LAS FRONTERAS DEL MIEDO Poco se prodiga en el pulp de por estos lares el relato de terror. Salvo honrosas excepciones, apenas se le dedican colecciones, al revés de lo que sucedía en América en los gloriosos años treinta y cuarenta. Aquí ni le gustaba un pimiento a la censura, siempre desconfiada hacia lo fantástico, ni a los editores, temerosos precisamente de incurrir en las iras de ésta. Que el público no lo apreciase es asunto más dudoso, viendo cuánto se acercaban a él algunos títulos que no pertenecían al género... El policial, prolífico como pocos en el pulp hispano, bordea en nuemrosas ocasiones el género de miedo. Por lo menos, gusta de jugar con su iconografía, y si lo hace tan a menudo es de suponer que fuera porque el lector sabía agradecerlo. Vean qué maravillosa muestra traigo de lo que les digo. Un Hombre Simio Gigante, que aparece en la novela de Stanislas Steeman, toma rasgos licantrópicos de la mano del portadista Femenía Jr.; Sidney Horler, pálido imitador de los delirios goticistas de Edgar Wallace, suele traer a colación falsos vampiros, monstruos, castillos encantados; lo mismo que el absolutamente desconocido George Buenchico y sus encapuchados de opereta. Harina de otro costal éste genuino cien por cien, es la edición del clásico de terror y gangsters Arde, bruja, arde del que hace infinidad ya les hablé AQUÍ. Tan queridos décadas más tarde, los psicópatas no contaban entonces como ahora con la preferencia del público. En El paraíso del monstruo, uno de ellos se pone al servicio de un químico que se hace rico extrayendo los distintos fluídos de cadáveres humanos y comerciando al mayor con ellos; asunto distinto del que ocupa al asesino de Austin Warren: cualquiera que se vista de arlequín para acuchillar a la gente es sin duda alguna un temible perturbado... Tanto por lo menos como el bilioso sujeto de Los crímenes de Deck, asesino de mujeres en la mejor tradición del género, turbio y demente como está mandado... La ciencia es lugar común en una literatura saturada, por fortuna, de sabios locos y chiflados profesores. El erlenmeyer y la probeta como símbolos de amenaza mortal, como bien ejemplefica la hermosa cubierta de El laboratorio de los crímenes; lo mismo que la jeringa, que en manos de un señor de bata blanca y prominente dentadura como el Doctor Funk no puede significar más que la muerte. No otra cosa es la que ocupa a los científicos que sintetizan el Óxido Verde. ¿Por qué sino iban a trabajar ornados con tan espléndidas máscaras de gas? Lo exótico es sinónimo de desconocido, y esto, como ocurría con la ciencia, no puede presagiar nada bueno. Las razas amarillas, cobrizas, negras, no tienen en la cabeza más que la perdición del hombre blanco. Bien lo sabe el émulo de Fu Manchú que aparece en Los jugadores de Mah Jong, o el hechicero de un islote polinesio que desde su exilio planifica y ejecuta los crímenes que firma por medio mundo con una pequeña Calavera de Oro. Y qué decir de una máscara con semejantes dientes y ojos: nadie en su sano juicio querría junto a él a semejante adefesio: siniestro ha de ser su propósito, sin duda, que la religiones extrañas no son sino cultos diabólicos disfrazados. Como el que lleva a Sexton Blake a la Isla del Horror, a enfrentarse con sacerdotisas que gustan de la serpiente como animal de compañía y de zombies medio muertos medio vivos como servidores ideales, de los que nunca rechistan... Una estética sugerente a más no poder que hace reflexionar sobre el atractivo de lo feo, el gusto de las masas, la iconografía de un género impostando a otro, la fecundidad de los autores de pulp, el trasvase entre distintos medios, la fuerza expresiva de unos dibujantes en los que hasta la falta de habilidad constituye virtud, las fronteras del kitsch, las raíces del mal gusto, los miedos de Occidente y diez mil temas más nacidos al socaire de estas portadas, contundentes como puñetazos, hipnóticas como pocas, perfectas como resumen del convulso y bello siglo XX...
