Giant Pill Millipede - Danum Valley, Malaysia To keep with the Halloween theme that I started with my previous photo of the tiger leech. I think this giant millipede fits the theme due to its halloween colors, orange and black. These large millipedes were common and were frequently seen moving over the damp leaf litter in the jungle. When threatened they would roll up in a ball, which helps defend them against some predators. I have had some difficulty IDing these. The previous photo I posted I said it was in the order Glomerida, while its not impossible I think its actually a member of the order Sphaerotheriida. Both orders are found in SE Asia but Glomerida is typically found in the northern hemisphere. And Sphaerotheriida is found further south and includes the giant pill millipedes. Furthermore this must be in the family Zephroniidae, the family that inhabits south east Asia. From there I have been able to narrow it down just a tad more to Genera that are found in Borneo but I haven't been able to ID it down to species level due to there not being many resources to do so available. The genera it could belong to are Bothrobelum (1 species), Rajasphaera (1 species), Sphaeropoeus (22 species), Zephronia (37 species). Not all those species are found in Borneo but the genera are and I'm not sure how many of the species from each possibly exist in Borneo.
