These mittens were inspired by vintage Russian embroidery. These traditionally shaped mittens feature a modern thumb for added comfort and durability. You’ll need less than one skein of each color to finish this project. Materials: White - 170 yards / 156 meters Black - 100 yards / 92 meters Red - 90 yards / 83 meters I would suggest knitting this project inside out, which helps keep the tension more even with three colors in each round. Knit this in the suggested colors for a classic look or mix it up with your own colors for a fun twist. Update: Matching hat is now available! Save $2 at checkout when purchasing both patterns together. Offer applies to Ravelry users who previously purchased a pattern in the set.

For many years, on the longest and darkest night of the winter, the 21st of December, I have been gathering a group of women together with a friend. In the light of fires and torches, we have been performing ancient dances to live music in the snow to curse the darkness and make the light return. We use fire to shine for ourselves, for each other and for the world. My mittens are called Shine to remind us that we can spread light to each other and let the world shine. Shine is a mitten made in stranded knitting with latvian braids on the cuff. I wanted to design a mitten in swedish wool inspired by traditional patterns. Mittens in these kinds of patterns used to be knitted on very thin needles. In that way they become durable and warm. The pattern also looks better when tightly knit so that you can use more stitches. I knit my mittens in a swedish wool yarn (300m/100g) on needles 2,0mm. Circumference: 20cm Length: adjustable (Of course you can adjust the size by using different yarn and needles.) Needles: 2,0mm or needles to obtain gauge Yarn: 2ply 100% wool yarn 300m/100g Colour A (yellow) 50g Colour B (white) 50g Gauge 34stitches x 36rounds = 10 x 10cm in stranded knitting I knit my mittens on double pointed needles. Of course you can also use a longer circular needle and the magic loop method if you would prefer that.
Latvian traditional mittens knitting pattern - Nīca, Kurzeme region. The colour pattern contains 2 PDF files - A3 size pattern/chart for the mittens you may see on the photo and A4 size knitting description in English and also I include 2 photos of the finished mittens. Although the text is in English, the chart is clear and self explaining. The pattern is designed for an experienced knitter. Knit as all the knitters before - one stitch at a time :)

OLE Mittens // KNITTING INSTRUCTIONS (in German and English) Classic mittens - are known to keep your hands warmest and are the perfect companion for cold days. The OLE Mittens are knitted in English rib with yarn overs from bottom to top. To ensure that the half patent pattern does not have too many holes, a relatively thin needle size of 3.0 mm is used. After the cuff, a thumb wedge is worked in with the help of increases inclined to the left or right. This ensures a good fit and enough room for movement. The tip of the gloves is formed with double decreases inclined to the left and right. Techniques used: Italian stitch cast on (optional), half rib with yarn overs, left and right inclined increases, left and right inclined double decreases. / Language: German ENGLISH / Level: Advanced / Size: S(M)L Glove size: (5-6) 6.5-7.5 (8-8.5) Hand circumference: 16-17 (18-20) 21-22 cm The circumference of the hand is measured with a tape measure. It is measured at the widest part of the hand; the thumb is not included. / material 100 (100) 100 g Rowan 'Alpaka Soft DK' (70% virgin wool, 30% alpaca; LL 125 m/ 50 g), here in color 'Toffee' or 100 (100) 100 g Pascuali Filati Naturali 'Tibetan' (70% virgin wool, 30% yak wool; LL 125 m/ 50 g) / Needles: Needle play 3.0 mm / Gauge In the half rib: 23 sts x 50 rows = 10 x 10 cm (washed and measured lying down) When counting the rows, note that due to the half rib pattern, only 1 st appears for every 2 rows worked. / Accesories Sewing needle, stitch marker if necessary, safety pin for holding the thumb stitches Instructions for private individuals only. I always had a fascination with greek and classicism architecture. I used a round-meander pattern for the mittens and a checked pattern for the palm part. When knitting both mittens in the same colours you can hold them together to get the effect of the meander pattern flowing from one mitten to another. The pattern is written for the magic loop method but is easily converted for using DPN. The colouwork is given as charts. Size : Women S, M, L (6, 7, 8 inches / 15, 18, 20 cm hand circumstances) Needles : 3.5mm (US 4) and 4.0mm (US 6) needles, either for magic loop or DPNs. Yarn : Sportweight yarn in main and contrast colour, 100yards each. Difficulty : workin in round, stranded colourwork, increasing in colourwork.
This listing is for a PDF knitting pattern, not for a finished knitted item!! This nature-inspired pattern is recommended for intermediate-level knitters who have experience with stranding and working from charts. Size: Women’s medium Yarn: Fingering or sock weight yarn in two contrasting colors. The mittens require approximately 160 yards of each Needles: US size 2 (2.75mm) or size needed to obtain gauge - You may use DPNs or a circular needle if using Magic Loop method Gauge: 10 stitches and 10 rows = 1” Notions: Waste yarn, darning needle, stitch marker (optional) Finished measurements: Approximately 10” in length and 8” circumference around the fingers The following skills are required: • Long-tail cast-on • Knitting in the round using DPNs or the Magic Loop method • Two-color stranding • Basic increases (make one stitch) • Basic decreases (K2tog, SSK) • Backward loop cast-on • Picking up stitches All sales final.

The easiest and the quickest gloves to make are mittens, especially knitted mittens. Take a look at these fantastic projects below!
My Sheepish Mittens were inspired by the happy sheep on my cousin’s farm - Topsy Farms - on Amherst Island in Ontario, Canada. The yarn I used comes from their sheep and is processed in a small mill on Prince Edward Island. The mittens are knitted in the round using two colour stranded knitting. The shaped thumb gore makes for a well fitting and comfortable mitten while the two yarns give a nice warm fabric. There are two sizes - the small is slender and the large is wider and is designed to be worn over another pair of thin mittens for extra warmth. The pattern includes complete instructions and charts. This knitting pattern is suitable for experienced or adventurous intermediate knitters. You will need about 140 yards (130 m) of a dark coloured fingering weight yarn and about 120 yards (110 m) of a light coloured fingering weight yarn. Suggested yarn is Topsy Farms Fingering yarn. Gauge 31 stitches and 38 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) The suggested needle size is 2.25 mm or US size 1. This is a digital download. You will receive a PDF file that will print on 8 1/2' by 11" paper (letter). You will NOT receive a paper pattern in the mail. Sorry, no refunds on digital products if you have already downloaded the file.
