It is growing season and garden nurseries are overflowing with plants. I have been spending a great deal of time outdoors sprucing up my back porch and planning for my vegetable / herb gardening bed. One of my to-do list items for my back porch was to create a shade loving planter. My back porch has a roof over it so not much sun light gets back there. Container gardening is a fun way of bringing instant impact to your space that will add living pops of color and texture. If you live in an apartment or don't have much space to garden, container gardening is a way of dealing with this. Here are some tips that will give you an professional looking planter every time. Tip 1 For starters, it is extremely important to use a good quality soil. Many nurseries will be able to guide you in choosing a good quality soil. I use Miracle Grow Organic Choice which is good to use with vegetables fruits, flowers and herbs. I have noticed a big difference in my plants since I switched to this soil vs the top soil I was using before. Tip 2 Add about an inch or so of rock to the bottom of your pots to insure proper drainage. Tip 3 Do not fill to the top of your pot with soil, leave the soil level at least an inch or two lower than the top of your pot. Tip 4 Now, the fun part, plant it up with a tall, dramatic thriller plant, a hardworking filler and a trailing spiller. Here is the anatomy of my 'made for the shade' planter: Thriller - Coleus Solenostemon scutellarioides 'Vino' / Maidenhair Fern Filler - Begonia (bronze leaf pink) / Alyssum (white) Spiller - Glacier Ivy Hedera helix I chose two thrillers, I just couldn't pass up that fern. I had never seen anything like it. It is so soft to the touch and airy in appearance. This is my first shade loving planter and I can't wait to see my plants grow and fill out. My back porch to-do list is almost complete. I have done everything on the list that I wanted to complete for this year! I have installed my outdoor curtains, we actually hung them early last month, but I haven't gotten around to taking any pictures. :( Lets revisit my to-do list, shall we. Back Porch To-Do List Purchase an outdoor rug Add vibrate fluffy cushions and pillows Plant some shade loving plants in colorful planters Hang outdoor curtains - need to take pictures Paint concrete Install a ceiling fan If you want to create instant impact on your porch, patio or deck, follow these simple planting tips and you will have a lush, gorgeous, professional looking planter in no time flat! Have you planted anything lately? Do tell! See ya soon! Linking up with Our Fifth House!

So my project this weekend was to make some flower pots for my front step. I was inspired by the tiered flowerpots found here at Positively Splendid. I normally do traditional colors in the house so I decided to step out of the box and make my flower pots teal and coral, two great summer colors. I was drawn to the polka dots as well... what's more fun than polka dots for the summer. After painting my pots and stenciling the polka dots and the house number, I set out to find the perfect flowers. Much to Mark's dismay it took 3 different stores before I finally found the flowers I was looking for. The next day I came home and planted them and shortly realized that while I really liked these flowers, the flowers were not to fond of me. Hopefully after a few days they will perk up some more. Hey, I can't be savvy in crafting and gardening... So with much ado here is my final product... I also decided to tie my front door into the summer colors and added a polka dotted 'W'. Go me!

Wow, it's been over a year since my last clothing tutorial.. How did that happen?! Anyways.. I've seen a few shirts like this floating around the internet. I saw them, loved them and thought, wow.. I could make that! So, I did. It was super easy, super versatile! It cost about 5.00 to make and took under an hour. I took pictures along the way, but sadly there is not much light in my little apartment. So, I have some lovely digital illustrations as well.. I hope they can help make things clearer! You will need: A sewing machine A yard or two of fabric Fabric or lace for the sash Matching thread Scissors Like I said in my first tutorial, I don't measure, but this part is pretty simple. I hold the fabric over my torso, until it reaches my sides, I add an inch or so, then cut! You will need to make two of these. (Front and Back) It's okay if you make them a little too big, the shirt is supposed to be a bit baggy. Plus you can always take the shirt in later. The long skinny, wavy piece above is for the sash.. we'll worry about that later. Next, you are going to sew up the sides. Don't go all the way up, You need to leave room for the sleeves and arms! Next, is hemming up the arm holes. You are going to want to take the parts where you didn't sew together, Fold it a little and sew. Make sure the shirt is inside out while you do this. This is what it should look like. Pretty easy so far right? Well, you are almost done! Next we are making the part that holds the sleeves. Fold where the red line is, and sew the folded part onto the shirt. Do that with both the front and the back. The illustrations no longer show the arms being hemmed.. So use your imagination. ;) It's just a guide to show you where stitches will be. (Inside of the shirt) (Outside of the shirt, plus a Wicket paw) Next step.. Play with your puppy if you have one. He really didn't like not being the center of my attention. Next step, hem up the bottom of the shirt! You are almost done! Now you add the sash or ribbon. You basically just feed the sash though one hole, then through the back, leaving the ribbon out a bit to make a sleeve. Gather the fabric along the sash, so it has a nice ruffle to it. And that's it! Tie a pretty bow on the side, or braid the excess fabric, you could even attach a cute pin over the bow! If you don't know how to make a sash, don't fret.. It's easy! Cut a long strip of fabric, again, this is to your liking and size. sew the sides longways so you have a long tube. Turn it inside out, so the sewn part is hidden. (This part takes the longest.) Then hem up the short sides. (This is the sash being turned inside out) The best part about this shirt, is that it is versatile! It has interchangeable sleeves. It looks great on it's own, with a cardigan, a vest, belted.. etc. You could even made it a few inches longer and wear it with leggings. I'm totally going to make more of these! The shirt is a tad wrinkly for the pictures.. but only cause I've been wearing it a lot! Imagine the possibilities!

The third Pinterest Challenge hosted by Young House Love couldn't have come at a better time! I had already decided to end the cycle of houseplant genocide that's been taking place in my living room for the last few years. I wanted some sort of greenery to replace the numerous houseplants that have fallen victim to my not-so-green thumb, but wasn't sure what to do. When I saw the terrariums that Brittany created for the last Pinterest challenge, I was completely taken with the idea! Succulent terrariums seemed like the perfect fit since they are lovely and require very little maintenance. (i.e. they are hard to kill!) Drawing inspiration from Brittany's original "pinspiration" I knew I wanted to create something layered with multiple levels of rocks, moss and dirt. I wanted the layers to showcase the stones I've picked up on Lake Huron and Lake Michigan beaches over the last few years. (Stones and shells currently reside in little Ikea jars tucked away in my office) My original plan was to use tall apothecary jars for the containers but as I shopped I realized that I was drawn to cleaner shapes and open vessels. The jars started to seem like they would be too "fussy" for the look I wanted to create. After a foray to HomeGoods and TJ Maxx I ended up with six possible containers. (Yes, I only planned to make two terrariums but I like to have options!) For my plant material, I found a wide selection of succulents at both Home Depot and Lowe's. They seem to have recognized the succulent trend and totally jumped on the band wagon. I was pleasantly surprised to find so many types. True, some look like scary alien plants but I found plenty of cute ones. Of course, I bought too many plants as well but I actually needed more than I had anticipated. Sometimes it's good to go overboard! The left-over plants will all find good homes, I'm sure. The last nitty gritty part of the project was the dirt and moss. I picked up a special "Cactus & Succulent" soil and sheet moss at Lowe's to complete my supply list. So with all my supplies gathered, I started to look at my containers and narrow down the selection. I pared down to three shapes I really liked and then kept editing until I figured out which two shapes worked together and would fit the space I was going to place them in. I ended up with two very simple cylinder vases as the winners! Next I just layered in the rocks, soil, plants and VOILA! The terrariums took shape. Arranging the plants and rocks "just so" did take a little finagling, so don't worry if you injure a few plants along the way. The succulents can seem fragile since their pudgy little "leaves" break off easily but they are pretty resilient suckers. The broken pieces will just grow back! As with any project, there are a few things I would have done differently but overall I'm really pleased with the look of my terrariums. Here's hoping we live a long and fruitful life together!
