2017 Topic 17: Shades of White Hitomi Hosono Well hello everyone, Darcy here with a new topic. How time is flying, we are up to Topic 17 already. I am sure you are all fully immersed in the deep, rich tones of Autumn, but winter is not far away and soon we will be turning to all things white, so to prepare you for those winter whites our new topic is called 'Shades of White' Before we start, let's see who won the Topic 16: Rust Challenge... The winner is: Pavla from PavlArt Email Darcy to claim your prize. [email protected] I think this might, at first, appear to be one of our most challenging topics, not in a difficult way, but more that it will really make you think about your project. What can you create with shades of white, what message can you convey, and how will you go about it. Also, how, or will you be able to, resist adding other colours? White is associated with quiet, calm, light, innocence, peace and purity, it almost always looks clean (scary I know) and is generally a positive colour. It can look serene and gentle but can equally be energetic, tactile and full of emotion. The PaperCutter Just how many shades of white are there? Next time you are in a DIY shop, have a look at their paint chips you will be astounded at how many whites there are. Winter white, snow white, smoke white, cream, eggshell, old lace, ivory, linen, antique white, off-white, baby powder, chalk, white peony, white whisper, ultra white, meringue, paper lantern, frost, moon, iceland, chantilly, and so on. For the most part, in isolation they will all look just white, it is only when you layer them up that you can see the subtle differences. So layering is a great way to treat a shades of white project. Even using the same white paper, once layered, can give you great shadows, which in turn make various areas of white pop more. Joey Bates How about a tiny house in a champagne glass, this would be wonderful for a wedding gift or as a new home gift. Helen Musselwhite Not only are there lots of whites, but there are many surface treatments too, look back over previous topics, we have had pearlescent and metallic, both of those work beautifully with white. At PaperArtsy we have Pearl glaze and Metallic glaze to accentuate your whites, look at another topic, Glitter, clear and white glitters whether fine or chunky, will dramatically change your work. Debby4000 So you have pulled out all your whites, you have them layered and you added glitter, how else can we create differences? Texture; this is always a wonderful addition. I love collecting wallpaper samples, there are some great embossed wallpapers, don't forget about handmade papers too, there are some yummy ones. You could of course make your own paper! What about texture paste, PaperArtsy Grunge paste is a perfect base to add interest, but can also be added to subsequent layers. Vito Capone Other textures you could introduce would be fabric, perhaps muslin (cheesecloth) for softness, or satin for a smooth sheen, silk for a touch of delicate, or velvet for cosiness and luxury. Livingontheedge Don't forget you can add all manner of embellishments such as embroidery and buttons. This is a gorgeous way to bring snowflakes indoors. Yvonne Pratt Often vintage ephemera will be all different shades of white as it yellows over the years, look for old book pages, vintage fabrics and lace, old faded photographs. Kasia Avery Here you can see papers and fabrics all layered together, held in place by both delicate and bold stitches. DJ Pettitt Other fragile papers will also add dimension and interest, think about using tracing paper, vellum, tissue paper, music paper or deli paper, layer up all those thin papers to create a great base without bulk. Gristello Maybe you are staring at a blank white page and thinking it looks intimidating enough without adding even more white, how on earth can i even start this project? Why not try starting with coloured pages, add paint or gesso or layers of paper and create your white masterpiece. How much of your colour can you cover up, that will be a challenge eh? Druga Szesnascie Another double spread here where book pages have been whitewashed with either diluted paint or gesso, (dilute just enough so that the pages underneath can still be seen) then the top layer is thicker paint through a stencil, a great way to layer and add a little texture. Oliver Jeffers I always think these seed pods from the Lunaria plant are so ethereal, if you can find these dried out they would add gorgeous dimension to your project. Burpee As if by magic, here is a mixed media piece combining old dressmakers patterns, white paint and lunaria seeds. Anca Gray The above artist, Anca Gray, has some very interesting things on her blog, lots of use of whites and neutral shades, great inspiration. I adore these pieces stitched together, what could you hide inside those panels? If you look carefully you can see that she has hidden wordfetti under the stitched panels. check out her blog for more inspiration. Anca Gray If you fancy yourself as a fashionista you could put on a 'brave face' and go for this all white outfit! Viktor and Rolf If you are looking to redecorate a space in your home then this might inspire, although the background wall is coloured you can see just how much light has been introduced by the large white mounts within the frames. From a full wall to tiny ornaments, how about some pebble painting. Shop pod I shall leave you with something very tasty, how is this for a beautifully tiered cake. Hall of Cake I hope those examples have inspired, I have to say I had a relaxing time searching for photos. I think they show that shades of white can be beautiful and peaceful but also very exciting. Have a wonderful two weeks of creating. Don't forget to follow Darcy and Leandra's Pinterest boards if this topic pushes your buttons, you will see plenty more examples to whet your appetite there! His body of work explores the notions of urban expansionism, capitalism and how individuals define themselves in an increasingly overloaded sensorial environment. Hello Dear Friends! My super talented Brand Ambassadors have a very special treat for you today - again! :) April is the Stress Awareness Month and this theme provoked some really touching stories from our Artists - raw and honest both in their artmaking and sharing their personal views. I'm truly blessed to be cooperating with these exceptional ladies... How can art be a way to deal with various difficult situations in our lives? Do you ever create when you need healing or having an outlet to your emotions? How can you use art to unwind, get grounded and reconnect with yourself? You'll love our Aritsts' beautiful 'gallery' of Art and Soul! * GAYLE * Stress and anxiety are a part of everyone’s life to a lesser or greater degree. Managing it can be tricky, and many things can help, ranging from how much sleep we have, what we eat, exercise, meditation and the list can go on. Art, or some form of creative activity, is for me a huge help in managing stress. In particular I love the process of collage. Sometimes all I need to do is look at my stash of coloured and patterned papers; to pick them up, admire them, sort them and be inspired by them. :) The actual process of collage making I find to be very relaxing and therapeutic. Choosing, cutting, arranging, glueing, and smoothing out paper can be quite a meditative process and a definite de-stresser. Choosing papers with images, colours and patterns that “talk to you”, that you just love, and collaging them into a journal without even having a plan or any kind story in mind can be very relaxing as well as distracting you from anxious or stressful thoughts. In this collage I have used some of my favourite patterned papers, tissue, paper napkins, gift wrap and Japanese paper. More pattern has been added with Finnabair's stamps and stencils (some old favourites of mine) using 3D Gel and the new Plaster Paste. * LOUISE * Creativity has always been an outlet for me for a variety of reasons, right from when I was very young. I have very strong childhood memories of badly wanting to be able to draw and paint like my artistic mother, to try gain her favour and love. Then when I was in school it became a way of me being accepted and liked. As the 'fat kid' in school it was hard to be accepted and recognised for something other than being fat. Creativity gave me a voice and an identity that wasn't one that brought me shame and pain. As I got older and started working, I lost touch with my creative self. I became passionate about my career, so much so that I became completely overwhelmed and totally stressed. A chance invitation by a work colleague to join her and her friends for a scrapbooking day led to me eventually changing my perspective on life and seeking relief from the stress of my work. One thing lead to another and now I have embraced a life and lifestyle that allows me to embrace my creative passions. I now invest the same love and passion I had for my career into my art. My Art is my Voice. My Voice is my Art. I am my Art. My Art is Me. One final word; my painting features a word which has meaning for me. Meraki - (v.) to do something with Soul, creativity, or love; to put something of yourself in your work. * RIIKKA * Creating is my outlet. If I'm really stressed, I just need to put my fingers to paints and I immediately feel better. Creating is my escape to another world, a balancing act from everyday and all the 'musts' and 'to dos'. Also if I'm sad or angry, my first go to is talking to my husband but after that, I start a project. If something even comes from it as it's usually just playing with mediums, I never share it. That project is done totally for me. For this post we were asked to create something uplifting. The idea of this project came from a couple of things. The first was the "Art Jar" - an online event from sweet Eliza. I've not done the workshop but the idea of an inspiring jar captivated me. It's like a cabinet of curiosities in miniature form! The other inspiration was the song from Sound of Music about favorite things. I started thinking that if you are really sad or need uplifting a one time thing might not do the trick. But if you can have an uplifting thought or some reminder that there's a reason to be happy, it might help. Like the little things mentioned in the song. So I gathered some inspiring quotes from the web and made them into a pdf (feel free to use!) which I then cut to strips and added to an altered Melange Pebble jar. That way you can grab a little bit of sunshine whenever in need! :) * KASSA * The healing role of art is very close to my heart and it's something I only discovered last year when my lovely Leonberger boy Leo passed suddenly and threw my whole world upside down... I felt I couldn't breathe, he'd left a big hole in my heart that I did not know how to fill. Not long after I had a project to do up over here on Finnabair's blog and I thank my lucky stars for that because it literally forced me to put paint to paper and YES I lost myself and my sadness for a few hours... Once I'd finished my artwork, my soul was smiling, my soul poured onto the page, my hands an extension of my heart... In this piece I was at the start of a happy day, hence the sunny, happy colors, then unexpectedly someone unintentionally upset me to tears (I'm a sensitive chick). In the past |I would have found a quiet place to lick my wounds, now I carry on making art and throw my emotions onto the page... You can probably see the clouds covering my rainbow of Impasto paints, the flashes of white splatters where I'm reasoning and balancing things in my head, then there's the black confused dusty blurs and my favourite bold black 'slashes' - that's me getting cross with myself for letting myself down and being too sensitive... I throw a few splats of neon at it and scribble some crazy Gelato color to keep the black slashes at bay.... I win! I feel better so I write a few words with a marker pen over the page of my gratitude for this time to heal... to feel better... and I really do love everything about these emotional pages, they speak volumes to me... I trust in my hands that are an extension of my heart to paint... I am so grateful for that! * * * * Let's all feel inspired by today's post and - Happy Creating Everybody! :) Love what you make and use all the wonderful tools and media to express yourselves, especially when you feel blue or stressed - Art is the way! :) Finn & The Team

Hi everyone hope you're all well today! Popping on to share a canvas that I've made as a charity raffle prize which was originally going to be modeled on my art book design here. After going through my images I found this image which included a nurse which was perfect for the Macmillen cancer support charity coffee morning that a friend is holding. The image dictated the colour scheme and style which is very far away from the style of my original idea. I may still make a canvas based on the art book at some point as it's one of my favourite entries so far. I painted my background first with a mixture of Williamsburg blue and Lemonade green Deco-art paints and then added the image by the gel transfer method. After that I took a Ronda Palazzari feather stencil and spread some glass bead paste through it around the edges fanning them out towards the canvas edges. I did a bit of stamping around the canvas in black with a Kaisercraft music and script stamp and in white paint with a dictionary stamp then I went on to add a piece of wide lace that I'd sprintzed with colour and all the flowers. Some of the flowers I made myself with the Tim Holtz tattered florals die and tyvek fabric which I coloured with the same blue paint as the background and shaped with heat. There are lots of Frantage Embossing Enamels added around the canvas: aged gold, shabby white, aged red, aged black, shabby blue and I added a painted Ideology metal sentiment band at the bottom right. I spritzed the canvas a little bit with some Dylusions spray inks, mainly the white dragged a bit of the Lemonade paint over the flowers here and there. I've also added some pearl pen pearls and inked around the edges and over the top of the canvas in black ink. If you've read to the bottom of this post..............I like you very much :D. Enjoy your day.

This summer is for many of us extremely hot. But we can enjoy summer evenings in the garden, beautiful sunsets and gorgeous flowers. Find even short break in your daily routine and treat yourself with anything summer offers us <3 That will charge our batteries for long, cold Winter season. Our design team created projects inspired by our moodboard. Hi dears! So now the holiday time is over for me and it's time to get back to work. I always need notebooks. I have made one that I can carry in my bag and have with me during meetings. So I it is the one without so much embellishments. There is so much inspiration everywhere - and this time I found my inspiration right here at Mixed Media Place from the gorgeous and talented Ola Khomenok. So Ola's notebook from the June Challenge is my inspiration. I have a video for you, so you can watch my process. Xoxo Katja Mixed Media Supplies: Hello, everyone! I love to create floral projects, to add some flowers, leaves and fussy cut elements, to make it looks romantic and soft. Our August Mood board gave me an opportunity to make such a project. I took the main picture from the Mood board and added some lovely elements, made mixed media background using one of my favorite pastes - Snowflake Paste by Finnabair. It is very textural and glittering, so it is also perfect for romantic projects. I prepared a video-tutorial for you and I hope you like it. Wish you happy crafting! Mixed Media Place supplies: Hello friends! Someone will see the flowers and the end of summer looking at our moodboard, but my thoughts are still about the sea. And the work is also about it and about one of its inhabitants. I decided to play with the contrast of bright background colors and a black-white photo of the jellyfish. An excellent basis for the background was a resist canvas, various types of which you can find in the MMP store. I applied acrylic paints mixed with water and after drying them I applied modeling paste through stencil. A little different decor(including my favorite metal embellishments)and now you can think about the black jellyfish is a fact or fiction)) I prepared a video tutorial for you: Mixed Media Place supplies: I really in love with this amazing mood board! This inspired me to create a canvas with a door :) I have this door mold for a while, but I have never used it before :). Below you can find also my video. In this tutorial you'll see how to use a Rust Pastes instead of acrylic paints. From time to time I love to use them as I show in my video, because they have nice texture and beautiful vintage looking colors. Mixed Media Place supplies: * * * * * * * * * * Join our new challenge! We love to see your beautiful creations! You have time to play with us until September 19th. Hello Everyone!! Happy June 1st!! I am beyond thrilled to share my first project as a design team member for Mixed Media Monthly Challenge! Today is the launch of our exciting new blog so please stop by and check it out! This month's theme is Sprays Inks and Mists. We would LOVE for you to play along with us!! You can create ANY project as long as you use ink sprays or mists. Entries will be accepted until midnight EST on the last day of the month. Several winners will be announced and you have an opportunity to win FABULOUS prizes! I decided to create a tag using items I have in my stash - anything goes ... old jewelry, bottle cap, beads, flowers, paper clips - anything! I glued some textured materials to the tag and then prepped the tag with gesso. Next, I adhered all my items ... I then repainted gesso over the entire tag. This made the tag uniform in color... I have recently discovered the beauty of Lindy's Stamp Gang Sprays. They are gorgeous - beautiful shimmer like you wouldn't believe. So I grabbed 5 colors and sprayed them on the tag drying in between each color so they wouldn't run together. The sprays sit and pool in some areas and they way the interact with the different textures is amazing. Here's the final result ... We hope you will participate with us each month. Head on over to the MMMC Blog and check the inspiration from the whole team and a guest designer - there is a variety of projects all showcasing different ways to use sprays in your art!
Hi all! I'm so happy to share with you today a canvas I made using Fall leaves, some Gesso and a few Shimmerz Paints products! Winter has come way to fast this year and I wanted to get this Autumn project done before there weren't any usable leaves left on the ground. I managed to find a few after doing a little hunting around in my backyard. These are the Shimmerz products I used on this project: ~ Punked Up Purple Coloringz ~ Treasured Hymn Spritz ~ Hot Fudge Vibez ~ Bamboo Leaf Spritz ~ Tuscan Sun Spritz ~ Oh Say Can U Sea Coloringz ~ Miner Miner 49er Inklingz I made up a Video Tutorial to go with this canvas design....Enjoy!.... Here are a couple more views of this canvas.... I just love the effect the gold 'Miner Miner 49er' Inklingz gives to the leaf and relief parts of the canvas. One of the cool things about Inklingz is that as you let the water sit in the paint cake, and the more you stir, the thicker and more luxurious the paint becomes. Then it's easy to 'dry brush' the metalic gold effect on your raised surfaces of your canvas design. I hope you enjoyed today's project and will give it a go either in these colors or your own favorite color combination! REMEMBER....If you go to the SHIMMERZ STORE to or some of these yummy goodies, be sure to mention my name in the 'Instructions to Merchant....or message to seller' part of your order and you will receive a FREE/Bonus Shimmerz product in the color of your choice! xo
