Step back in time to a marriage in 1815... This Swedish mariage coffer, with a storyboard history, made from pine and hand painted, is delightful in many ways. Firstly, it was given to Karin Nilsdotter of Malung, Kopparberg, Sweden. She was 22 years old when presented with her marriage chest, quite remarkable to be able to trace this back in time to a town in Sweden. Karin Nilsdotter was born on 5 March 1793, in Malung, Kopparberg, Sweden, her father, Nils Ericsson, was 46 and her mother, Ingeborg Larsdotter, was 41. She married Eric Ericsson on 26 December 1815, in Malung, Kopparberg, Sweden. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 1 daughter. She died on 8 November 1829, in her hometown, at the age of 36, and was buried in Malung, Kopparberg, Sweden. This charming coffer is painted in blue, has her name painted in a lovely script, embellished with pretty floral folk art. With constant use over the 209 years of use, the artwork is still visible. The ironwork still has the original paintwork, although well worn, the various colours and tones seem to be synonymous with Sweden and colours that show time and time again. Also the type of button bolts used to secure the hinges were made from high quality materials of the time. Amazing and how incredible it is to see the original lock and working key. The lock is a sprung mechanism, so you have to remember NOT to put the key inside when closing the lid. Period: Dated to 1815Material: Pine & PaintedProvenance: Given to Karin Nilsdotter of Malung, Kopparberg, Sweden on the 26 December 1815 on her marriage to Eric Ericsson.Approximate Dimensions: 37cm high 92cm wide 53cm deepCondition: As you can imagine, our products have had a life before we got them, been used and cherished by many others before we received them. A rare 19th-century Zanzibar chest made of thick teak slabs and outfitted with brass studs in a stunning design on the front and top. All of the brass hardware is heavy and thick. The wood is painted red. There are 3 lower drawers with locks. (no keys) Dowry chests have a well-documented history as cultural icons of the Eastern Hemisphere. A chest was essential in a marriage agreement, and the style and size often served as a status symbol of the bride's family. The chest became an integral piece of furniture in the new couple's home, usually being used as a table or bench. This style comes from the unique era of Omani-occupied Zanzibar, where they were often used in the export of spices, rugs, and silks in the 18th and 19th centuries.
