A blog about miniatures and building miniature dollhouses.
Hi everyone, I had so much fun last month making my first house out of cardboard when I created the San Francisco House that I wanted to create another one from cardboard. I was inspired by this picture I found on the internet of an abandoned house that someone had drawn. When I started out this house had both sides, but it was to large of a house for what I wanted, so I cut the right side of the house off. This was one of my hardest designs to try to create since when I started looking at the inspiration picture that there was not one truly even square or realistic edge in the picture. The porch was also a challenge trying to create it from the picture but I think it turned out darn awesome. I think I spent about 2 weeks this May creating this Haunted Mansion and it was so much fun and enjoyable using the cardboard. Yes it kills my hands to do the Thousands of cuts to create the house but so worth it. I am loving Cardboard and love how I can design so much from it at a Low cost compared to using the fancy Expensive Wood that you have to buy at dollhouse shops. I spent one day alone creating the interior cardboard boxes and trash and newspapers for the interior, plus I didn't have any fireplaces to put into the home so I created some out of cardboard...lol.. I also am loving how the aged patina came out with the painting process of the house, which for the life of me I don't know if I can remember how to recreate it again. Again the use of cardboard made the house so light, but also so hard and sturdy. I hope you all like my newest creation. Have a Wonderful Month! Stan
Imagine my surprise to find this modern miniature structure at my local CB2 store! This sturdy model is called Neville House (although the box and tag say "Neville's House") and is made of engineered wood with pine veneer and walnut trim. It features floor to ceiling windows and doorways, a shed roof, porch and removable retro fireplace. It reminds me of those 21st Century Beach House Huts that I blogged about years ago. I am uncertain of the scale. It is smaller than 3/4 scale or 1:16. Maybe 1:24? Shrug. It measures 10.25"Wx9"Dx7.75"H. The doorways and windows are roughly 4 inches in height which makes it a bit tricky to place miniature furniture and accessories but it can be done. If you have smaller hands, you'll have no issues but I keep reaching for a pencil to give items a final tap into place. Also, the flooring inside the house looks like carpeting but is rough like sandpaper to the touch. If you decide not to use alternate flooring, you have to be gentle when placing items so that you don't scratch the more delicate miniatures. I actually remember this little house from CB2's Christmas catalog. It was featured on the cover as a prop. I had made a note to contact the company and ask them who made the model but I never did get around to it. I wonder if other people had inquired about the house and that is what got the ball rolling. Either way, I'm happy to see it now for sale. All in all, it's a cool little structure for $60 that is fun to play with and/or admire on a shelf. I hope they make a series of these... UPDATE: 7/1/11 I got the following reply from Crate and Barrel: The house was designed by one of our associates at our Corporate Office. We do not see any plans for other models, but we will definitely share your feedback about this. First, big kudos to the anonymous associate who isn't given public credit. You rock, whoever you are! And second, to everyone, please write CB2 and let them know you want to see more of these lovely modern architectural models! Additional image: CB2

I'm so amazed by these builds. They're gorgeous! So unique and interesting. I get so excited when I get this email. Miniatures.com has them all up, though I had trouble looking at one of the pictures of the Third Place entry. In first place, Crafter's Retreat by Karen Hritz I've got to say I love the details on the inside, but the exterior is just breathtaking! In second place, The Little Yoga Studio by Sarah Santosa Sarah is another first time entrant and I'm just amazed. I feel relaxed just looking at these pics. In third place, My Minka by Bonnie Cross That landscaping! Everything is just so pretty. I haven't had time yet to go searching for blogs or Instagram pages, I wanted to get the post up so I could show off all these great winners. I'll try to get everything updated with links as I find them. Congratulations everyone!

How To Make A Dollhouse Out Of Cardboard Is Something Quite Important In Times Of Ecological Challenges- A Small Tutorial And Examples
For the 2015 Eastern States Exposition in Massachusetts, LEGO offered visitors the chance to make-and-take a cow model, complete with rotating head and swinging tail. This is an official LEGO model, similar to the Americana Roadshow miniature buildings, but unless you attended the event in person, you may not have heard about it.
I called this newest dollhouse "In Tatters". It's another shabby chic style. This one has a little terrace to sip your morning coffee. I love the French style number above the door. They are Tim Holtz in the scrapbook area. http://www.michaels.com/tim-holtz-idea-ology-mini-plaquettes/10514419.html I added roses and leaves on the door. Paint over them with a few coats of paint and it looks like wood carvings. I used roses by Tim Holz. I usually make my own but wanted to try these out. It worked! Here's the link to them: http://www.hobbylobby.com/Scrapbook-Paper-Crafts/Embellishments/Flowers/Tim-Holtz-Cream-Heirloom-Roses/p/154805 The wires, battery and push switches are inside the chimney The fireplace has a working fire. The artist studio has plenty of light with the two huge windows. I did my "tin" ceiling using the hot glue technique. These are tiny seashells I collected in Florida. This is my favorite style of house to make for sure! This house is available in my Etsy shop. Okay back to work on more projects now. I'll see you very soon with a dining room set I've been working on.
In just 11 steps you can have this heavenly cabin on your land and enjoy it yourself AND start hosting paying visitors.
Working at 1:20 scale, artist Joshua Smith builds in-depth works that capture the layered existences of urban environments in cities such as Hong Kong, Sydney, and Los Angeles. His miniature buildings showcase the details and detritus left by the diverse population of each city, bringing in elements of the city’s workers, inhabitants, and street artists. These marks can be seen through heavily graffitied exteriors, and thoughtful additions like a small table on the roof of one building with takeout food from the tiny Chinese restaurant below. More
