Foundation, plus its team of other complexion perfectors– concealer, contour & blush– all hold a special place in our vanity! Whether you can’t live without an everyday flawless full coverage, you opt for a light touch of tinted moisture, or even if you know nothing about this magical complexion-perfecting tool, it’s key to understand what exactly is in the products that you’re using. Unfortunately, conventional foundations from brands you most likely know and possibly love, are chock full of harmful ingredients and toxic chemicals that can negatively impact your health. Right up there next to skincare, foundations cover such a large portion of the skin on our face. As our skin is the largest organ in the body & its porous nature absorbs everything that is applied onto it, right into the bloodstream making its way into our system & effecting everything down to our hormones. Our hormones regulate almost every function of the body from our metabolism to our emotions & stress levels. Toxins found in foundations have been linked to the development of cancers, fertility issues & other conditions such as asthma, eczema or dermatitis (1). WHAT INGREDIENTS TO AVOID: Did you know there are more than 1,300 chemicals banned for use in the cosmetics industry in Europe? In the United States, only 11 are banned…yes, 11! This eye opening piece of information lets us know that many brands are utilizing harmful ingredients that aren't required to be included in the list of ingredients. So while you can comb the back of your products to spot these harmful toxins, it’s important to note that there are often additional toxins & chemicals hidden within certain ingredients. PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl): These are human produced chemicals that are utilized in not only foundations but moisturizers, cleansers, eye shadows, lipsticks and essentially any beauty product that goes on smooth. Their purpose is to do just that, spread onto the skin with ease, making it appear glossy & increasing it’s durability & wearability. These chemicals have been linked to damage of the immune system, reproductive harm & cancer. Talc: Talc is a soft known magnesium silicate mineral that is used as an absorbent and skin protecting agent in cosmetics. It’s used in foundations, cream products & lip sticks for it’s silky texture & ability to absorb oil. However, Talc is often sourced from dirty, contaminated sources. Talc, depending on its origin, can be considered carcinogenic. Not only do you run the risk of developing possible Cancer when using contaminated forms of Talc, you may also experience respiratory and skin irritations. Formaldehyde: A common ingredient used in conventional cosmetics to preserve their shelf life. According to the FDA, almost 1 in 5 beauty products contain a substance that generates formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen. Unfortunately, detecting formaldehyde in products is almost impossible unless you know the keywords to look out for. Parabens: Parabens are some of the worst offenders found in conventional makeup products today, but be careful when looking out for them as they can be disguised in a variety of ways. The most important thing to look out for here is any ingredient ending with “paraben”. This can look like Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, etc. Parabens are harsh preservatives that come with so many risks, you never want to use any product that contains them. Parabens mimic estrogen which leads to endocrine and hormone disruption and they are also known to be carcinogenic, found in breast cancer tumors frequently. Because Parabens can cause a hormone imbalance, this can lead to increased breakouts as well. BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene): This synthetic preservative is used in a variety of beauty products to mask unpleasant odors and maintain shelf-life. While BHT is known to cause skin irritations and redness, it also comes with larger risks like possible endocrine disruption and tumor promotion. While this information is overwhelming and can appear to be frightening, that is not our intention! Knowledge is power & awareness is key… it is actually the reason Citrine was born. Why did I switch over to non-toxic, clean beauty? I got slammed with my autoimmune diagnosis and after desperately researching for anything that could help ease the massive load of stressors on and symptoms of my body, I dismayingly realized just how INSANELY toxic some of these ingredients in the
Good evening everyone! After the last few weeks of constant haul posts, we’re getting back to normal now with a good old empties post and as usual its product heavy! Bodycare Lush Snow Fairy Shower Gel 500g I bought this in the Lush Boxing Day sale and I only finished it this week, how bad is that! I have a full review here but in short it’s my favourite Lush scent and I stock up every Christmas – though I do also have 2 minis to get through before this Christmas! So long-lasting, a little goes a long way and it makes my skin feel so soft, definite repurchase! Soap and Glory Calm One Calm All Bubble Bath This is my favourite liquid bubble bath and I find it gives a good amount of bubbles and a lovely relaxing scent. It leaves my skin feeling softer than usual when I have a bath with this and it’s a definite repurchase! Soap and Glory Up-Toned Girl Firming Body Lotion I bought this towards the beginning of this year as I was bridesmaid and had capped sleeves so wanted a little extra help for my arms! I really liked this, I’m not sure how much products that claim to firm and tone really do and sometimes think they may have a placebo effect but this was really softening and helped with the bumps I sometimes get on the back of my arms. It has quite a citrusy scent which wasn’t my favourite but I would repurchase this again! Grown Alchemist Mandarin and Rosemary Leaf Body Cream I got this in the Space NK sale a few months ago and I absolutely loved it! It has a really subtle citrus scent, sank into my skin really quickly and was very moisturising! I really like the packaging and loved that I got to use my wringer to get the last of it out! Would repurchase only in the sale though as it’s quite expensive at £18 full price and I've had other body lotions last me a lot longer! Grown Alchemist Vanilla and Orange Peel Hand Cream Another Grown Alchemist product, this time from a mini amenity kit but another product I really liked! Similar to the body cream this has a light citrus scent, it absorbed into my hands super quickly and it made them feel so soft! I think this size is £9 if bought separately so still a little on the expensive size but definitely one I would repurchase if I had a money off code because its one of the best hand creams I’ve tried! Lush Dream Cream Hand and Body Lotion I think this is a cult favourite from Lush from what I can gather! I went through it very quickly as it’s such a small pot but it’s not something I would repurchase. I didn’t mind the runny texture but found the scent a little bland although I can see why people with more sensitive skin than me would like it! Skincare Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser I remember having a mini version of this before and giving it a hard time in an old empties post because it didn’t last me very long. Well the opposite is true for this full size! It lasted an age, has a really refreshing scent, is super creamy and does a brilliant job of removing my make up! Definite repurchase once I’ve used up a few others I have in my stash. Aurelia Miracle Cleanser Another gorgeous cleanser and one that has featured before! I find this scent and texture very similar to the Liz Earle one but this is maybe a little creamier. It’s also a lot more expensive so not one I would repurchase even though I do love it! It pops up quite regularly in beauty boxes and this size is perfect for travelling! Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentrate This is one of those hyped do it all products and one I really did like! It’s a little more on the expensive side but a little goes a long way and it works well as a daytime moisturiser/primer for me! I probably won’t repurchase just yet as I’m trying to work my way through my stash but it’s one I would get again in the future! REN Vita Mineral Daily Supplement Moisturising Cream Another moisturiser and I found this one to be a little too rich for me for daily use and it took a little longer than I usually like to dry down before applying my makeup. I have oily/combination skin so I can see people with normal skin loving this! Wouldn’t repurchase! NIOD Copper Amino Isolate Serum 1% Where do I start with this one! Another hyped product and an expensive one too! This little dropper bottle is £38 and was worth every penny! As with all Deciem products there is a ton of science behind it but simply put this serum is meant to maintain healthy looking skin and target all forms of skin aging including texture, uneven skin tone, enlarged pores and lack of radiance. It comes with two glass bottles – one you pour into the other to activate the product and the product itself is a blue watery liquid dispensed from a dropper. I loved this; it sank into my skin so quickly and made my skin feel so smooth and like it says – healthy. I felt like I don’t break out as much when I was using this regularly, my skin looked more even and just better! This is on my Christmas list! Starskin Foam Peeling Perfection Puff This was a funny little product, I got it in a beauty box and it’s a reusable puff (up to 3x) that you put a few drops of water on then it foams up. It claims to smooth skin texture, deep clean, even skin tone and boost radiance and I really like the results after the first use! Because its reusable I left it in the packet on the windowsill but kept forgetting about it so when I went to use it again it disintegrated very quickly and didn’t do as good a job so it’s not something would repurchase! WOW Luxury Facial Mask Treatment This was my first foray into the world of sheet masks and man oh man did I enjoy it! Again, I got this in a beauty box as sheet masks are not something I would generally go out and buy because I prefer having things that give me more than one use! This however was half an hour of pure relaxation and I loved it! I've hear people complain that some sheet masks don’t fit their face properly but this was perfect, it came in two sections, one for the top and one for the bottom of my face. It’s described as an aqua gel mask and it was so gooey and refreshing it felt amazing! It recommends leaving it on for 20-40 minutes and when the time came I didn’t want to take it off! My skin felt so moisturised, plump and fresh! I’ve just had a look online and seen that these come in a pack of 5 for £99 so looks like I won’t be repurchasing but I highly recommend them if you have the spare cash! Makeup Soap and Glory One Heck of a Blot Translucent Mattifying Powder This is a lovely lightweight powder that doesn’t make my makeup look cakey. However, it is nowhere near mattifying enough for me and I have to retouch several times a day! This is one I always dip in and out of so I’ll probably repurchase again in Winter when my skin generally feels a little drier! Max Factor False Lash Effect Waterproof Mascara One of my favourite mascaras and I think I already have about 2 backups in my drawer! This gives lots of length and a wide eyed look which I love, I always prefer it a little when it dries out as it has quite a wet formula to begin with! Soap and Glory Archery Brow Pencil So happy with myself for finishing this! Don’t get me wrong I love it but I use it probably 3 or 4 times a week and have had it for so long I thought it was never-ending! It has a handy spoolie on one end and a super thin twist up pencil on the other end that is lovely and pigmented and easy to use! Will repurchase in the future! Soap and Glory Mighty Mouth Smooth and Soften Lip Balm Another product I’ve had for an absolute age and I’m cheating slightly with this as it’s double ended and I’ve only finished one end! It’s a lip balm on one end and a screw up lip scrub on the other. I've had it for longer than I care to remember and while I liked the balm side the scrub is too hard and doesn’t work! I think it’s been discontinued but I wouldn’t have repurchased anyway! Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm My old favourite lip balm! I love this stuff and have several on me at all times. Its moisturising, long lasting and I love the minty scent! Already repurchased and backed up! Hair care Bataste Dry Shampoo Always a dry shampoo in my empties post! Batiste isn’t my favourite brand for dry shampoo but I do love the Blush scent so this will always be a repurchase because I can’t always find my favourite V05 one! Philip Kingsley Daily Damage Defence I’m so glad to be finished this! It did a great job of making my hair soft and protecting it from heat but I wasn’t a fan of the scent so I’m glad it’s all used up now! Won’t be repurchasing! Miscellaneous Cutex Ultra Cleansing Nail Polish Remover The best nail polish remover ever and the only one I ever buy! Its gets my nail polish off so easy, already repurchased! OPI Nail Envy Nail Strengthener I am now onto about my fourth bottle of this stuff! It’s incredible, it makes my nails so strong and shiny and I have already repurchased! Wisdom Tooth Floss Bit of a random one but I chucked it into my empties box when I finished it anyway! I am a serial flosser and switch between a few brands but I really like this, it lasts ages and most importantly it gets leftovers out of between my teeth! So that’s it for another empties! Let me know if you’ve tried any of the products I’ve mentioned and what you thought of them! Danielle xx Bloglovin | Instagram | Twitter | Pinterest
2023 is the year of next-level body care. It’s time that we take our skincare rituals beyond our beautiful faces and delicate décolleté. All of the skin on our bodies, from head-to-toe, deserves the utmost attention & care. Hence, where body treatments enter the chat. We are seeing more and more brands come out with their version of a ‘body serum,’ and the concept of face-grade ingredients being utilized in body care is becoming more than just a trend. We hope that it’s here to stay. But before you complete your purchase from the Instagram ad you just saw promoting the latest & greatest body serum, check the label for hidden toxins. While those products might look enticing, it’s important to take a second look at the ingredients being used. When we take the time to care for our bodies by splurging on those luxurious body scrubs and creams, it’s imperative to make sure that the products we are using are not doing more harm than good. From unwanted irritants to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, conventional (and trendy) body treatments can be laden with toxic chemicals. It’s also important to note that while many brands may make the claim that they are ‘natural,’ or get deemed ‘clean’ by a retailer, these terms are not standardized or regulated, meaning they can actually still contain many toxic chemicals while still being considered ‘clean’. This is where we come in. Knowledge is the best weapon to defend yourself against today’s disharmonic beauty & self care industry, so as long as you know what chemicals to look out for in your body care products, you can use your own, well-informed discernment when choosing the products you put on your sacred body. WHAT INGREDIENTS TO AVOID: A list of ingredients found in body treatment products that are harmful and should be avoided: -Parabens -Phthalates -Petroleum -Synthetic Colorants -Synthetic Fragrance -Silicones -Sulfates -Retinyl Palmitate (a dangerous form of Vitamin A) -Triclosan MAKE YOUR SWAP - NATURAL ALTERNATIVES: TATA HARPER RESURFACING BODY SERUM TYPE: Serum Treatment This is the game-changing serum to add to your body care ritual. It’s a gentle, exfoliating treatment that should be used on clean skin, post-shower and before your body oils and creams. It works to resurface the skin and encourage skin cell renewal by utilizing natural, plant-based, botanical extracts and active ingredients, sans the toxins. This treatment targets rough, dry skin to restore it back to supple hydration and baby-soft texture. It’s also very brightening to the skin, helping to fade any hyperpigmentation with face-grade, fruit-based Vitamin C. Plant-derived Vitamin A is used to support healthy cellular turnover, as opposed to Retinyl palmitate, a common, & very controversial, form of vitamin A used in conventional body serums to resurface the skin. According to data from an FDA study, when exposed to direct sunlight, Retinyl palmitate sped up the development of skin lesions and can be considered a carcinogen (1). EWG gave retinyl palmitate a score of 9 in its ingredient safety scale, marking it a high hazard chemical. The Cosmetics Database notes that there is concern for both reproductive and nonreproductive organ system toxicity with the chemical (2). Tata Harper is known for her outstanding commitment to utilizing natural, plant-based & clean ingredients so you know you’re nourishing your body with the crème of the crop. This serum gives you ultimate hydration & baby soft, super smooth skin from head-to-toe. TATA HARPER RESURFACING BODY SERUM AGENT NATEUR BODY (BALM) TYPE: Hydrating & Moisturizing Treatment Agent Nateur’s newest arrival is this ultra-rich, super hydrating, full body treatment crème. This body care product is also formulated with an abundance of nourishing face-grade ingredients from plant extracts to powerful active ingredients that are safe, clean & effective. This is going to give you that really dewy, supple finish without any harmful chemicals. Many of the conventional body balms and rich hydrating treatments on the market contain Petrolatum for their smoothing & softening effect. Petrolatums are often contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which have been associated with cancer. Instead, Agent sources the most innovative & elegant ingredients that are trademarked and patented to give your body beautiful hydration, a lifted, firming effect & glowing skin from day to night. Hi everyone, last empties of the year for me! These have been my favourite posts to write but I always let my empty containers build up a little too much so I’ll try and make them shorter in the new year! Have a scroll through and let me know if you’ve used anything and what you thought! Haircare Garnier Fructis Fortifying Shampoo Strength and Shine This is one of my favourite shampoos, I love the smell and how clean it makes my hair feel, it’s only £1 in Poundland and I've already repurchased! Tressemme 24 Hour Body Blow Dry Lotion I've had this for absolutely ages and use it nearly every time I wash my hair. I don’t notice it doing much for volume but it smells lovely and doesn’t weigh my hair done. I probably won’t repurchase straight away. Philip B Forever Shine Shampoo and Conditioner with Mega Bounce I got these free with an order on BeautyBay.com and really liked the conditioner but didn’t see anything special with the shampoo. The samples are small so I maybe didn’t use it enough but the full sizes are ridiculously expensive so I won’t be repurchasing! It has a strange smell but I quite liked it! Philip Kingsley Moisture Balancing Shampoo and Conditioner I really didn’t like these, again because of the size I probably didn’t get a great feel for them but my hair didn’t feel clean even after two washes and the conditioner was just OK. I wouldn’t repurchase! L’Occitane 5 Essential Oils Shampoo and Conditioner Again these were more samples that I got from this beauty box but I really didn’t like them! I have greasy hair so washing it with an essential oil shampoo did not agree with it at all and I had to go back and wash it with my normal shampoo. I ended up doing the first wash with this one then second wash with my own to get it used up. The conditioner was OK but not good enough to make me want to repurchase. If you have dry hair these may work better for you! REN Pro Vitamin Conditioner Not a fan of the smell of this conditioner and again because of the size I found it hard to see if it made a difference. I wouldn’t repurchase. Skincare DHC Deep Cleansing Oil I found this to be quite a dry oil when I first tried it but got used to it and really liked it in the end! I got it in a beauty box and it lasted way longer than I thought considering it’s such a small bottle but a little goes a long way! Would repurchase! Pixi Glow Tonic Again another sample from a beauty box, I used this when I was away last month to save me carrying my full size or having to decant it! I love this toner and would have loved to keep the mini bottle for the future but it leaked everywhere! Already repurchased the full size which you can read about here! Lush Popcorn lip scrub This is a daily essential for me, I love using it in the morning before putting on my lipstick as it gives me such a good smooth base. Have already repurchased and won one on VelvetBlush’s giveaway so my lips are very grateful! Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado This is really creamy and hydrating and I love using it at night-time but it’s too rich for me during the day. I have a few other eye creams to use up then I will be repurchasing! Full review here! Boots Essentials Eye Make Up Remover Gel This isn’t the greatest at actually removing eye makeup but I love it in the morning as its so cooling. Already repurchased! Garnier Express 2 in 1 Eye Makeup Remover This has featured on my blog many times before as I love it so much! It’s an oil based eye makeup remover and it’s so good at removing waterproof eye makeup! Already repurchased and using! Antipodes Vanilla Pod Hydrating Day Cream I really liked this, it’s light and hydrating, and perfect for taking with you if you are travelling and have liquid restrictions to stick to. I would repurchase in the future when I’m finished a few other moisturisers! Eyeko Mascara Off Eye Makeup Remover Wipes I usually don’t use wipes at all but again I got these in a beauty box a while back and took them with me on trips away. They were nicely moist, smelt lovely and were very gentle and effective at removing my waterproof eye makeup. They are about £6 for 10 wipes so I probably won’t repurchase but they were so handy to have! Bodycare St Tropez Tan Optimiser Body Polish My mum wasn’t using this so gave it to me to finish but to be honest it’s not the greatest scrub I’ve ever used so I wouldn’t repurchase! Nuxe Body Fondant Shower Gel This lathered up well but smells horrible, so I wouldn’t repurchase! REN Neroli and Grapefruit Body Cream and Body Wash This has quite a light refreshing citrusy scent but I don’t love it and I wasn’t blown away by either of these so I wouldn’t repurchase. Philip B Nordic Wood Hair and Body Shampoo This smells a little like bathroom cleaner to me and I prefer my body wash to be more perfumed so I wouldn’t repurchase! Caudalie Hand and Nail Cream This has quite an orangey scent but it’s not my favourite hand cream, I feel like my hands were actually a little dry after using it, so I wouldn’t repurchase. Fragrance Soap and Glory Mist You Madly Fragrance Mist This is my favourite Soap and Glory scent! It’s a nice weighty metal bottle and it smells lovely however it’s dearer than the body spray which I think smells slightly stronger so I’ll probably just stick to that for the time being! DKNY Be Delicious Skin Hydrating Eau de Toilette Spray Be Delicious is one of my favourite perfumes so when I saw this version last year for around £15 I snapped it up! I love popping this in my bag for touch-ups throughout the day and it’s so light and refreshing with a slight apple scent. I already have another one of these! Makeup Laura Mercier Foundation Primer Another beauty box sample, I absolutely loved this when I first got it and saved it for special occasions. However, the best before on the back says 6 months and I noticed a sharp decline in quality after this time! I do have another one that I haven’t opened yet and I’m hoping its OK because I really did like this when I first started using it and thought it kept my makeup looking better for longer! I love getting them in beauty boxes but I wouldn’t repurchase it on its own! Revlon Colorstay Foundation for Combination/Oily Skin This is my favourite daytime foundation; Buff is a really good colour match for me, it has great coverage and last all day on me! Already repurchased and using! NYX HD Concealer I loved this!! It’s so light, creamy and hydrating. I haven’t used it under the eyes as I use different concealer for that but this is perfect over spots and areas of pigmentation as it gives such good coverage. I already have another one opened that I’m using! Max Factor Mastertouch Under eye Concealer This featured in one of my first posts here and I’m so glad to be finished it. I have repurchased this concealer so many times in the past but the shade wasn’t working for me and I wasn’t happy with the coverage. Won’t be repurchasing! Carmex Pomegranate Moisturising Lip Balm I love this, it’s just a clear balm that lasts ages on my lips and made them feel really hydrated and gave them a bit of shine. I have so many lip balms to get through otherwise I would repurchase this straight away! Apologies again for such a ridiculously long empties post! So glad to get some of those sample sizes finished though! Let me know if you’ve tried anything or what you thought of it! Danielle xx
