Assalammualaikum and Hye everyone. Today I would like to share about the theory that I have applied during my counselling session. I have used Choice Theory Reality Therapy for my very first counselling session. Reality Therapy founded by William Glasser, a clinical psychologist. To improve the therapy, he combined the therapy with Choice Theory. And that’s the reason why the theory become Choice Theory Reality Therapy. An individual has a freedom to choose and make any decision for themselves. However, what’s the matter is either the decision is appropriate or not. The past may be painful, but revisiting it does not help with what we need to do now, which is to improve an important and present relationship (Glasser, 1998, p. 334). From this therapy, Glasser also less focusing on the past event of an individual. He more focusing on what had happen now and highlight about an individual should learn to take the responsibility for themselves and build a more appropriate identity. Besides, this therapy proposed that human have five basic needs that they need to fulfil which is survival, love and belonging, power, fun and freedom. If one of the basic needs can’t be fulfill, its will affect them and make them problematic. As a counselor that using this therapy for their counselling session, they need to focus on what the clients wants from the aspects of 5 basic needs. A counselor should identify the basic needs that is lacking in client life by asking them to tell and explain each of the basic needs. A counselor also can ask directly to the client to identify what basic need that they are lacking on. This 5 basic needs can be relating to the quality world of client. The counsellor can identify the reason why the client lacks of the basic needs through picture the quality world of the client. Quality world contains the important person in our life, the things that we really want to own and the belief that govern much of our behaviour. When I conducted the session, one of the way I can identify the quality world of client is by asking him to draw on the piece of paper on what he imagine of his quality world. After my client are done with drawing his quality world, I asked my client to explain to me about what he already draw and ask him to relate the component that he draw in his quality world with the 5 basic needs. I ask him to identify what basic needs that he can’t fulfil from each of the component that he draw. From this, I can identify why my client lack in any of the basic needs. The reason why I chose to talk about the 5 basic needs is because it is one of the things that really help me in exploration when I conducted the counselling session. It’s tough to identify the real issue of my client. But after I explore based on this 5 basic needs, I managed to know the real issue of my client.
