The Wildlife Interpretative Gallery at the Detroit Zoo features the Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden. The original building was designed by the architect William H. Creaser, and the Gallery features large Pewabic tile peacocks at the entrance and exit. The Wildlife Interpretive Gallery was originally the Detroit Zoo Bird House, and was completed December 31, 1926. At the time, it was typical for aviaries in the United States. The Bird House is a good example of Neo-Classical architecture, illustrating how classical religious architecture helped shape the floor plans, symbols and details of secular buildings. The famous glass dome of the 1926 Bird House remains a Detroit Zoo landmark and provides the appropriate cathedral space for a place to celebrate nature.
