Are you looking for a fun craft to make with your children for Book Week? These cute Australian birds were inspired by one of this year’s CBCA shortlisted Early Childhood books, “Busy Beaks,” written and illustrated by Sarah Allen. “Spend a day with Australia’s most vibrant and unique feathered friends. Full of splashing shorebirds, clattering cockatoos, parading penguins and greedy galahs, Busy Beaks is the perfect introduction to birds of all shapes and sizes.“ Busy Beaks is a wonderful mix of picture story book and fact book in one beautifully illustrated edition. It guides readers through a day in the life of our Australian birds from sunrise to sunset. My students just loved finding out interesting facts about their favourite birds in the Facts and Feathers section of the book, and sharing stories about their encounters with our feathered friends. Today we are going to make our own busy beaks, using cardboard tubes and coloured paper. To make your own busy beak, you will need the following craft supplies: Supplies You have a choice of making your bird from colour paper or using white paper and colouring it in. We will go through the colouring in option first. Kookaburra Step 1 Let’s make a kookaburra! To make this cute little bird, download the template, colour it in and cut it out. Step 2 To make your body, place your cardboard tube on some white paper, and mark out the length of the tube with a grey lead pencil. Roll the tube along the paper to ensure you have enough paper to go around the roll with a small overlap. Cut out the paper, colour in if desired and glue to the cardboard tube. Step 3 Time to wing it! Glue the wing & tail combo to the body of the bird. Step 4 Add the eye patches. Glue the eye patches just above the wings. Step 5 Glue the eyes on the patches and colour in the pupils. Step 6 Make your beak. To make your beak make 2 folds either side of the middle of the beak and glue closed. Add some glue to the folded edge and stick to your bird inbetween the wings. And your finished! How cute is your kookaburra!? Cockatoo & Galah Step 1 To make a cockatoo, galah or even a parrot, the first step is to download and print the template. This time we will go through using colour paper. Let’s make a galah! Step 2 Once you have printed your template, cut out the pieces and place them on the colour paper. Trace around the template pieces and cut out. Step 3 To make your body, place your cardboard tube on some colour paper, and mark out the length of the tube with a grey lead pencil. Roll the tube along the paper to ensure you have enough paper to go around the roll with a small overlap. Cut out the colour paper and glue to the cardboard tube. Step 4 Add your tail feathers. Put glue on the top section of the tail feathers and stick to the bottom section of the cardboard tube. Now glue your second set of tail feathers slightly higher than the first set, so you can see the bottom layer peeking through. Step 5 Stick your wings to either side of your bird. Make sure the smaller part of the wing is at the bottom. Step 6 Make your beak. To make your beak make 2 folds either side of the middle of the beak and glue closed. Add some glue to the folded edge and stick to your bird inbetween the wings. Step 7 Add your eyes. Glue the eyes on your bird either side of the beak. Draw some pupils on the eyes using a black pencil or felt tip pen. Step 8 If you are making a cockatoo or galah it’s time to add your crest. To do this make 2 small cuts on the top of your birds head, 1 at the front and 1 at the back. Now slide your crest into the 2 cuts and your finished! It’s time to meet your new feathered friend. Here are some more feathered friends you might like to make, a cockatoo, kookaburra, palm cockatoo or eastern rosella. Or why not create your own bird? Here is one my daughter had lots of fun making. Growing up the Easter bonnet parade at school was one of my most favourite things to do. 2020 Topic 15: Shades of White Hi everyone, Keren here with a pretty tricky but oh, so beautiful topic: Shades of White. As soon as I read the title, I immediately started humming 'Whiter Shades of Pale' and remembered a rather ancient advert by Dulux (hence the photo of the Dulux dog) introducing some rather subtle shades of white. If we are talking about shades of white in PaperArtsy's collection, then the choice is rather more vast ! We're going to do this post slightly differently by showing the different types of light and white colours in their colour families followed by a coordinating image to give you some inspiration. You couldn't describe all of these as shades of white, but I thought it would make a interesting introduction to the topic. I do think that using mostly light colours is a challenge but as usual, plenty of our bloggers have previously risen to this challenge. Alison Bomber produced a real beauty here. Delicate, with subtle colours and using her lovely quotes. Alison Bomber Helen Chilton produced some gorgeous hearts using a wide range of techniques and even used tea bags. She has faint hints of blue-purples and browns. PaperArtsy Blog These whites look so different; cool colours, blue greys and more 'snowflake' whites. Chris Cresswell created a wonderful triptych bursting with texture. PaperArtsy Blog We are looking at all the lightest colours in the range. Going from the lightest shades to cooler and then warmer shades. We begin with a trio of Neutrals: Chalk, Eggshell and Heavy Cream. It's only when you get these colours and paint them next to each other, that you will see the difference. It's not easy to distinguish them on a computer screen. This gorgeous white, slightly tinted prints are incredibly delicate. Wool-bulb Going towards the greys we have Snowflake- the perfect all-rounder white. This scrapbooking page is an excellent example of just how impactful one colour can be. I say colour for ease. We know that white isn't strictly a colour because of its lack of a specific wavelength (just like black), but forgive me, we'll keep assuming it's a colour for simplicity! This page works so well because of the multiple textures that stop it looking flat and uninteresting. Taking our focus to the cooler side, we've got the icy Grey Blue: Iceberg. It has greyer tones and is a big contender for contemporary projects plus coordinating wonderfully with all the blues, greys and purple/blues. This artist below claims that they've created a quick and simple sketch. I'd love to do anything half as good as this, even taking a long while! Whilst it's mostly black and white, the grey tones provide great shading and make the piece so 3 dimensional. Zen.Linea Very light blues are up next: Antarctic, Glacier Ice & Blue Bayou. Soft blues with a cool base. This card has all the hallmarks of wintery colours with crisp white berries and a flurry of snow. Birgit Heading away from just blues and towards Blue-Purples, we have Periwinkle. A purple-y gentle colour. This slide art has purple-y tones and the transparency gives a fun floating effect to the skull. My Porch Prints The next two are full on purples: Moonlight and Pixie Dust. Pretty shades with a real lightness. This book page is full of movement and the purple goes so well even with more of a vanilla background. The octopus is sublime! Fresh Prints Changing tack completely and going on to fresher greens and highlighting the newer Fresco Willow. This stunning backsplash has whites and greeny-whites and a real transparent quality. New Ravenna These next greens have a cool tone: Niagara Falls and Hint of Mint. Perfect partners! This watercolour piece uses the transparency of watercolour really well. Those white petals really draw your eye into the piece. Grafik Boutique Adding in more yellow, we've got the Khaki Greens and Honeydew is part of the family with a real delicacy. It's easy to dump khakis in with muddy greens, but they don't have to be. This incredible switch cover has some of those greens nestled amongst white and blues. Gabiw Art Onto Browns; Cloud 9 and Nougat take centre stage. These shades are a vintage lovers delight. This perfectly vintage inspired mini journals are breathtaking. The use of buttons, lace and ribbon is exquisite. Nancy Maxwell James The vintage look makes good use of soft pinks too. Blush is such a sweet and pretty colour. This serene tag has a blush centre and grey / blue toned ink. Notice the fabulous texture on the tag surface. Diana Taylor Having dipped our toe in charm of vintage, we're going full throttle vintage now. The lightest 'Rustic Warms' in the PaperArtsy Fresco family are Vanilla and Vintage Lace. I wouldn't have thought to put a bright Snowflake type white with a yellow based cream like Vanilla or Vintage Lace, but it works so perfectly. Little Prairie Sparrow I thought as we were focusing on PaperArtsy paint colours, it might be nice to round off the introduction with another PaperArtsy designer's project. This piece by Sara Naumann has a real lightness and a mix of colours that make the white sing. PaperArtsy Blog I hope this has made you want to explore white and the colours that suit it so well.
