One of the book arts most commonly encountered by book collectors, especially on volumes which pre-date publishers' cloth bindings (as well as on many modern fine press titles), is marbling: Marbling is believed to have been invented in China over 2000 years ago, and is known to have been used on paper (in Japan) as early as the 12th century CE. It has been used for bookbindings and endpapers for hundreds of years: Marbling has been used to create bindings that are exclusively (or almost exclusively) marbled paper, and it has been used to create bindings that are a mix of other materials (such as leather) and marbled paper: In books, though, marbling usually is seen to best effect when it is used to create endpapers... ...and pastedowns for books: Marbling also is often used to enhance the appearance of...

I created this as a specially commissioned birthday present for a travel-loving friend. The book is about 6 inches square, and has an unusual binding that's a combination of French and Coptic stitching. I only attached the back of the text-block to the cover so that the stitching would be exposed. The outside cover is a beloved pair of the recipient's favorite shorts that had to be consigned to the rag pile, only to be resurrected in a new life as part of a half binding. The spine and corners are book cloth. I sewed the tabs on the sewing machine because I wanted to use something besides elastic to hold the book together. I hand-sewed the toggles to the straps. The inside pages hold lots of different surprises and start off with a quote that says "The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page". The endpaper inside is hand marbled - I even included a secret pocket for stashing away important documents or mementos. more "step by step" photos will be appearing tomorrow on my blog - Top Secret VIP List | Blog | Twitter | Pinterest | Instagram
One day many years ago, while visiting Norway, I wandered into a small bookshop in the old part of Oslo. There on a long table were stacks of patterned papers. I soon learned that these were from the workshop of the famous Norwegian bookbinder and book artist H.M. Refsum. Refsum worked in Kristiania (later called Oslo) from the mid 19th to the early 20th century. A master bookbinder in leather, but he really seemed to excel at decorating paper, which he used as endpapers, and also to cover books. He employed a number of familiar paper printing techniques, such as Marbling, Woodblock or Linoleum Printing, and Stencilling. But he also experimented with texture, Combing, Finger Painting, and other techniques to manipulate the paints and ink on the surface of the paper. His color palette and aesthetic seem to have been greatly influenced by the natural history of his native country, for example Reindeer Moss, the fjords, mountains, and the Marine Environment - coral, sea urchins and jelly fish. In the field of Book Arts, H.M. Refsum might be to Norway, what William Morris was to Great Britain. A hundred years later his decorative papers still look fresh and modern. Loving Refsum's turn-of-the-century take on sixties' tie-dye, Marjorie
