little Paris kitchen A Spanish style tile back splash will give you the look The tiles could be from Mexico The tiles could be from Morocco or Portugal I did some research on the girl, who is Rachel Khoo. The TV show was an off-shoot of cook book she was writing called "The Little Paris Kitchen". So she tested recipes, for diners who paid to have dinner in "the smallest restaurant in Paris", which was her apartment. The BBC filmed a half donzen shows of that experience. The Little Paris Kitchen Rachel's oven looks like a toy I love this cook book, The Little Paris Kitchen now available in the USA Rachel calls herself a "food creative", which entails cooking, writing, TV, event planning, styling, branding - anything creative to do with food. Her cook book just came out in the USA this past month, and I got it, and I love it, and yes, I have made a few things from it. The lavender chicken rocks. Not only am I charmed by her food, I am charmed by the idea of a small picturesque yet functional kitchen. This month at Houzz, I did my Guest Picks based on Rachel Khoo's little Paris kitchen. I tell you where to find decorative things that you could use to create her look, and functional cooking equipment that every French cook has. Kerry McCaffety is a fixture when it comes to writing and photographing beautiful books about New Orleans. New Orleans New Elegance is her ninth book. It is one to have and hold. There are images of designers work that has never been seen before, and also many images of the interior design work of our old favorites. What's new from the old is the pale palette that has replaced the moonlight and magnolias style of overwrought red bordello rooms once associated with New Orleans. Pale rooms have had a foothold here for the past ten years in the Uptown homes that once dripped with ornate window treatments, Tester beds, and Victorian parlor sets. The establishment designers of New Orleans are well represented: Gerrie Bremermann. Holden and Dupuy. John Cherstia, Melissa Rufty, Allain Bush, Karina Gentinetta, John Vaccari, Kevin Gillentine, and many others. More than forty houses and apartments are featured from all parts of the city—the French Quarter, the Warehouse District, the Garden District, and the multiple neighborhoods that comprise Uptown. The two fabulous "reeds" and style doyennes weigh in: Julia Reed with the introduction (which I can't wait to read), and a witty promo blurb from Mimi Read. I beg to differ about the well spring that New Orleans drinks from not being influenced and sometimes copied, by not only influences in New York and Los Angeles, but by influences from Paris, Spain, Italy, Germany, Ireland, Haiti (Saint Domingue back in the day) Africa, and everywhere else for that matter. This is a port city of immigrants who brought their traditions that have formed the unique style that makes New Orleans so different and special - New Orleans is once again a fashionable place (it was a fashion trend setter in the early 1800's copying the latest styles from Paris) that follows and copies fashion from everywhere, especially now after Katrina with an influx of young transplants, new talent choosing to make it their home and being a part of the rebirth and rebuilding - Their energy has decidedly changed and updated the style of New Orleans in interior design and decor, and fashion, bringing it into the 21st century with a trend setting verve Here are some of the very fashionable homes featured in New Orleans New Elegance. There is a great album on Kerri's web site that I am sure will excite all you bloggers and Pinterest folks, and encourage you all to buy this book. I remember my childhood as a series of moving house. My parents were renters, until they retired to a lakeside camp where they owned a home fashioned from combining a collection of odd outbuildings. I remember at least six homes we lived in. I went to a different high school for each of the four years until graduation. As an adult I had several apartments in New York. I can think of seven of them, and four summer rentals before I bought (and since sold) a summer home. Since I left New York, I have lived in four different homes, the fourth being the present one. I like to think that this present house is our forever house. But you never know. Of course Mother Nature could take it away (hurricanes). Perhaps hard times would force us to sell. But if nothing drastic happens, this could be our forever house. I often joke that if money were no object, I could own one last great house, maybe a center hall house, or a townhouse (with parking) in the French Quarter. Recently I did a post about Julia Reed's house being for sale. It seemed like her forever house as she wrote so lovingly about it in her book The House on First Street. Everyone asks me why she is selling, and really I don't know, and can only hope that is a decision she made in order to move onto something good. Tricia Guild has been inspiring me lately I have been on Tricia Guild visual journey for the past few weeks, exploring her body of work through images. In my research I see she is selling her vacation home in Tuscany, a house she has owned for over 20 years. It seemed like a forever house if ever there was one. For sale in Tuscany - could it be your forever house? Tricia Guild's living room in Tuscany The house has gotten plenty of press Blue bedroom in Tricia Guild's Tuscan home Another blue bedroom This photo was in an article about Tricia Guild's Tuscan home, but clearly it is not a room in that house This is another gorgeous Tricia Guild room Loving the ombre Tricia Guild did in this room More press for the villa in a Greek decor magazine A guest room in the the Tuscan villa of Tricia Guild The dining room in Tricia Guild's Tuscan villa A pretty pink sitting room in Tricia Guild's Tuscan Villa The kitchen in the villa of Tricia Guild Love the citron After twenty something years Tricia Guild is leaving her Tuscan villa For sale HERE Is the concept of a forever house a thing of the past? There are starter homes. Then there are larger homes to accommodate a larger family. And then there's the senior downsizing. And maybe that can change too if good health goes out the window. Here in New Orleans, generations of families live in the same house over the years. Kids grow up and move into their own homes, but mom and pops stay put, and the house is often a legacy that goes back to the kids who tend to keep the house in the family. Hurricane Katrina wiped out many of those forever homes. A sweet townhouse in the French Quarter for sale HERE So, do you live in your forever house? Hover over any image to Pin it. The streets of New York City are like a fashion runway. Certain stylish people are spotted over and over again, becoming known for their great style. Ari Seth Cohen started an amazing blog a couple of years ago were he focused on taking street fashion pictures and interviewing fashion mavens from age 60 and up. He called it Advanced Style. Artist and life coach Debra Rapoport is a regular fixture on the-streets-as-runway in New York, and she has been featured many times on Advanced Style. I was very attracted to her one-of-a-kind style, and her life philosophy. So when House of Fifty tapped me for a column about the correlation between fashion and home decor, I thought of Debra. The fabulous bohemian decor of Debra Rapoport - photo by Ryan Mellinger, styling Maria McBride Debra is like so many New Yorkers, living in the same compact apartment for over 30 years. Her fabulous fashion sense spills over into her home decor, creating a colorful bohemian space. I wanted to fly to New York to see her apartment, photograph it, and interview her. In a perfect world this would have been possible. But in these budget conscious days, road trips are not happening. Debra Rapoport is featured in House of Fifty in the column Advanced Decor - photo Ryan Mellinger So I tapped my friend and colleague Maria McBride who lives in New York, and is an extraordinary editor, author, and stylist, to help me out. She and her daughter, the photographer Ryan Mellinger set up a photo shoot with Debra, and made some beautiful pictures. Debra and I connected, and the result is my Advanced Decor column in the Fall 2012 issue of House of Fifty (starting on page 90). Please take a look and read the article. Debra is a very interesting woman, and her outlook on life is wonderful. I love big coffee table books, especially the ones about interiors and decorating. It seems there is a healthy and thriving publishing industry that revolves around such books. Dozens of new titles are released every year, and they seem to be selling. A big book with beautiful photos just cannot be experienced on the computer screen. I especially love a big beautiful book that is also well written and has a story to tell. So I am happy to tell you about Heirloom Modern by Hollister and Porter Hovey. A portrait of the Hovey sisters' glam grandmother from the book Heirloom Modern - photo by Parker Hovey The Hovey sisters in their loft in Williamsburg Let's back up a bit to 2008 when I first started my blog. There were a handful of exotic bloggers, the in girls and it boys who everyone swooned over. The "J'dore" cult following emerged. One such blog beloved by many was called (and still is) Hollister Hovey. I always thought the whole loft was painted black, but it was just one great big accent wall I think I can say that Hollister and Parker Hovey started the whole black wall (and decorating with taxidermy) craze for bloggers, that has now trickled down to decorators everywhere to this very day. Black walls were not thought of as chic or in the comfort zone of most people. Rebellious teenagers and rock and roll types painted their walls black. Funnily, that famous black accent wall in their loft is no more. They recently painted it white HERE! The walls are white now Hollister and her sister Parker live in a windowless loft in Willamsburg in Brooklyn in New York. They rode the wave of the hipster movement that totally changed a once discarded neighborhood, that morphed into a pretty fabulous "see and be seen" scene. One of their favorite pieces of taxidermy Mismatched toy soldiers form a unique army Militaria form one of their many collections Love the Lucite chair In the home of their aunt I like many am fascinated by the Hovey sisters. Talented and quirky, they capture attention. They are two young stylish women who love to collect extraordinary vintage objects. They seem to have a full, fun, creative. and vivid social life, and Parker even snagged a cameo on Mad Men. The London home of Alexa Romanoff is in the book Now they have their first book out, Heirloom Modern (published by Rizzoli), and it is simply wonderful. At first glance, I thought how can a book basically filled with vignettes of quirky collections be so captivating. But then I started to read it, and I could not stop. It is pure magic. Add this book to your collection After all, it is really the back stories about the things we choose to live with, and how we put them together that makes interior design and decoration become a living thing, and not just a dry husk of attractive rooms strung together for imaginary photo shoots for imaginary magazines. The Hoveys have a rich family history, filled with artistic, creative, talented, and quirky types. And they have acquired alot of their stuff from family collections. I am especially drawn to their stories. I'm sharing a number of photos from the book to whet your appetite for the stories behind the objects and collections. Plus I love the photography of Parker Hovey. I am a rootless creature. My family history is sketchy and unknown. I live in the present. I create my own history that lives on only as long as I do. I am not boo-hooing. But at times there is a certain longing for a connection to a past before I was born that formed me. I can become lonely and melancholy in longing for ancestors. On the other hand, I have a tremendous freedom, being able to create a family of Alberto, friends, and siblings. Ralph Lauren created an industry providing a modern heirloom lifestyle for people like me. My grandmother was only alive for my childhood, too soon for me to delve into genealogy with her. But I did come away from her with a love for vintage and old things, and for many years my grandmother's clothes and memories of her house formed my sense of style both in home decorating and fashion. So I really appreciate the Hovey sisters. Get their book and be inspired. There are of course gorgeous images of their home, and also those of friends and family: "Homes filled with objects bought, bequeathed, beloved, and worth handing down". After you read this book, you will embrace your own stuff and glory in the layered beauty of its artful clutter. I heart the Hovey sisters The Hovey sisters are thriving. Besides the book, and lots of press over the years, they also have a wallpaper at Anthropologie that can instantly give you a little of their wit in your own space. They also have an interior design firm now, Hovey Design. Do you treasure your auntie or granny's or parent's stuff? Do you decorate with it? To my sisters and brothers, and nieces and nephews, please don't throw away all my stuff after I am gone. Perhaps it can help start a family history longer than a New York minute. All photos (except for the second and third, and the last one) by Parker Hovey from the book Heirloom Modern by Holister Hovey. Hover over any image to Pin it. By now you must know that that the color of the year for 2014 is Radiant Orchid. It's a purple pink color that one might associate with a nursery or a tween room. Could it be sophisticated enough in rooms for adults? Orchid chairs, lampshades on the mantel, and rug pair well with green walls in this pretty trad adult room - The nuance in the stripe slipcovers make it work I think it could. Like any strong color, if you love it you can use it liberally. If it's not your favorite, you can add a dollop or two to freshen up a room for now. After all, another color of the year will always come along. This layered room uses shades of orchid - wallpaper, chairs, paint on ceiling, and rug Orchid wallpaper is a great way to update the entry hall - and you could just do one wall - or you could just pop in a peony posy on your entry hall table or chest The bedroom is a perfect place for orchid walls and bedding Here's the thought bubble from runway to home decor - Adding art work in hues of orchid is certainly a way to go Paint is the easiest way to update a room - I love these bookcases painted orchid - See how it pairs well with blue Love the orchid painted bookcases, but maybe you could just recover a couple of stools instead This pale neutral room takes a dollop of orchid very well Go big or go home! I tell you where to get an orchid color couch and rugs at Houzz Throws and pillows are the easy and fast ways to add orchid Mixing all shades of purple and pink of the same hue and value read as orchid Adding an orchid area rug will update your room instantly Orange pairs well with orchid - Mmmmm I have orange chairs in my living room This month on Houzz, I chose some things you can buy in the color of the year to add to your decor. While some are a direct color match, others are a liberal interpretation in the purple-pink range. Check out my post at Houzz for all the great orchid things I found for you So what do you think? Will you use it? You can just add an orchid plant and be done with it!
