Finally, I had a chance to put together a post with all the recent finishes. There is a little bit of everything in this post! This Happy Zoo Animals quilt is the 75th quilt we made from the block drive. This one has been out getting the binding sewn on by Chris. I don't think this will be the last zoo animal quilt we see; I think there is a still a small stack of blocks. I love, love, love this backing fabric that Helen sent in. This quilt measures 48" x 54". Next up is this lovely green and coral patchwork quilt. Kat (Covered in Love) had sent me a box of smaller bits of fabric that she wasn't sure if she would use and inside were a number of 10" squares from about three fabric collections. I thought they would all work together so I just ended up sewing them all together. No cutting required! I had a nice rosy pink fabric that Deana found for me at a local estate sale that worked for the backing. This quilt measures 50" x 60". Last week, I also received a couple quilts from local quilter Laura. Nancy sent in this colorful scrappy quilt top. I love the swirl pattern Laura quilted on it. A bright surprise on the back. Nann had sent me a bunch of fun vintage fabrics eons ago and this one looked great on this quilt. This quilt measures 40" x 56". This quilt actually started as some orphan blocks also sent in by Nancy. In the same box she sent me some yardage of the background fabric. It didn't take me long to turn those blocks into this sweet 50" square quilt. I sent it Laura to quilt it. She always does such a great job! On the back, I went with this starry blue fabric. I did have to turn part of the fabric on its side but I don't think too many people will notice. Here is another quilt top sent in by Nancy. The brown and pink really make a sweet quilt. She also sent in this super soft flannel for the back. This quilt is about 36" square. There should be a lot to share again next week. I am hoping to receive some more finished quilts from the longarm quilters. Plus, I have a big stack of quilts ready for me to sew on the binding. Also, in case you missed it, I announced the next block drive in the last post. We are going two-stepping! Are you familiar with the quilting term leaders and enders? Maybe you’ve heard it before, but just weren’t sure what it meant. These terms refer to the use of a scrap piece of fabric that is placed under the foot of your machine to start (prior to chain piecing, sewing blocks or rows together, etc
This quilt was part of an exhibition of quilts called 'Hands across the Border - Hanging Together' in 2007 from the Irish Patchwork Society and the Northern Ireland Patchwork Guild. For more information see www.irishpatchwork.ie and www.nipg.org.uk
I initially thought this quilt was from the 1940s but realized upon inspection it is much older - the fabrics date to 1900- 1910. It is in INCREDIBLE condition for age, I don't know how. I'm thinking the reason it is in such good condition is that it was made more recently but with older fabrics. It is entirely handmade, each little piece is hand sewn to the other. The fabrics mesh perfectly together. Size: 75 x 82 Has very few defects, basically just what you see in the photos - a tiny age spot or two. This is a quilt top, not a finished quilt. So keep in mind it needs batting and backing and quilting still. Will be a very nice and likely valuable piece if finished correctly with hand work (not machine quilting).
Charm packs are one of the most popular precut quilting fabrics for good reason. The versatile size makes it a great starting point for quilt patterns. The 5″ precut squares are so popular, that many pattern designers create patterns to work with the precut squares. I’ve compiled a list of 40 free charm pack quilt...

This quilt is fun to make and comes together quickly. Simple squares and strips create a zipper pattern down your quilt. You can use precuts (a jelly roll or a layer cake) or scraps. Add yardage for your accent squares and you’re ready to create a unique throw. Directions are for a throw (52 by 72 inches) but you could easily make a larger quilt by adding more rows. This is a beginner friendly pattern. The pictures show a purple quilt top made from a jelly roll and a pink quilt top made from a Moda Love Notes Layer Cake. You could also make this quilt from your own 2 1/2 inch strips, scraps, or fat quarters. It's so exciting to see the squares come together. This fast quilt makes a great gift or charity quilt.

Using ties as a form of quilting requires little more than a thread and needle to create a series of knots to hold the different layers of the quilt together.

The perfect modern accent to your favorite cozy space, this gorgeous quilt has been handmade by me from the highest quality materials. I've had this contemporary pattern custom printed onto a seamless piece of fabric making this a “whole cloth” quilt-- the patterned top is one continuous piece, not many small pieces sewn together. It's backed in a super soft light gray cotton blend, machine bound in it, too. You have your choice of several backing colors at checkout; if you'd like your quilt backed in a color not listed, just let me know in the Message to Seller box and I'll get it for you. I quilted all over the top in a meandering loopy pattern which adds to its vintage feel. If you're looking for a traditionally pieced quilt, I'd love to make one for you; please feel free to reach out, or you can check my "Traditionally Pieced" section here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/OutOfCharacterQuilts?ref=seller-platform-mcnav§ion_id=46334629 You have TWO FABRIC OPTIONS for the patterned top of your quilt: DOUBLE GAUZE: 100% cotton double gauze is often called "muslin" and is commonly used in baby blankets and swaddles because of its lightness and breathability. The weaving together of two layers of gauze creates a material that is incredibly lightweight and airy yet strong; it's also a coarser natural fabric so it has a more rustic look and feel. The double gauze version of this quilt is extra crinkly and measures approximately 66" x 50". Again, this version is very lightweight. Because of its looser weave, double gauze isn't recommended for pets with sharp nails. MINKY: Minky is a polyester-blended plush fabric; it's a cuddly, silky soft blend that triumphs over comparable fabric options in every way. Warm and durable, it boasts an unrivaled thick plushness that is soothing and cozy. The minky version is approximately 70" x 54". The colors are bolder, and the quilt itself is much heavier. If you're looking for a heftier, warmer quilt, this is the best option for you. The photos of the minky version are labeled "minky" in this listing's photos. Both versions are gorgeous and striking in their own way. Throw it over your favorite reading chair and you'll do more reading. Fold it over the end of your bed and you'll find yourself sleeping better. Spread it on the floor for your baby to happily roll around on and you'll do more laughing, picnicking, tickling, and snuggling. These are all sound guarantees. The larger double gauze version is shown thrown over the foot of a standard queen-sized bed in the listing photos, but it is not sized to be actual bedding. Machine wash warm. Tumble dry low. Gets even better with time. The rustic nature of muslin means that there are often natural variances in the weave of the fabric. I just wanted to post some photos of my progress. I finished quilting two quilts last year that I failed to post on the blog. This quilt is Deana's pattern called Shimmer Braid. I finished the top a long time ago, but just recently finished quilting it. I quilted this on my home machine and I did a lot of quilting on it--probably too much, but I am happy with the way it turned out. The next quilt is my Optical Illusion Mystery Quilt. It has been pieced and waiting to be quilted even longer than the Shimmer Braid. It's a very different quilt, and I really struggled quilting it, but I learned a lot about machine quilting on a domestic machine on this quilt. My goal for last year was to get caught up on my quilting so that I could always just have one quilt on the frames being basted, one quilt being quilted and one quilt being pieced, and no other unfinished quilts. I like to have more than one quilt to work on so that I don't get too bored. When I finished quilting the Shimmer Braid I reached that goal. I finished piecing my New York Beauty before the end of the year, but for some reason I failed to take a photo of the finished quilt top, so I just took a photo of it on the quilt frames being basted. Here are the three quilts I'm currently working on. This top has been waiting for a long, long time to be quilted. I decided it was time to something a little more simple this time and I am enjoying putting together a quilt that goes together quickly. Linking up with: TGIFF

Chinese coins, 1930's repros framed blocks Top completed 2024 70 by 50 inches 35 blocks Blocks finish 10 inches Scraps are 1930's/40's repros, plus a few vintage scraps of my mother, all from my bins of cut down scraps. (One of the bins I sort scraps into is 30's repros rectangles 1 1/2 by 2 1/2 inches. So no cutting needed for this quilt other than the blue frames.) The blue is Kona Harbor (love the 1940's feel this color gives to the scraps) Block A Block BBlock A (18 blocks) 18 scraps 1 1/2 by 2 1/2 inches (((324 for quilt))) Frame: two rectangles 2 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches, two rectangles 2 1/2 by 10 1/2 inches (((36 each for quilt))) Block B (17 blocks) 50 scraps 1 1/2 by 2 1/2 inches (((850 for quilt))) SO, 1174 scrap rectangles total for this quilt. Process: I sewed into 587 twos I set aside 139 of the twos. The remainder, 448, were sewed into 224 fours. (This is not how I actually work--I sew twos until I am tired of it, then fours, etc. I count up when they are at the fours stage. I always think I am way over; I am always under and need to make more.) Block A I took 54 of the fours and added a two to each making 54 sixes. These units were pressed with all seams going one direction. I sewed these into 18 blocks of three units, flipping the center unit so all seams nest. I added the frames onto these. The short sides frames were pressed to the frames. The top and bottom frames were pressed north (this helps with nesting later). Block B The remaining 170 fours were sewn into 85 eights. A two was sewn onto each of these to make tens. These units were pressed with all seams going in one direction. 5 units were sewn into blocks, flipping every other unit so all seams nest. Joining blocks Orient the Block B so the outer seams are pressed south and it will nest into Block A with its sashing seams pressed north. Sew in rows and press rows north. My design, use at your pleasure. I am trying to make smaller quilts so my initial sketch was for 63 blocks coming to 70 by 90. I scaled back to 34 blocks coming to 50 by 70. It is hard for me to work smaller. My beloved Bernina 830 take-up lever broke off. I gently packed it for repairs and brought out this lovely Bernina 930 I had in reserve. I wisely purchased it about three years ago during the lock down from a man moving out of town. $350. At the time I tested it to make sure it worked, bought what was missing (case, flatbed, accessories box, manual) and it went into the closet. I needed to get to know the machine so I chose this project from my sketchbook as I knew there would be lots of repetitive sewing. I already had the scraps cut to size, so this was a pleasant sew. And I fell in love with this machine.

Okay, okay... I am a month late for a mid-year recap of our Monthly Mini Quilt series. Did anyone else notice how fast time flew by this summer? I mean, I took my daughter shopping for school supplies
