One of the largest and most beautiful moths in the world, the Comet Moth or Madagascan Moon Moth (Argema mittrei), is named after its long red 'comet' tails. The male has a tailspan of 15 to 20 cm. The comet moths are yellow with huge red eyespots and a wingspan of over 20 cm. The female is paler in color and has shorter 8 to 10 cm long wider and more ribbon-like tails. Because of the narrow range of habitats in which they are able to survive, along with rapid deforestation in Madagascar, they are an endangered species. The lifespan of this large silkmoth is only about 5 to 10 days and throughout the whole of this period they do not eat anything. The male tends to live a few days less than the female. Indeed, the comet moth does not even have a mouth, so has to depend on its reserves of fat stored up when it was a caterpillar. During adulthood, of course they must avoid predators, mate, and lay eggs to ensure that there will be a next generation of comet moth. This picture was taken in the tropical butterfly house of the botanical gardens of the Utrecht University in the Netherlands.
