What's black and white and black and white and black and white and black and white? ANSWER: One of the Nuns from the local Catholic Church, rolling down a hill ! Ha ! That dubious joke was told to me by my devout Catholic friend when we were just kids in the local elementary school. These days, any jokes about peoples' religion or culture are considered in bad taste, and politically incorrect all around. For example, "Towel Head" and Rag Head" jokes are near Taboo. BUT...what about...BASKET HEADS ??? Fortunately in Japan, the Japanese can laugh about themselves, their religions and their culture WITHOUT GETTING BENT OUT OF SHAPE. Even "Family TV" shows have made no end of poking fun at many of the religious traditions handed down to them by their "Honorable Ancestors". Other religions and cultures would do well to learn from them in this regard. These Men from Mars are actually called KOMUSO, and are members of a ZEN SECT of Buddhism going from house to house "begging alms" in exchange for a "blessing" to rid the house of (or protect it from) the forces of evil. It usually works, too -- thanks to the PLACEBO EFFECT. But, I hate telling people the truth about these guys, because it detracts from my ridiculous captions. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Komus%c5%8d The wiki site does not mention it, but certain of these Basket Head sects were actually prohibited by law at certain times, because gangsters and other yakuza types started walking around like this so people wouldn't recognize them....and they used this disguise to get to their enemies, or to get close enough to make trouble. Much like today where the occasional male might don an Islamic Burka to commit a crime, or avoid getting recognized and caught for something. Fortunately, both then and now, Japan does not allow itself to be controlled "political correctness" in such cases, and has no qualms about telling either a MUSLIM or a KOMUSO to "take the damn thing off" if the situation requires it. And any claim of religious or cultural harassment in such cases would be a waste of time. Obviously, the laws were made and rescinded as times changed, and you can find plenty of these old photos from the mid-to-late Meiji era and beyond. In any case, I present to you "The Basket Heads"....playing their "Shakuhachi" (Bamboo Flutes) and collecting alms from those who care to give. 1904 photograph by Julian Cochrane. From a Stereoview.
