Чтобы показать минерал с лучшей стороны необходимо его огранить. Как правило, большинство камней в первичном природном состоянии выглядят вполне обычно и непривлекательно. Любители и коллекционеры минералов отлично это знают. От мастера требуется подобрать наиболее выгодный тип огранки для конкретного минерала, учесть все его недостатки и достоинства.
Огранка – это способ обработки камней, при котором ему придается желаемая, часто симметричная, многогранная форма.
В раннем неолите (9500 лет до н. э.) умели шлифовать камни, но больше всего любили янтарь. Он требовали меньше всего усилий. Со временем человек научился полировать и придавать желаемую форму большинству минералов.
В ювелирном искусстве Античности встречались уже довольно сложные формы огранок, в том числе и тончайшая резьба по камню – камеи и инталии.
Огранке и обработке подвергались полудрагоценные и поделочные камни, а также изумруды, рубины, сапфиры. Также давно были известны и алмазы. Но долгое время они не гранились, а лишь шлифовались. Это связано с твердостью минерала. Гранить алмазы научились только в XVI веке.
Есть два типа огранки: с гранями (фасетами) и без граней (фасетов). К первым относят бриллиантовый стиль огранки, ступенчатый, микс стилей и огранки розой. Ко вторым: кабошон, камея, инталия, высокий кабошон (сахарная голова), кабошон с углублением.
Самым древним и простым типом огранки является кабошон. Это слово происходит от французского слова «caboshe», которое означает «шляпка гвоздя, головка». Кабошон имеет выпуклую форму полусферы. Нижняя часть камня при этом остается плоской. Этот вид огранки идеально подходит для непрозрачных минералов. Например, бирюза, хризопраз, сердолик и т.д. В основании кабошон может быть любой формы.
Кабошон с углублением - когда в плоском основании есть полукруглое углубление. Это делают для очень темных полупрозрачных камней, чтобы они лучше пропускали свет. Или если предполагается дополнительное закрепление камня на клей.
Высокий кабошон (Сахарная голова) - в профиль такой камень высоко поднимается над основанием. Конец может быть более острый, или со скругленным углом.
Двойной кабошон - если он выпуклый с двух сторон.
Кабошон для камней с оптическим эффектом - некоторые оптические эффекты можно показать только сферической или другой выпуклой криволинейной формой огранки. К ним относят астеризм (эффект звезды) и эффект кошачьего глаза (светлый отблеск в виде подвижной линии). Чаще всего это сапфиры и рубины с эффектом астеризма, разновидности хризоберилла з эффектом кошачьего глаза. Огранка таких камней отличается от обычного кабошона, например, имеет неполированное основание у светлых полупрозрачных камней.
Камея - имеет плоское основание и выпуклый рельефный вырезанный сюжет, узор, рисунок. Относится к искусству геммы.
Инталия - имеет плоское основание и углубленный вырезанный сюжет, рисунок, инициалы. Тоже относится к геммам.
Она состоит из трех главных составляющих: корона, рундист и павильон. Через корону мы смотрим, через рундист камень закрепляется, павильон рассеивает отбивает и свет.
Это одна одна из самых распространенных огранок. Она появилась в XVII веке. Чаще всего встречаются огранка круглой формы с 57 гранями. Огранке 57 и более граней поддаются алмазы весом от 0,05 карат. Может быть вариант 17 и 33 граней для камней меньшего размера.
Площадка - самая большая грань, от нее отходят грани в форме воздушного змея (главные грани короны). Так создается звезда, а между лучами звезды расположены клины короны и грани короны.
Нижняя часть - павильон, состоит из длинных клиньев (главные грани павильона) и треугольников (клинья павильона). Старые варианты бриллиантовой огранки имеют еще одну грань в павильоне. Она маленькая и параллельная таблице - колета. Если ее нет - точку схода граней павильона называют шипом.
Форма огранки может быть любой: круглой, грушевидной, овальной, маркиза и т.д. Главное - принцип и количество граней.
Грани располагаются лесенкой – одна под другой, а не в шахматном порядке. Форма верхней грани – многоугольник, а боковых – равнобедренный треугольник или трапеция. Форма такой огранки позволяет максимально рассмотреть камень внутри, и при этом все его включения и цвет. Даже если линии не параллельны, такая огранка все равно относится к ступенчатой.
Ступенчатой огранкой можно огранить любую форму: квадрат, прямоугольник, овал.
Сегодня применяется достаточно редко. Нижняя часть камня остается плоской, без граней, а верхняя часть имеет куполообразную форму, покрытую мелкими треугольными гранями. Верх такого камня в изделии «колюч». Если граней купола больше трех - ее уже можно называть "роза". Так гранили бриллианты в 1500 годы. К 1800 годам ее применяли в основном к гранатам и марказитам.
Если огранщик сочетает ступенчатую огранку и бриллиантовую, это называют миксом. Особенно актуально для цветных драгоценных камней, где самый важный критерий оценки - цвет. Такое сочетание огранок помогает раскрыть цвет и избежать затемнения в районе калеты.
До этого речь шла о способе расположения граней на камне. Но есть еще форма камня. Наиболее известные формы с собственными именами (кроме овальной и круглой):
Маркиз - вытянутый заостренный с двух сторон овал.
Бриолет - огранка в форме капли, объемная со всех сторон. Грани либо в форме треугольника, либо клинообразные как в бриллиантовой огранке.
Кушон - имеет форму квадрата или прямоугольника с заокругленными углами. Относится к бриллиантовому стилю огранки.
Ашер - имеет форму квадрата, или прямоугольника со срезанными углами и ступенчатую огранку.
Принцесса - имеет квадратную форму и бриллиантовый стиль огранки. Формально называется квадратной модифицированной брилиантовой огранкой.
Груша - имеет форму капли и бриллиантовый стиль огранки.
