As you are hopefully aware, the GAMSAT test is one of the major obstacles in the path to graduate-entry medical programs. While GAMSAT is a mandatory requirement, there is some flexibility in when should you take the GAMSAT exam: the exam runs twice a year, and scores are valid for up to four years (previously two years). This is a new change that ACER announced in November 2022. For more information and to learn more about what this means for you, you can read our guide to the 2023 GAMSAT Exam Dates. While this flexibility can be quite useful, it can also be problematic, as it means that you’ll have to make a decision about when you’d like to slap down >$500 on the dubious privilege of sitting this exam. If you’ve been on US pre-med forums, you may have seen students agonising about the best time to sit MCAT, because MCAT has a lifetime limit on the number of attempts and many US universities consider all attempts when deciding who to admit. Rest assured that these same factors do not apply to Australia! GAMSAT has an unlimited number of lifetime attempts, and universities only look at one. As this means that you can theoretically sit the exam as many times as you’d like, this also means that the timing of when to take GAMSAT isn’t as important as it is for US students sitting MCAT. However, if you’d like to minimise your number of attempts (and I don’t blame you!) then read on. In this blog post, I’ll explore several factors to consider when deciding when to sit GAMSAT. Also, check What is GAMSAT for everything you need to know about the GAMSAT test. GAMSAT Test: “Hard” Factors Most factors in deciding when to sit GAMSAT are what I might call “soft” factors- factors that might make studying a little bit easier or harder, for instance. “Hard” factors, on the other hand, represent a more distinct boundary: these are factors that will definitively tell you that you should not sit the exam at this time. One such example of a “hard” factor is the validity of GAMSAT scores. As mentioned above, GAMSAT scores are valid for up to four years. Therefore, it goes without saying that you should not sit GAMSAT more than four years before when you wish to apply. Spend your first year of university settling in and adjusting to university life; you’ll have plenty of time to worry about GAMSAT later! Other “hard” factors are the timing and location of GAMSAT tests. GAMSAT is held twice a year, in March and September, and only in certain locations which are published on ACER’s website. In Australia, GAMSAT is offered in more test centres in March compared to September (at least at the time of writing). One of the most important things you can do if you’re thinking about registering for the GAMSAT Exam is to read the ACER GAMSAT information booklet. If you don’t live in a major city, you’ll have to figure out when you’ll be able to take leave from study or work to travel and sit GAMSAT. GAMSAT Test: Financial Considerations GAMSAT is an expensive exam, weighing in at >$500 per sitting ($518 at the time of writing). Furthermore, medical school is also an expensive endeavour: even if you have a Commonwealth-supported place and plan to take a HECS-HELP loan, there are lots of hidden costs such as parking at hospital sites, and there is limited time to take up a part-time job to cover the costs. If you’re not financially stable enough to sit GAMSAT, it may be worth spending some time working and getting yourself more established before you apply for medical school. As a bonus, mature age medical students often bring a wealth of life experience and professional know-how with them, so the experience might even make you a better doctor- and certainly one who is better placed to empathise with patients who are less well-off. If you do have the money to sit GAMSAT, think about how many times you would be able to afford studying for and sitting the exam. Some people are well-off and/or have significant support from family and can afford to sit the GAMSAT test as many times as required to get into medical school. For these people, the “when should I sit GAMSAT?” question is almost meaningless, as they could simply keep resitting the exam. However, if you aren’t fortunate enough to be one of these people, there are free trial courses you may want to consider, then you’ll need to be a bit choosier about when you sit the exam, as you’ll want your one or two (or however many) sitting(s) to be top-notch. Which brings me to my next point… GAMSAT Test: Preparation Considerations Australian medical schools, fortunately, do not take all GAMSAT sittings into account: they only look at the GAMSAT score that you tell them to look at (provided it was from a sitting within the last two years). Furthermore, there is no restriction to the number of times you can sit GAMSAT. With these two factors in mind, you could theoretically just keep sitting GAMSAT until you get a score high enough to get you into medical school. However, as stated previously, this isn’t a practical option for many people, in part due to the cost of the exam. There are available GAMSAT preparation materials you can check if you want to maximise your chances of success to sit the exam once or twice and or visit this article to know how to improve your GAMSAT score. There is hardly ever a perfect time to prepare for GAMSAT (or anything, really)- little things will inevitably crop up throughout the year. However, it’s still not a bad idea to avoid sitting GAMSAT during particularly turbulent times, such as when looking after a seriously ill family member. Think about other factors that might help or hinder your study and figure out if and how these factors can be optimised- I’m talking stuff like taking leave from work, choosing easier units for a semester, and so on. You’ll also want to make sure that you have all (or most) of your study resources ready before you start studying, so you can hit the ground running and make the most of your study time. Conclusion While the question of when to sit GAMSAT is arguably less important for Australians than for our US counterparts, it’s still an important thing to consider if you’re not fortunate enough to have unlimited resources to throw at GAMSAT. Avoid scheduling GAMSAT during times of upheaval in your life, and make sure you have sufficient resources (financial and study time/materials) before you start. It also goes without saying that you make sure that you only sit GAMSAT within two years of your application- it’d be frustrating to get a good score, only to be told that you can’t use it!
