Travel and food go together like avocado and toast, coffee and doughnuts. But it’s not just about eating out or finding excellent bars to hole yourself up in for a night. Anthony Puharich shares his five favourite food markets here – grab a grocery bag and get ready to eat. 1. La Boqueria, Barcelona In a single word: amazing! Simply walking into this very busy, buzzy market off La Ramblas will intoxicate you. Stock up on awesome produce and if time permits, grab a stool at El Quim for some tasty tapas. 2. Harrods Food Hall, London The one and only. It’s expensive, but for good reason: it’s one of the absolute best. I consider it a must-visit – at least once! 3. Peck, Milan Founded in 1883, this is probably the best food store in the world – no exaggeration. Everything they do here is just perfection. History and quality matched with good old-fashioned humble service. 4. Borough Markets, London If you don’t walk out of this place two kilos heavier, you have done something wrong. 5. Tsukiji Fish Market, Tokyo Yeah, yeah, I know. It’s a fish market: it’s sacrilege for me to even visit this place! But it’s hands down a must-do experience if you’re in Tokyo. Get there early to watch the fishermen auction whole tuna for tens of thousands of dollars. An early sashimi breakfast is a must, too!
