Hello Everyone! It is so nice to have time to put some finishing touches on a couple of units that we have coming up! Another historical figure we will study after Eleanor Roosevelt is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As a nation we celebrate his life daily! Thank you Dr. King! Officially we celebrate on the third Monday of January. I have posted about our activities before, but I went through and cleaned up, and added to my unit. Here are some pics from the updated unit! If you would like the 30 page free printable unit CLICK HERE!! :) My second offering for today is a unit our curriculum team worked on this summer. We had fun integrating reading and social studies and are finding it a natural way to teach and get everything in. This next unit is about other important historical figures. It includes posters about Alexander Graham Bell, Ben Franklin, Thomas Edison, Garrett Morgan, and Richard Allen along with reading strategy practice activities. It also includes an invention home project packet for kids. The unit ended up to be over 50 pages! I am excited to include this unit in our curriculum in a few weeks!! Here are a few pics from the unit! For your free 52 page Inventors Unit CLICK HERE!! :) So glad I had time to share these endeavors! Hope you can use at least parts of either one! It is my joy to be able to share and help your journey in the classroom or homefront become a little less stressful. As always, please let me know if this is something you can use, if there are any typos or problems, and if you would like to see something else in particular on this little blog. I hear from teachers and parents from all over the world, and I am so grateful for all of you!! Joyfully! Nancy

Here's to another Sunday spent planning. The goal for next week is to get a few things planned before the weekend comes! To make this post a little shorter, I am breaking it into two parts. Tomorrow, I will share my reading and writing plans for some Minilesson Magic :) Science: This week, we have our mini-unit on genetics scheduled. Our students need to learn the following objectives: * Explain why organisms differ from or are similar to their parents based on the characterisitcs of the organism. * Give examples of likenesses that are inherited and some that are not. For my student journal pgs, click here (free and in a pdf). Monday: Set up science journals. The label shown above will be pasted into their notebook as a divider for our first unit of study. Complete the "Mice" assessment probe to see what students already think about how traits show up in organisms. After students think about their own explanations, we will use the explanations above to make a bar graph for how they think offspring's fur color is decided. (This assessment probe comes from Page Keeley, Uncovering Student Ideas in Science). Use 1st page of heredity video to explain heredity. Tuesday: Fingerprints Lab (found this gem linked for free online) Wednesday: Observing Human Traits Lab (free from Tamra Young on TPT); explain dominant and recessive traits and draw conclusions about what traits are dominant/recessive for humans based on classroom data) Thursday: Complete active sort around the room for Inherited vs Acquired traits and make flipbook (free materials from Jennifer Findley) Friday: Learn about Punnett Squares with Leprechaun Genetics (free from Making it Teacher on TPT) Other Resources that might be thrown in w/ extra time: Unit Outline from Moore County (includes a smartboard file to guide the mini-unit) Peas in a Pod (Mendelian Genetics) online freebie; Questions to go along with the reading selection included (I made these last year) Heredity (from Brainpop) DNA (from Brainpop) Animated Videos that explain DNA, genes, chromosomes, protein, heredity, and traits Math: This week in math, I will be getting to know my students better as mathematicians. I'm using some of the journal prompts/explorations from my Math Explorations that focuses on factors. (Not only will we learn about decomposing numbers, but students will be forced to use their multiplication facts). Since my Math Explorations are aligned with the mathematical practices, I thought it would be a good way to introduce concepts like communicating in math, perseverance, using multiple methods for showing work, using different strategies, etc. We are also going to continue working on our Summer Slide questions, which we started on Friday. Given time, I will also begin to introduce some of our math stations. For math stations, my team decided that we would have 4 stations this year, MATH SUPERSTARS, CONCEPT FOCUS, ALGEBRAIC, and something computer-based like Moby Max. Morning Meeting: We are going to focus on perseverance all week. We have a county-wide assessment that is designed with all tasks focusing on perseverance, so this fits in nicely with morning meeting. The kiddos may not even realize they are being assessed. Finish Strong Erik Weihenmayer on Oprah (start at 1:21) Hope you enjoyed peeking at my week! Tune in tomorrow for my reading/writing minilesson ideas for the week.

Dimensional Analysis - so valuable for success in middle and high school math and science courses, yet so under-emphasized in our classrooms today! Middle school teachers lament their students' inability to work successfully with measures and rates of varying units. High school teachers voice concerns regarding the fact that their Chemistry and Physics students enter these courses with no background in how to use units to help solve simple to sophisticated word problems. With this in mind, this product has two targeted audiences: (1) middle school math classrooms, addressing Common Core standards related to ratios, rates, and moving between different units of measure and (2) high school sophomore and junior science classrooms, providing a valuable review / crash course in basic dimensional analysis before students begin to work with joules, moles, newtons, calories, etc. Follow the instructions and use these materials step-by-step, and students in either audience will soon not only have the process of using dimensional analysis mastered, but also recognize how valuable it is in simplifying and providing clarity for complicated math and science problems. Complete implementation of this product will take from three to five days, depending upon the prior knowledge and level of ability of the class. This product is broken down into three “days” of materials (it is left to the teacher to determine whether a “day” really takes a day, or perhaps a day and a half). Each “day” of materials consists of: 1. A “Warm-up” activity. This activity includes of 1 – 5 math problems (with detailed keys for teacher use) and serves three purposes: - To briefly review prior concepts. - To get the students’ creative juices flowing for the day. - To provide a difficult but enticing problem which makes the students want to ask questions and learn more of the content of this mini-unit. 2. Two “Guided Notes” pages. These pages provide an avenue for the students to take notes, ask questions, practice concepts, and have rich discussion under the guidance of the teacher. A detailed key is provided for the teacher, who then works with the students to fill in the various sections of the notes page (poetically entitled the “Review”, the “New”, the “How to Do”, and the “Practice for You”!), asking and answering questions and incorporating discussion along the way. 3. The “Worksheet” for the day. Each of the worksheets are two pages, with increasing level of rigor, both within each worksheet and from one worksheet to the next. Detailed keys are provided so that the teacher may first assist the students and then review the worksheets with them in detail. Good luck in your use of the Dimensional (Unit) Analysis! Related Products: This product is a follow-on product to Ratios, Rates, and Proportions Galore, which provides everything you need to introduce students to ratio, rate, unit rate, and proportion concepts and ensure they understand and retain them! If you are interested in a more advanced real-world of application of proportions, please see The Outdoor Lesson. This product instructs students on how to use proportions and properties of similar figures to find heights of outdoor objects using indirect measurement.
