Leyenda del Volcán La Malinche Hace muchos, muchos años, existía una doncella Tlaxcalteca de nombre Matlalcuéyetl, la cual era prometida del guerrero Cuatlapanga. En cierta ocasión el guerrero partió a tierras lejanas en cumplimiento de una misión y al transcurrir el tiempo Matlalcuéyetl se sentía triste al pensar en su amado en las batallas; así transcurrió el tiempo y su amado no llegaba, después de mucho esperar murió de tristeza. Al terminar la misión encomendada Cuatlapanga llegó a buscarla, pero recibió la noticia que su amada había fallecido de tristeza y fue a llorar a los pies de su tumba y ahí quedo el guerrero convertido en cerro que lleva su nombre y Matlacuéyetl en el volcán. Matlalcuéyetl es el nombre que los indígenas Tlaxcaltecas daban al volcán pero, a la llegada de los españoles y en honor de una doncella que fue intérprete de los mismos de nombre Malintzin empezaron a nombrarlo así. La palabra Malinche resultó del modismo español de Malintzin.
