Butte, Montana is probably most famous for being home to the Berkeley Acid Pit, an open lake of toxic sludge that formed after a mining incident (it even has an observation deck and gift shop). But while you're checking out the barren views at the acid pit, if you turn your eyes to the mountains, you'll see a site that's a little more, well... hopeful. From the Berkeley Pit, Our Lady of the Rockies is only a faint white nub among the massive peaks of the Rocky Mountains, but if you take some time to get a little closer, you'll learn that not only is the statue impressively tall, but it also has a touching story to go along with it. It all started in 1979. Butte resident Bob O'Bill's wife was seriously ill with cancer, and the two needed a miracle. Bob offered a prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary that he would build a 5-foot statue of her in his yard if his wife recovered. His prayers were answered and his wife's cancer went into remission... and so O'Bill began to plan to make good on his promise-- but he didn't exactly stick to his word. Instead of a 5-foot statue in his yard, he had begun to imagine something much grander and more impressive: a 90-foot tall beheamoth on top of a mountain. Of course, none of it would have been possible without some help, and O'Bill was very lucky on this front. A friend named Joe Roberts donated a plot of land on the mountains right along the Continental Divide, and another buddy engineered the design of the statue-- a crucial element, since it needed to be able to withstand the strong winds up on the peak. Still others were needed to help blast a road up the mountain. Even the concrete for the base was donated, and the huge statue was flown in four pieces to the site by the Army National Guard. While the Our Lady Of The Rockies is technically a statue of Mary, the mother of Jesus, people from all religions and walks of life contributed to the project, and the nondenominatioal memorial was dedicated to mothers everywhere-- and many even considered it a monument to hope in a town that, right as the statue was built, was suffering from economic hardship as mining companies left. You can even go inside the statue-- but be prepared to be moved: the walls are covered in letters and mementos left their by visitors in memory of their loved ones. If you have a special intention in mind, you can bring along a little something to leave with Our Lady of the Rockies and you can rest assured that she will take good care of it. Even if you aren't in it for the inspirational story, the statue is definitely still worth a visit. It's currently the third tallest statue in America (behind the Statue of Liberty and this massive monument of Pegasus killing a dragonin-- where else?-- Florida) but its perch high above Montana makes it quite the landmark-- it can be seen from miles and miles away. That also means that visiting it up close and in person means that you'll get some truly epic views of the Rockies. The only way to get there is to hop on a shuttle bus to the statue that leaves from the Butte Plaza Mall (convenient, since it leaves everyone better able to take in the scenery on the ride up). But it's just as comforting to know that pretty much wherever you are in Butte, she'll be watching over you, just in case you need anything. -Roadtrippers Our Lady Of The Rockies is a 90-foot (27 m) statue, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, that sits atop the Continental Divide overlooking Butte, Montana.
